Sweet, somewhat romantic, and not outrageously expensive, Kensington Kitchen (KK) was always a little hidden gem. With KK now gone (R.I.P.), the rickety space on Harbord Street now houses yet another semi-secret jewel. Retaining all of KK's attributes, Tati Bistro is more of an update than an overhaul.

Tati is a French bistro of the highest order, with a healthy wine list, a charming owner, a skilled and attentive chef, and an uncommon and impressive sensibility. As sad as it was to see KK disappear from the scene, co-owner and Chef, Laurent Brion (Executive Chef at Teatro from 2001 - 2005) has managed to whip the familiar space back into good health while creating a signature menu to showcase his take on classic French bistro fare.

In a world where A-list chefs comfortably play with their pet themes of signature plates, doling out an endless parade of culinary artistry, it's impressive to see the understated simplicity that Brion works with. It's worth noting that Brion, who hails from France, was last making headlines with his own gastronomic tendencies at the ill-fated 8 Restolounge. While the 8 space has now resurfaced as Jacobs & Co, a high-end steakhouse, Brion has brought his Tati to life to feature French classics.

He gets down to business with a small but effective menu. The starters are traditional French fare, the best of the lot being the escargot ($8) doused in roast garlic butter and ringed by a wild mushroom fricassee. The Beef Carpaccio ($14), plated with arugula and parmesan, tasted much better than it looked (a shade too brown). The Jumbo Shrimp had great flavour, but ultimately drowned in its accompanying garlic butter. For mains, the Filet Mignon (the most expensive item on the menu at $32) was accompanied by a zesty béarnaise sauce, a generous pile of frites (as we had requested), and a side of grilled vegetables (the kitchen's favourite finishing touch). Teatro diners will remember that Brion likes to add vegetables to anything and everything: not just a mere garnish, but a generous mix of green beans with roasted garlic, grilled zucchini, and crisp (yet cooked) carrots. The New York Steak was a better beef bet: a fork-tender piece of meat nicely complemented by a maitre d'hotel butter and a generous serving of supremely crisp frites. Looking regal as it nested with a rather tasteless flash-fried shallot sauce, the herb-roasted chicken, especially the juicy white-meat portion, was downright succulent. Its side of tasty oven-dried tomatoes was a welcome treat. The braised lamb shank tasted curiously bland, although it was certainly a good cut, surrounded by a medley of roasted vegetables. Across the menu, portions are ample, especially in view of the pricing. Many entrées were under $20. Even the rack of lamb was reasonable at $28.00.

The look of the bistro is still very KK-ish, which means, for lack of a better word, cute. The burgundy façade and crisp, old-fashioned vibe creates a refreshing and clean atmosphere for dining in romance and comfort. You need both elements to really bring the dining experience up a notch, and that’s exactly what Brion did with the Kensington Kitchen carcass. Tati is definitely a spot to keep an eye on; it's an ambitious endeavor that has the potential to evolve into a fully realized restaurant. -D.E.

Kind of a lot of bad reviews for a place that's quite good. I don't get it. We've been to Tati about four times this year, and each trip was very good.

The antipasto platter came and when we asked the food runner to explain what was on it, she didn't even know! She sent the waitress over who told us that the soppressata was capicola. The mussels were bad, the calamari rubbery, the cold cuts were store bought. As a main we shared the duck confit. The leg was nice and crispy but dry. I agree with everyone else, wth so many good resto's in Toronto, do not bother with this one.

We went to Tati as a treat for my daughter's 16th birthday and it was fantastic. I am an Executive Chef and have been in the biz for 30+ years. This was the best service ever experienced. Food was excellent. Thanks for a great day for my daughter.

Impeccable food, disastrous service. The servers are an embarrassment to the clearly talented chef. I'm surprised management hasn't woken up and hired decent servers to serve their tasteful French fare. All 4 people at my party agreed we had only praise for the food, but wouldn't recommend the restaurant due to the service (or lack thereof).

Sorry lynn but thats not the way it works in the restaurant business, it is not your aunt's house, it's a business come back in 20minutes.

My boyfriend and I went into Tati last night for a drink and some terrine. We sat at the bar and both ordered cocktails. When the bartender was done mixing mine I noticed she put a lot of ice in the glass, despite having mixed the drink with ice. Weird. She then walked behind the bar with the mixer and when she assumed we could not see her (she assumed wrong) drank the remaining mix out of the shaker. Pretty gross. We certainly won't be going back, especially since the terrine was nothing special.

We tried going to Tati this evening. No one was there dining yet and when we walked in we were ignored for several minutes even though the hostess saw us. She walked up to us and arrogantly told us it didn't open for another 20 minutes. If it'd been my restaurant and first-time customers, I would've invited them in (the door was unlocked, after all), seated them, and at least brought them drinks and bread or something until the kitchen was ready. Instead she didn't offer a smile or anything welcoming, was rude, and locked the door behind us when we left. Lost our business for good. We ended up having a very nice meal with great service at Loire down the street instead.

The service may have left a little to be desired, they were pleasant enough. The food was lovely - fairly extensive wine list too. I highly recommend the escargot appetizer, the steak tartare and the duck confit was actually well seasoned instead of being overly salty.

How to rate this restaurant? Having gone about eight times, I have had only one bad dish there--a pappardelle that was gluey. However the noise level was beyond tolerable and I won't go back. If you go out to eat good food while engaged with your dinner partner/s in stimulating conversation, avoid Tati's. You won't be able to hear a word anyone says. Where I come from (the States), this level of noise is indicated on restaurant reviews by an exploding bomb icon. Apropos to the max in this case.

I had beyond doubt the most horrible experience this past saturday nite. had made reservation 2 weeks in advanced, were called back by the restaurant and had the reso confirmed. Once there, we were told there was no reservation under our name. The hostess was rude and had absolutely no idea how to handle the situation. A gentleman who may have been a manager or owner was also sarcastic and didnt care. we were told we can go sit upstairs which looks like a attic, and when when said we wanted to sit downtairs, the hostess said well u should specify which floor u want to sit when u call us, and when we told her we had no idea there were two floors, she shook her head. i dine out all the time and so do my friends, and I can assure tatti they will never see any of us in their restaurant.

At first I was skeptical..I read the reviews and at first was hesitant to give Tati a try. Tati came highly recommended by friends. I am glad that I did because I have now found a new fabulous place! Love the atmosphere, warm and inviting. The staff was amazing, attentive and super friendly! The escargot appetizers is delish...I can't remember the last time I had anything so tasty! The steak was divine, wonderfully cooked and mouthwatering. The food is so reasonably priced. I recommend that you give this place a try and don't live by the reviews. This place is a wonderful gem. I am looking forward to a return visit soon.

Yes, the food was rather good but not 'amazing'. The atmosphere was rather pleasant too. The lack of adequate seating was annoying BUT the intensely RUDE belligerent wait staff was and remains UNFORGIVABLE.
I do not pay extravegant prices so I can dine out and be abused, neglected and given a very rude attitude from a hostile waitress.
I therefore shall never return and shall tell everyone I meet who asks me of a good place to dine in Toronto NOT to waste their money at Tati Bistro.
The rude staff destroyed our dining experience.

The food was generally very good (with one exception), but the service was truly the rudest we have ever experienced (and we mean startlingly, blow you away rude). Unfortunately, this is the second time we've been to this restaurant and our server was rude last time as well. We encourage anyone who might go to this restaurant to check their bill carefully. Ours came to $225, but when the server ran it through Visa, she put it in as $255, and then became indifferent and dismissive when we brought the error to her attention. And finally, they allow cigarette and cigar smoking on their patio, which is pretty gross.

The service is appalling -- they seem to have staffed the place with huffy girls who don't know much about French food and drink. The couple next to us (seated in the middle of the room) got up and left after waiting ages to place an order, and for the whole night, waitstaff pushed through the six inches between our table and the next one -- I never need to see anyone's tattooed lower back that close to my dinner plate. Skip this place and try La Palette or Paradis if you're looking for a good French bistro.

When I made our reservation I was apologetically informed that we'd be seated in the upstairs dining room. Maybe that should have been my tip off. Having never been to Tati before, I thought that would be OK. In fact, we were relegated to the forgotten hinterland of the upstairs dining room...never to be heard from again.

Appetizers came quickly and were alright, I had the green salad and my wife had the beef carpaccio. However, after apps were done, we were forgotten about. The waitstaff disappeared, and that was the last we saw of anyone for an hour. When we sought out the waitress and told her that we had to leave soon, she mumbled something inaudible about the kitchen and shuffled off. Overall, the service staff is amateurish and uncaring.

For mains, I had the black cod which was relatively tasteless and waaay overcooked. My wife had the bouillabaise which contained rubbery calamari, overcooked and rubbery Tilapia (so overdone that it couldn't be cut - just one rubbery chunk of fish), unimpressive mussles and one clam. Oh, one spoonful of the broth revealed a broken shards of clamshell which my wife chewed on.

Overall, very disappointing. I would not recommend dining at Tati and wonder if they should rename themselves Kaki.

First off, staff greeting was genuine. Felt like I'd been a client for years. It's under a year old and was my first time.
My waiter, seemed to be the only guy there, light-footed forsure but very professional albeit a little entertaining, which I appreciate and enjoy.
The meal. Steak frittes. Thank GOD tastebuds can't ejaculate cuz my mouth would'a bin FULL!!!
They were so good, I was tempted eat the plate nm lick it!
I'll be back for more of the same!

Oh, I was a little wary about hanging my coat but, thankfully, not so much as a spark...;-)

my jacket caught fire (and was destroyed) on a candle which was placed below a coat hook beside our table. it took 45 minutes for one of the owners to come over and acknowledge the incident - when he finally did approach the table, after introducing himself he suggested we "do a test" - i guess a test to see if anyone else put their jacket on the hook would the candle below burn it? (like i purposefully wanted to lay my expensive jacket on top of a burning candle??) He was absolutely shockingly rude, not once did he utter an apology for the loss of my jacket. they decided to compensate me by comping our water (which we did not ask for) and for my $35 meal. wow... disgusting.

I have been here a few times, and the crammed seating had always been compensated by the great food and service. Last time I had gone was probably the the last time I will ever go - a staff member had been very rude by stating, after we paid the bill, that we "made people wait for their table for 45 minutes," as a result of the length of our seating. Really unnecessary, considering patrons should never be held responsible for that and should never hear it.

The service was great and the food superb. It's been a long time since I had a dinner which I could rave over. We shared the wild mushroom starter and it had an incredible sauce and was so delicious and filling I thought I'd never be able to eat my entree but I had the black cod on a pile of mashed potatoes and I ate absolutely everything except the skin. Again, a touch of exquisite sauce and some interesting veggies, cooked to perfection. My companion had the steak and frites and declared it perfect - done exactly as he had requested it. We were very impressed with everything. This is now my favourite restaurant.
