As Kensington market continues to become a refuge for those seeking an alternative party experience, more and more venues are cropping up to tap into that very experience. The trick though, is in finding out where they are; a party is often happening in the most unexpected place. No obvious doormen leading you into coat check or fail-safe guest lists.
Many of these parties are bringing the crowds to The Boat: a Portuguese restaurant-turned Chucks-and-nods hot (literally, especially in the drip-warm summer)-spot. The Boat draws crowds for disparate parties and dust-vinyl nights. Local acts spin, strum, meld, and wear skinny ties.
For a space that’s on an upper level, it's oddly subterranean in nature. Designed to mimic the lower deck of a ship, its electric-eclectic flavour hit us right away. Sharp strobe lights and gigantic port holes as windows started to bring on that woozy feeling, as did the moderately priced drinks. The decor is decidedly kitschy; a nostalgic vibe with a new sense of irony, as the look remains unchanged from its earlier incarnation. The music being played is often cutting edge, not the sort of beats that one might find in your regular run-of-the-mill dance club. The night that we were there was an all out dance party hosted by DJs Alex, Vanessa F. and Colin B.
You never know what to expect at The Boat. Somewhat dodgy and hidden, it isn’t that predictable. The place is as clandestine as the parties that it hosts. There’s something to be said about taking over a venue that wasn’t originally intended for live bands or dance parties and turning it into the place to be, even if it is for just a night. Granted, you can go to a sure thing bar/club and know what to expect, but sometimes it’s these make-shift parties that end up being the memorable ones. The trick is to know about them, as they’re usually promoted through word of mouth. Or, just take a walk through Kensington Market and follow the music.
Take some Gravol, cuff your jeans, and tilt your head back, moving your hair just enough to see the stairs as you ascend to this faux-ship for the vest crowd. -F.S.

4 Reader Reviews | Thought this place was the best club i have ever gone to. We have nothing like this in Ireland.I was there in Feb 08 visiting friends and couldn't recommend the place high enough after my experience.Looking at the other comments I think i was there on a goinsteady night. The highlight being "shout" - The place was absolutely hopping like a greek wedding! I liked it so much I am now in the process of emigrating to Toronto.. Yeehaw can't wait to go back.

This place is awesome ! Such a difference from the other clubs in Toronto. I've been going ever since summer of 2005. My favourite night is called Goin' Steady. (www.myspace.com/goinsteady) it is always a scream! The DJs play old music, like girl groups, and surf and rockabilly and it is always a great dance floor ! only $5 to get in is a bargain too. there is very little attitude at the boat, esp. at goin' steady, everyone is just there to have a good time !

i love it when it's packed and when the dance floor is filled with sweaty bodies, and this is exactly what i found on a friday night, with the dj spinning retro, electronic, indie, a little bit of hip hop and rock music.
on this particular night, the crowd definately had character; some where dressed up in costumes such as the crazy Einstein and monster while others were in retro clothing style, or anything vintage.
age range was 20-30; good balance of beautiful girls and handsome guys; by midnight, theres a lineup to get in; if you're thirsty, you can always help yourself to some water :)
i had such an awesome time. i will definately be hittin it up very soon.
