The trio has created a whirlwind of Asian Art Deco. Curved designer chairs - the Quiet American, Tear Drop, and James chair - line one side and are well matched by low cocktail tables. The walls are adorned with an inordinate number of period posters from Saigon as well as an astounding 130-year old copper sign from China.
The mid-section peninsula bar, crafted from dark Jatoba wood, divides the long, dark, and narrow space into two zones: the front seating area dotted with large day beds imported from Saigon resembles a 30s MGM movie set; the back is a moody, dark-lit, exiled royalty juxtaposition of tatami/washitsu, settees and satin pillows, Chinese lanterns, and a fireplace.
'People walk in here and the want to own it,' says Fletcher. 'They want this to be their place to bring friends and clients.' McVittie agrees, stating, 'Everyone that walks through these doors wants to throw an event here.'
The Comrade isn't a restaurant. With no kitchen, the place is limited to serving cheese plates, desserts and light sandwich fare. Still, due to a fine drink line-up, Comrade is a great starting point before moving to other late-night spots like Soma or the upcoming Booze Emporium. -D.E.

11 Reader Reviews | I love Comrade. It's a great place to have a drink with friends - and I have on at least six occasions in the past year. The service, usually by the owners, is so attentive and always pleasant. I think their snack plates, although minimal, are great for portion, quality and price.

The Comrade is my favourite cheap vacation spot. I feel like I have left the city while sipping my Fruli, mmmm strawberry bubbles. Don't go there if you are expecting dinner, but you can get a delicious plate of cheeses and so on.

I have rarely liked a bar/lounge so much. The room was instantly welcoming; there is something warm and balanced about it, tons of room, beautiful furniture but comfortable too. I loved the artisanal cheeses and figs etc., and the wine was great.
This is my favourite place in Toronto to meet friends. And yes, I bought table lamps. If their furniture store is still open, take a look. It's very odd to go to a bar, and buy lamps, but that's what I did.

This past friday, several friends and I embarked on a 'Leslieville' bar hop - intending on hitting 4 or 5 establishments. Our second stop was The Comrade, and we didnt' want to leave!
The design detail and ambience here are great - the imported loungers, dark wood, deco and asian touches makes you want to lay claim to it as 'your bar'.
Our server (who I believe is one of the owners) treated us very well, keeping our cocktails full. I had something called 'La Parisienne' and it was very tasty (and potent).
I'd recommend this place to anyone who takes their cocktailing seriously!

Nice lounge atmosphere but smelled like a bathhouse. Waitress had zero personality and tried to convince us that organic milk clots in coffee - not likely. Menu was unappealing.
