    LT Cafeiving in Toronto, you develop a thick skin when it comes to beloved institutions. It seems like just yesterday when a trip to Toronto would involve a Jays game at the Skydome (not the Rogers Centre), some music shopping at Sam The Record Man, and maybe a bite at Boba (all places that have since changed or disappeared). If you were part of the so-called intellectual elite, you would avoid all of this and opt instead for a bottomless cup of coffee and some enlightened conversation at Dooney's Café, a veritable Bloor Street institution. The cozy 21-year-old café was remarkable for its ability to survive despite the mature (read: old) clientele in an increasingly young and trendy Annex neighbourhood.

    When owner Graziano Marchese finally sold the café in 2008 and moved full time to his new restaurant/jazz bar, The Annex Live, it signaled the end of an era. New owner Marnie Goldlust kept the name for a while, but a new menu, focus, and deliberate attempt to pander to a younger clientele, many saw this as heresy. Wisely, she eventually closed up shop and reopened a month later with a brand new name, gimmick, and menu. Now called the T Café, the shop is a shrine to all things tea (although, should not be confused with the nearby All Things Tea). The sidewalk may still bear a scribbled "Save Dooney's", but the old café is but a memory.

    Where Dooney's was impressively staunch in its traditionalism and refusal to change with the fads, the people behind T Café see themselves as part of a changing Toronto landscape. "We want to be at the forefront of the tea revolution," declares Daniel the manager, although he doesn't consider it a novel concept. "Tea is embedded in tradition. In other areas of the world like India and the UK, it's actually more popular than coffee, but it's only now catching on in North America. Starbucks is closing all over the place. Coffee has plateaued." Well, that's not necessarily the case, but there is a lot of room for the new tea niche.

    T Café treats the tea leaf with the respect it deserves. Those reared on Orange Pekoe and English Breakfast will be flabbergasted by the sheer breadth of options. Over 50 loose-leaf teas are available from all five major tea regions: Japan, China, India, Sri Lanka, and Taiwan (pay attention; there'll be a test later). Every day, three teas are featured as "teas of the day". Where a coffee is usually single-serving, teas at T Café come in individual teapots that provide a couple of cups per pot. They'll even be happy to provide you with extra hot water for the leftover tea leaves (although you didn't hear that from me). The loose-leaf teas are all available iced, or in 50 and 100 gram tins to take home.

    But they don't stop there. There's also a full tapas-style menu (that's one Toronto trend they've missed by a mile), with tea infused into almost every dish. Selections like Fried Onions with Green Tea Batter, BBQ Back Ribs with Black Tea Sauce, and Rice Paper Green Tea Gravlax may seam a bit odd, but they're all meant to fully showcase the leaf in all its glory. Dishes are all under ten dollars, and there are two tasting options ($22.50 and $30) if you want to try a bit of everything.

    this place is to expensive. for the lack of work required to put leaves into a pot, i should be able to get something for a reasonable price. not the case. don't waste your time at this place, go across the street where the staff are nicer and the store isn't snob-filled. tea is tea, but apparently if you're at T you're 'superior'... barf...

    I used to go to Dooney's before the conversion, but am so glad that T Cafe was its replacement. My wife and I started going to T sporadically, but now go at least once a week. We're both tea addicts, and we've been impressed with the way they incorporate it into their menu. We just tried their new desserts as well and freaked out. Awesome brunch, very friendly staff and a very affordable, tasty menu in a bright, clean environment. Very smart off free wifi and dot A/C outlets all over the restaurant, too.

    i like this place. I think all the naysayers below missed the point. It is a cafe with delicious beverages that are complimented by a nice, healthy menu. The place does not presume to be a top tapas bar or anything like that. The food is a great alternative the the crap that is offered at, say, the Bucks. Kudos to T.

    p.s. the tea really was great!

    Hmmm... I wonder what kinda people actually waste their time making food comments on the internet anyhow. Too much time picking your nose I guess.

    Not sure about Lilly's comment but she is allowed her opinion. I'll say I've tried almost every item on the menu and agree that the sauces are the "bomb". I love the samosas and know that they bake them and don't use the fryer to cook them. The sweet potato chips came out crispy and full of flavor. Had the buffalo chicken wrap and it was amazing with this lime peppercorn sauce. Keep up the good work but I guess keep an eye on under cooked stuff in Lilly's case.

    I wanted to like T Cafe. I've actually ordered a few different items on different occasions just because the menu descriptions seem so fantastic that they make my mouth water. My conclusion is that the food is bad yet the sauces are really good. If I could bring in my own food and use their sauce, I'd be happy. I just ate a beautiful strawberry sauce that was sadly wasted on pancake thin, soggy samosas. It reminded me of the refreshing and zesty rainforest something dip that went with the sad flaps of mush that had been called sweet potato chips.

    Maybe they just have to learn how to properly use a deep fryer.

    I used to like this place when it first opened, the tea is alright but then i had the unfortunate opportunity to overhear one of the cooks; extremely rude who made a backhanded comment about gay persons to a customer standing talking to him.
    I'm not going back and will be sure to tell others, and i liked the place, so imagine what he said.

    Dirty tables, rude service,just plain bad food...
    Maybe before the recession this was cool. Now, it's just pathetic. But I think it's due to the idea of the "cheapness" of the ownership more than the reality of providing a good service of some sort. Don't say you haven't been given a serious heads up. Happy eating.

    I thought the staff was lovely and the food I had was delicious. I found the atmosphere a little too sterile. Too much white! But I did feel comfortable sitting there all afternoon reading, working, etc. The staff working checked on me periodically. They were laid-back but really friendly. So I don't really have any complaints.

    Todd, I have indeed been to both - I live around the corner. You are clearly the owner - I have never met anyone who has enjoyed their visit to T Cafe. And all you have to do is have the staff show some professionalism. That's all. Too much to ask?

    11. Julie Lewis's Review :: May 20, 2009
    Julie Lewis's Rating: 1 Stars
    Julie apparently you have not been in this place nor had you visited Dooney's. When it was Dooney's the service was the worst with staff sitting around and reading comics, or smoking in the back. You will see that the place is full of students using the free wifi almost at any given time. Of course there are times when every restaurant is slow but that's the norm in that business. Just wondering when you became the judge of start up businesses in the city. I love the fact that the "haters" out there automatically assume that any good reviews are employees or the owner. Even if some of them were the work of the employees it just shows their pride in the place. It's unfortunate that there are people that want to see this or any business fail.

    12. Toni 's Review :: May 20, 2009
    Toni 's Rating: Stars
    The positive reviews are suspect as another review claimed they were written by employees to hype this restaurant. This place is not packed for a reason, and that is that it is one of the worst start-ups in the city. Food is un-edible. Staff are oddly unprofessional. It was sooo good as Dooney's.

    Skip it -- this place doesnt know if its coming or going. After ordering my lunch, I sat down to do work....My drink and one of my food orders was served to me by the staff, so I just assumed the rest of my order would be served to me. But I was suprised 10mins later to hear "ribs" "ribs" being yelled out in the restaurant...it took me a moment to realize that was my order and I was suppose to get up and get my order??? I dont think T cafe knows what they are...take my word and skip it....any place that has to put up false positive reviews (Read the first couple) is desperate for a reason.

    Even though the place was empty on a monday morning, the staff who were doing nothing, but chatting stood beside my food yelled for me to come and get it....I was sitting across the restaurant w my ear phones in, apparently the "busy" staff couldnt be bothered to bring it to me.

    PASS UP THIS PLACE....for the prices they charge, you think that they would serve

    Several months ago when this place was Dooneys I had a horrible experience w their servers, I thought I would try again. It was a waste of time. I have lived in the Annex for most of my life and have seen many restaurants come and go. I look forward to this one going.

    This place could be really cool. However, it is a little lackluster at the moment. Food is good, tea pot is a good deal, staff are hip. I agree that the owners don't really know what the neighborhood is like. they should catch the vibe and get some art in the shop and get rid of those tacky green scarfs. All and all - a good place to chill.

    I'm from out of town and don't really know anything about the area, but I stopped to eat at T cafe a couple weeks ago. I had a basic Oolong tea, arguably the best ribs ever, and finished with a chocolate chip muffin top. I found the entire meal very satisfying.

    I was impressed with the uniqueness and variety of the foods and teas, most of which I had no idea existed, and also enjoyed the laid back ambiance and the modern look of the cafe. The staff was great and the prices were reasonable. Cozy enough to relax and surf the net, but classy enough for a date.

    These are some of the worst attempts at fake reviews I've ever read. Either that, or the people writing these reviews are the biggest dorks on the planet, because nobody talks in sunshiney lollipop English like that unless they're a Stepford wife or Kenneth from 30 Rock.

    Personally, I welcome this change. It's great to see something new and exciting in Toronto! The decor is fresh, the people are friendly, the atmosphere is chill, and the food is something to crave over! What more could you ask for?? Anyone still gripping onto the thought of Dooney's should keep an open mind and try something new* I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised by what this place has to offer, it's Tea-riffic!

    As a former Annex resident for many years, I figured I must go and check this place out - and wow was I impressed! And I must admit that I am a long time tea lover, but this place just took tea to a whole new universe for me! especially one of their signature drinks, the "True Maple" (or as they call it a t-au-lait) could actually beat any latte I've ever had. and the vegetarian tasting menu was also fantastic (especially love all the tea-infused sauces that accompany each dish). I am dreaming of the strawberry red tea sauce right now...

    anyone know if they cater?

    I visited T Cafe when it first opened a couple weeks ago and found it very pleasing. The Staff were great and really let me know about their tea. I'm not a coffee drinker and consider myself pretty knowledgeable about tea but did learn a few things there. I tried the muffin tops and loved them. I'm looking forward to many more visits.

    My guess is that it's the whack-job owners that are posting those. The entire place has Restaurant-Makeover-gone-wrong all over it. Tea's good, though.

    30. Kate Yarmouth's Review :: April 09, 2009

    I did really enjoy my visit to T Cafe. I had a delicious tea called Monk's blend. Im a big coffee drinker, so im a little hesitant to completely switch teams, but after this, i will surely be drinking more in the future. I didn't try the food but it did look delicious. More reasons to go back!!!

    I guess it's sad that Dooney's is gone. But heck, by the end of its run, it was clear it was time to go. Will be missed by many I'm sure, including myself, but I can't say Im disappointed with this new addition to the Annex.

    This is something this neighborhood needed a long time ago. The food is innovative and extremely tasty. The lamb is by far one of the best I've ever had. Love the fact that loose leaf teas are used in the food as well. The atmosphere is laid back and reserve with the opportunity to actually get work done if you so choose. Free wifi is like icing on the cake. The patio looks great and I look forward to spending my off times there. Way to go and welcome to the neighborhood.

    I visited T Cafe (I live across the street). And admittedly, I was disgruntled about losing my Dooney's (I've been going there since puberty) but, I've lightened up a bit. I read Richard's piece here (a long time martiniboys reader) and re-tried. Not bad. Staff was friendly. Vibe was somewhat cool. Perhaps this could be a great Annex addition. Just give it a try. - it's not all tea.

    It's about time someone opened something new in this hood. I'm tired of the same old, same old. My friends and I all go to U of T and were super stoked to find a place with cheap eats, free wifi and plenty of plugs to charge our laptops... what else does a student want??
