  • Tappo Wine Bar and Restaurant

    Review by Ellen Jakobsmeier
Thanks to the Distillery District, Toronto now has a Gothic-esque wine bar restaurant available to those needing an element of the sublime in their life (when Poe just won’t do anymore). The transcendent interior creates a spooky setting with an exposed ceiling and original brick walls that are illuminated by elegant chandeliers.

Ebony black chairs, white table cloths and a mirrored bar that runs the length of the room complete the effect that combines modern design with the historical architecture of the building. This is a wine bar, so make a date with the sommelier to get the inside scoop about the secrets in the cellar. If you have somehow arrived here but can’t down a glass of vino without suffering a pained expression of disdain for the bevy, there is an assortment of spectacular beers up for offer.

What a waste of an evening. I went out for a night on the town with my girlfriends and ended up in this restaurant. No one gave us the time of day - the service was lousy, and the owner was apparently sitting at the bar the whole time. No one came to greet us and talk to us. We felt like lepers, because that's how we were treated. To think, that this restaurant was recommended by another colleague. What a disappointment. Tappo needs to wake up and smell the vino. We will give our hard earned dollars to other establishments in the future. Very disappointed.

Overall, just terrible. Not only were the prices ridiculus but one of the employees (at the very least, he was the maitre'd) sat two men who he seemed to know at the bar and then all evening proceeded to share stories very loudly with a lot of profanity and derogatory comments. Our server was inattentive. The decor was cheap-looking, the music was too loud and all top 40 pop.

I will never, ever return and will warn others against dining here.

Very poor service. I made a reservation over the internet. They failed to confirm it. When I called to confirm, they were rude to me over the phone and got mad at me because they didn't get my reservation and then scoffed when I asked for a table for 4 at 7 PM pursuant to my internet confirmation. He said "well we didn't get your reservation and you should have confirmed". I said "that is what I am doing". I hope they are nicer to visitors to Toronto because that is a poor representation of our wonderful city.

The food was delicious but the service was not as high class as the decor and the prices would suggest. The restaurant was half empty one day after Valentine's day and we were not allowed to sit at a table for 4 (we were 2) that seemed far from the door, thus maybe warmer. The place was awfully cold, and everyone was wearing their coat on their shoulders. There was not much decorum with the service, worthy of a Mario's, with no real connections to the customers. I was served a rack of lamb cooked with a roast of salt, but was not told so, so I bit into it, and I had to spit it out. I thought that error on their part could have been worthy of a free glass of wine! My husband's chicken was excellent except that it was too salty. The tiramisu was divine. I would not go back there, especially in the winter, as they did not make us feel comfortable. Seemingly because they don't know how.

I have never had such appalling service...anywhere. To begin the evening we were scoffed at when we asked for a table for 4 without a reservation. To end the evening, we were showered (and not lightly showered) with water that smelled like sewage when a toilet broke in an office above the restaurant. But wait, it gets better...none of the staff thought being doused with fecal matter was note-worthy and even tried to insist that we pay the entire $250 bill!
