Considering its location (at the core of Yonge&Bloor-eria), its tricky size (a tad larger than a bus shelter), and its oddly low-rent sign hovering over Hayden Street, it’s a wonder that this restaurant works at all; but its high-end Sushi fare and hospitality are truly enticing.
Sushi Sono is as small and cute as any toy from Tokyo. Only a few wood benches and tables fill the tiny space. Simple Japanese prints dot the walls. The open kitchen adds a bit of sparkle. Compared with the plethoric fledging sushi options in the area ( Sushi & BBQ on Yonge and Toko ), this isn't high-concept dining, but little Sono is on par with the finest Japanese eateries in the city.
Sono has a good selection of creative small-plate dishes, sushi and sake; each item hits the table as soon as it's ready. Appetizers like the Agedashi Tofu, Beef Sashimi, and the Yaki Tori (deep fried skewers of chicken and vegetable) look appealing and taste even better. Stick with the sushi specials, and you'll be in for a nice ride.
The menu, which thankfully includes English explanations of the Japanese specials, includes all the raw-bite usual suspects. Among the must-try rolls are the Hamachi (Yellow Tail), Saba (a fatty Mackerel) and the Sake (tender salmon). With fragrant doses of herbs and spices, most items taste absolutely fresh.
Maguro Tuna Rolls are textural wonders, crunchy and yogurt-cool, while the Ikura Salmon Roe and Tai Red Snapper Rolls are tender and fresh. Salmon Teriyaki sizzles, its tangy sauce transforms into crispy bits enhancing strips of sweet onion and pepper. Vegetables are spectacularly rich, including the Tempura Udon (soft oozing noodles with tempura).

10 Reader Reviews | Been working in Toronto for the last 2 weeks and I've eaten here 4 times already. What more can be said? The fish is extremely fresh and the hot spicy veggie soup is amazing. Plus other Asian people eat there so you KNOW it has to be good.
Forgot to say...sometimes it takes awhile to get a table, so go early or make a reservation. The homies will thank you for it.

The only sushi restaurant we go to on a regular basis. The fish is above average and the portions are perfectly sized. Definitely not the best sushi I've had, but Sushi Sono is the perfect combination of good food, consistency, and convenience.

One of the best and most authentic Japanese sushi restaurants in the city. Host is Japanese, sushi chefs are Japanese, servers are Japanese with Japanese accents and polite Japanese mannerisms.

i went with my parents because we happend to know the owners:) and although i am young i have quite the palate for sushi. we ordered the 50 piece set and the waiter was very kind and polite even after i split many things. she offered to fill my miso soup bowl at regular intervals and was very polite. the food was top notch. the sushi was fresh and smooth the maki was spicy and powerful and the unagi was sweet and delicious. the food was very fairly priced and the place, although small had a very strong charm. although seating was limited, we were all able to sit comfortably. i love this restaurant and i would definitely want to eat here regularly

The fish wasn't very fresh... as though it were all premade the night before. However, very friendly staff~
