    Review by Don Ellis
As in most neighbourhoods on the cusp, original residents and scenesters rarely meet. You won't find an old-timer inside a shiny new bar and you won't find a hipster in a neighbourhood joint. At first glance, Supermarket looks like yet another Kensington Market spot aimed at the effortlessly entertained crowd. It could easily be lumped in among the Embassy, The Last Temptation, La Palette and other character bars inhabited by rancorous art-student types and sedate locals out to off those who done 'em wrong.

Once known for its broken furniture, sticky floor, and pool tables, 268 Augusta is now home to one of the best bar relocations in recent history. Supermarket came to this address when the owners of the much-loved Lava lost that location to unstoppable condo development. Now that the bar has moved three blocks up the street, it seems to have a new lease on life. Same staff, same regulars, only now there's more room and, thank god, food. There are also three diversely appealing areas: a glassed-in front lounge area, a main drinking and dining area (with the familiar banquettes from Lava); and, as the final crowning touch, out front a patio awaits that - when that time rolls around - holds the promise of sidewalk parties galore.

Supermarket boasts a solid menu. Thai basil chicken ($8.50) with chillies & julienned vegetables tossed with a sweet soy sauce; Crispy fillet of sole pieces ($10.95) wok-fried with a sweet & sour jalepino sauce; The Grilled steak satay ($9.95) arrives wrapped in rice paper with green papaya, Thai basil, peanuts and pickled lotus served with a sweet jalapeño lemongrass dip; The Panko encrusted salmon cakes ($11.95) are served with a roasted chipolte bell pepper sauce served with Asian coleslaw with a ginger sesame dressing; and the Braised oxtail & veal shank ($9.95) comes with lemongrass topped with Thai basil.

Supermarket is something fun for the locals, the Lava regulars and, hopefully, a fresh new crowd. When viewed through that lens, Supermarket plays like a fine Kensington shed of dipsomania, or a variation on a theme worked over in Embassy: a sweet cafe-bar that has been instantly adopted by the ‘hood. Supermarket, may not have groceries, but it does have dance-crash, grab, bash, and sweat. Expect left-of-centre DJs and a scarves and t-shirt crowd. -D.E.

If you're willing to wait an hour for your food, then it's pretty tasty. We went as a party of 10 with reservations, however, as a group you have to order from a share/tapas menu. If you prefer to order an individual dish you will have to sit there and watch everyone else chow down as they're left with no choice but to start eating or to wait an hour for your food to arrive. The music is nothing special and the crowd can be strangely awkward at best. The drinks are regularly priced. I've been here a few times because of other birthdays and have been unsuccessful in deterring each new friend. All and all, an over-rated place that is convenient for those who live in the area with nothing better to do.

Worth the wait. On several occassions I had tried sameday weekend reservations with no luck so this time i decided to get one earlier in the week. Called back promptly letting me know that a table will be reserved for our party Friday. Unlike other reviewers the service was good. Didnt do anything extraordinary but didnt have to as he wa attentive and quick with drinks and suggestions. Food came out very quickly...all dishes...and were very tasty. Our menu was typical, try many items and none disappointed. Only issues would be that you dont realize how tapas type dishes add up so that was a bit of surprise but shouldn't have been (we all did leave full), and the bathrooms were absolutely freezing so you didnt want to take much time in there.
Music on Friday night very cool and as the drink crowd fills up the place it makes for a great night.
    Thank you Supermarket

The food is great at Supermarket. The service is slow, but it's more of a sip your drink, eat, laugh & take your time kind of place. It's refreshing to have a place where you can have a great meal, great tunes & shake your ass after dinner!

What started off as a nice evening prompty ended by a rude server ignoring us from the beginning to the end of our meal. Not only did she not ask us how our meal was, she did not fill our water glasses and forgot to bring us our dessert.... BUT.... still charged us for it. Although we dined together, our entrees came out an hour apart!!
The food was extremely tasty... and the cook even gave his approval.. as he tasted the soup (mouth to ladle) in front of the customers in the open concept kitchen.
The plates and cutlery were dirty and we were not impressed overall with the hygiene.
The atmosphere boasted mr rabid vs doctor artwork however it was not enough to compensate for the substandard service.
We are normally easy to please customers and we have both worked in the hospitality industry.... but this is exceptionally bad service and there is no excuse.

Just got back from a night at Supermarket. Awesome Dj and great frienldy crowd. No attitude and no hang ups a nice change from the king west and college strip snobbery. However, the bouncers were another story, very unfriendly and unprofessional. Perhaps they were having a bad night, but definiately there were on a power trip of soome sort, you felt like they were doing you this huge favor. Alex and the other Asian bouncers, you really gotta lose that snotty attitude, you're giving supermarket a bad rep if you two are the first experiences people have when they get there. All in all a great place, if you manage to get past the egotistical bouncers.
