ntering an enigmatic bar, the expense-account lounger takes a seat in a designer leather chair. He won't drink at King West anymore, that's sooo five minutes ago. He surveys the astonishing layout before him: a dark-hued Art Deco scene that channels a bygone era. 'How much did this cost?' he queries, betraying a tinge of envy. 'Half a million? Million?'
We're sitting in The Comrade, Leslieville's sweet little darling, and Expense Account is right about one thing: it really does feel like a million-dollar layout. The design of the distinctively striking, long, narrow room conjures 1930s Orient Express meets Tom Ford. Think original brick and beam, antique settees, and curve-y designer chairs.
At the Riverside/Leslieville divide, the Comrade is the latest neoteric bar to capitalize on the area's exploding scene. Formerly an ignorable thoroughfare, this strip of Queen East has quickly become a happening unto itself. It's about time that a red star combated the neighbourhood's rampant capitalism.
Comrade owners Nikki Andriet and Dean Fletcher run Leigh+James Furniture. The store draws myriad restaurant designers, all looking for mammoth quantities of distinct chairs, tables and ottomans. Eventually, this spurred the duo's interest in creating a distinct, slick bar space.

I have rarely liked a bar/lounge so much. The room was instantly welcoming; there is something warm and balanced about it, tons of room, beautiful furniture but comfortable too. I loved the artisanal cheeses and figs etc., and the wine was great.
This is my favourite place in Toronto to meet friends. And yes, I bought table lamps. If their furniture store is still open, take a look. It's very odd to go to a bar, and buy lamps, but that's what I did.

This past friday, several friends and I embarked on a 'Leslieville' bar hop - intending on hitting 4 or 5 establishments. Our second stop was The Comrade, and we didnt' want to leave!
The design detail and ambience here are great - the imported loungers, dark wood, deco and asian touches makes you want to lay claim to it as 'your bar'.
Our server (who I believe is one of the owners) treated us very well, keeping our cocktails full. I had something called 'La Parisienne' and it was very tasty (and potent).
I'd recommend this place to anyone who takes their cocktailing seriously!

Nice lounge atmosphere but smelled like a bathhouse. Waitress had zero personality and tried to convince us that organic milk clots in coffee - not likely. Menu was unappealing.
