don't care if you hate it or love it, you will talk about the Drake in a decade; you will remember it in your drool-and-forget era. Like no other bar, the Drake elicits visceral responses from Torontonians. Though the weekend crowd has grown increasingly 905-heavy, weeknight clientele and diners still tend toward the Stober-era quasi-locals. With one of the best roof-top patios in the city, and an underground space that houses avant/indie nights and acts, the Drake is versatile, imposing, and influential.

I've visited The Drake several times now, usually in the P.M at the downstairs bar, or the SkyLounge. This week however my friend and I wanted to enjoy the beautiful Toronto afternoon with a bottle of wine on a sunny patio. The Drake seemed like the perfect spot, we chose a little table in the sun and although it was on an extreme angle we were happy to be sitting.
The service started out just fine, the server came over with a wine list and made a recommendation for a bottle of pinot noir, we weren't interested in spending $60 for the bottle so we thanked him and chose a bottle of Barbarelle in the $45 range. 25 minutes later the bottle arrived, only it wasn't what we had ordered. I mentioned this to the server who informed me they didn't have what I wanted but this was the closest thing. I accepted that answer as truth and he opened the wine. It was a nice bottle, only thing is when the bill came 15 minutes after we asked for it, we had been charged $55 for the wine. The fact that we were not notified about the price difference was incredibly tacky. The Drake may get away with mediocre service and food, because of its prime location but I know now that I will never choose to spend my money there again.

This review is based on more than one visit and second and third chances have been used up. Though nicely renovated, The Drake is probably the most pretentious, wannabe artsy lounge in the thriving "Liberty Village" area. Service can be great IF you are European. Otherwise expect to be served last and go to the downstairs washroom while other "white" patrons are favoured. That is a critique of most of its staff (not all) although previous experiences would suggest otherwise. On the up side, the atmosphere is contemporary and chic and thankfully not all their patrons are like their staff.

OMG!, I had such a great time on April 12th at the Drake, my friend meet the promoter of the Drake at some other party called the Bunny Hop a few weeks ago. We booked some dinner through him and stayed for GDP. Hip hop and lots of dance stuff- it was a great dance party and everyone was having a great time- would go the patio and have a smoke and come down- all the staff were very friendly- and I had one of the best times in Toronto and by far the best time on a Thursday- I wanted to spread the word because I can't imagine how crazy its going to get when the weather gets better-
