GOOD NIGHTCLUB doesn't always need a gimmick to make it a happening spot. Sometimes a booming sound system, party tunes that won't quit and cocktails with a kick are more than enough. The bottom line is, Are you having a great time? You might at Tangerine on King Street West.
Toronto club and concert promoters Hot Stepper Productions (Pedro, Joseph and Carlos Mondesir) are the new operators and partners of Tangerine Bar & Lounge, to try to bring new life to this double-height lounge location. The clean-washed, minimalist space, with low banquettes and throw pillows provides a warm and mellow refuge. Professional nightlifers are already flocking for the DJ-quality music and peacefully ambient vibe.
The low, backless ottomans for seating are for short-term occupancy only. Be wise, and grab a wonderfully comfortable banquette. Or better yet, blend with the crowd that so far seems to be fashion types and gallery goers, fitting the bar's chosen title and demographic. The clientele--young professionals and clean-cut Eurasians--can find the best aspects of all these spots under one roof.
Tangerine is clearly aimed for the more provincial crowd gazers--downtown model wannabes, Europhiles and in-the-know Torontonians on the prowl for new energy. Musically, the roster ranges from deep house to hip-hop to loungy soul, with occasional live acts. The music meets the visuals with DJ blends drifting from strategically placed speakers, so that the sound resonates, rather than drowning out conversation.
