T he Annex Live may be a relative newcomer to the Toronto restaurant scene, but it has the feel of a place that has been there forever. Or at least for a couple of decades. Anyone familiar with Toronto's intellectual (or pseudo-intellectual, as the case may be) "culture of ideas" or with the Annex neighbourhood will fondly remember Dooney's Café, a 21-year-old Bloor Street institution populated by writers, professors, and thinkers (Margaret Atwood was a regular). At the risk of sounding hyperbolic (what me? never) when owner Graziano Marchese (himself an Annex institution) sold the café in 2008, it signaled the end of an era. Anyone who felt the blow to the community should be happy to hear that Marchese has resurfaced with the nearby Annex Live.
The 3,000 square foot loft-like venue once housed the Poor Alex Theatre, the more independently-minded cousin to the Theatre District's Royal Alex. The space has since undergone a massive two and a half year renovation, transforming it into a beautiful multi-faceted venue. Part café, part restaurant, part bar, and part live performance venue, The Annex Live is much more ambitious than Dooney's ever was. But it still retains the casually friendliness that has come to be associated with Marchese. Sitting at the long red marble bar, one can nurse a cappuccino or fair trade tea for hours at a time without feeling unwelcome. Many of the customers are still regulars and Graziano knows many of them by name.
Despite the chameleonic venue space, the main focus at The Annex Live is on the food. The chef has put together a menu full of Northern Italian and Mediterranean staples like Steamed Mussels, various Pastas (including a Duck Confit Pappardelle), a few meat dishes like Striploin Steak, Lamb Shank and Pork Back Ribs. There's also a lunch menu filled with sandwiches, salads and a burger, but the hidden gem is the weekend brunch, filled with Omelettes and other standards, but much less crowded than many other Bloor Street haunts. The wine cellar is amply packed with fifty to seventy bottles, about 90% of which are private stock.
Below the raised dining area sits one of the few remaining facets of the Poor Alex, its stage. "We wanted to utilize what we have in terms of the culture of the place and keep a cultural link to the arts," says Marchese. "The Annex Live offers something to the community that you can't get from nearby places like Future Bakery, The Brunswick House, or The Labyrinth." The owner doesn't book "buzz bands" or "hot" acts, but leaves the stage open to a diverse set of comedy performances, musical acts, and jazz groups.
Marchese insists that each aspect of the venue is self-sufficient and that he doesn't want one to support the others. The music, food, and ambiance should each be its own main attraction, not a means to each other. "I hate to sound like a cliché," he continues, "but it isn't just about money, either. At my age, it's more about the passion of it, the need to be recognized positively in the industry. To have someone say, 'hey, great place Grazi', that's the accomplishment."

Quite a disappointment!! We were looking forward to a great night out and seeing a band, we heard of, play. Unfortunately, the band had to clue up before playing a complete third set due to not being paid as previously agreed upon by the Annex Live(from what I've heard they did get paid days later but only received about half of what was originally agreed upon). Although the server was pleasant, although incredibly slow- even though the place wasn't that busy- I can't see me or anyone I know giving business to a place as dishonest as this the Annex is noted to be.
A good band is a great asset when choosing where to go for a bite to eat and a few drinks or a night on the town. I think it would do The Annex Live well to respect local musicians more.

I also thought Karen's comment was slightly odd. Expensive? Perhaps she got her geoIP screwed up. Annex is wickedly innexpensive.

'Karen' deserves a reality check. The prices at the Annex are pretty reasonable, especially after you consider that you're paying 1.5 times the price for the same caliber of food on Harbord. And harshing on a restaurant because it isn't busy on a given night? I don't understand why that belongs in a review. Personally, I liked the food and the service. My server wasn't pushy, and was very attentive to whatever I needed. I enjoyed my dinner, the wine selection, and especially my desert, a flourless chocolate torte. I'll be back!

Wednesday nights are my new nights to check out some cool bands at this venue.. I've discovered a band that's been around the Toronto scene for a while, but until last week I'd never heard of them. They're called The Dirt Farmers and I think they'll be there every week, or every other week.. Remind me a bit of Cracker from the Kerosene Hat days.
Good beer on tap too... Mill Street, and I'm good to go.

I was at Annex Live on Saturday night and saw a great band, The Wicked Grin! They were awesome! I loved the atmosphere and had the best Cornish Hen I've ever had!! The risotto was to die for!! I can't wait to go back there! I think the singer of the band said they were planning on doing a monthly gig there - I hope so, they did a few Tom Waits songs that rocked! I definitely recommend Annex Live for a great night out!!

I love The Annex Live! There's always a guarantee for great conversation with staff and/or other guests and I love the food! I go for brunch every weekend with my family and really enjoy the live music, especially Thursday nights.... Also, the courtyard patio is lovely.

This place is dead. No problem getting a table as there are plenty empty ones to go around and its apparent why. The food was well below par for such high prices. Tough steak and bland pasta headline the menu. It's apparent that very little thought was put into the development of this place. Service was passable at best without and type of table maintenance and no salesmanship I'm surprised it's lasted this long. There are plenty of other places to eat in the area and for my dollar it won't be here. The washrooms haven't been cleaned in days. Looks like this place won't last very long.

The Annex live is slightly generic... but you have to admit, it's fun - a cozy loft-like space.

Meh... very generic, Food was not the greatest... service was decent.
I probably wouldn't go back...

This place is small and neighbourhoody, I like that. It seemed like there were a few regulars, which is always a good sign. I've been here a few times and always left satisfied. The food and drink is always top notch, and that is really all that matters to me.

These guys are the GREATEST!!! Quite possibly the best post-drinking hang in the area. With all the choices, and relatively cool people, you really can't go wrong!

We went to check it out for coffee on Monday. The treats are smaller but still good. The coffee was great. Service is great and it really is a nice little cafe. We will definitely go back.

Great restaurant, Good Character, Good Food, Good Prices. I would recommend coming in a small group, otherwise your wait will be a lot longer.

Good luck Graziano from your past neighbour of the 90's,
This is Johnathan Vrozos the owner of the Brunswick House and Albert's Hall (BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, etc) from 1989 till 2001.
It's good to see that someone has revived Joe's old Poor Alex theater.
Great venue I'm sure!!!
Did you get a patio licence from Olivia Chow?

Although it looks great on the inside I felt very cramped and crowded at my table. Nothing like trying to pack them in even though the place was pretty empty when I went there. The food was good...nothing spectacular for sure. The service was fair and our server was just that...a server. No care for if we enjoyed the meal, and basically took our order, brought our food and gave us the bill. We had Pasta and a steak. Very bland and the plate had about 2 oz of oil at the bottom of it. A little pricey for what we ordered. Would I go there again....only if there were line ups at the other restaurants in the neighborhood.

Yeah, the fare is pretty delicious and the drinkage is good too. A little heavy, a little greasy, but really an excellent choice for the Annex area.

Sad to say this place needs some identity. Is it a restaurant or sports bar? The food was very average at best. And when the staff weren't watching TV they were eating at the bar. It's to bad as I know what was spent and how much time was taken to get this place together.
The Annex Live misses the mark by a long shot.

Already been. The guys there were very, very nice. Best service I've received since coming to the Annex area.
Sandwich was awesome. I hate mayonnaise and forgot to ask them to take it off, but somehow it actually tasted okay.
Cheers!
