Moving on to the list of mains, which is relatively short. Not surprising, as we are in the chef's seat. With some notable exceptions, the menu reads safe and uneventful: swordfish with sun-dried tomato pesto, Jumbo prawns & scallops, and an eight-oz Bison rib-eye served with a glazed shallot & cherry brandy jus.
For our 8 oz Provimi veal tenderloin and 10 oz Certified Angus Beef strip loin, hot rocks and raw meats arrive, and our daunting task is underway. A Madagascar peppercorn sauce added sparkle to the naturally bland tenderloin. For grilling, the meat is best cut into strips. Likewise with the New Zealand rack of lamb ($25.00) and the Angus Beef tenderloin ($29.00). The prawns & scallops are fairly salty but deliver good chewy texture. Next time, though, I'd pass on the shrimp, which were short on flavour – even with the dill beurre blanc - and tricky to grill without overcooking.
It’s no gastronomic epiphany, just a very well-cooked and gratifying plate of food. And, as for the restaurant space, it's a has remarkable transformation from the boozery that it once was. The noise level can drown out conversation but doesn’t seem to darken the conviviality. Nor does the sometimes ragged waitstaff, seemingly disorganized one night, but much smoother on a later visit. And Kudos for the fine lounge area, which has been re-visited often since.

10 Reader Reviews | I am a local resident of Cabbagetown and read the last review. Have you dined out before? You commented that the value of your meal consisting of a tenderloin and a striploin with sides was too pricey. Have you seen other restaurants? I also wanted to comment on Wendy's comment. The change in the restaurant has been for the better. They now have a value, or as they call it, "neighbourhood menu", on Tuesdays, they have a price fixe menu using the local farmer's market on Wednesdays and they also have Michi Tanaka as a guest chef on Thursdays doing some sushi items alongside their menu. The change is what cabbagetown needs. As for my experience I have seen the menu evolve, but just like any other restaurant, staff does change, but the core staff is still there. Keep up the good work!

Beware of FOOD POISONING! ========================
I took a friend here this past friday for her birthday, we wanted to try something new and fun and stonegrill seemed like a great place to try. The atmosphere and our servers were absolutely great and friendly, after the meal (we had the tenderloin and angus steak off the stonegrill selections) I felt somewhat unsatisfied, the one choice of side given for each main course was very small, but it was a lot of fun cooking our meat on the slabs of stone and I considered it still a good overall experience.
That was until the next day, about 12hours after when the fever, cold sweats, abdominal pains, nausea and diahrea came. After several long hours of pain and being professionally medicated, I now find myself now able to write this review and will attempt to have my first meal since Stonegrill in a couple hours.
I can only suggest you be careful when eating at Stonegrill it was unfortunate as it seemed to be a great place to eat.
In terms of prices they were a little high priced at 102.00 for two people after tax and tip.

This is what happens when become over-confident after insinuating yourself into a community as the rich aunt. I've written before that this was a great place. Well, I've been back a number of times since then and it's going right downhill. Not only are the prices for the simple items just unrealistic, the mains are overzealous and do not meet my expectations. I also notice there is a change in the kitchen staff, and the same with the servers. The servers are becoming arrogant and somewhat "this is just a job" sloppy attitude. I don't see the same faces in the kitchen, and there seems to be a strained atmosphere overall. The food has become boring. One of my favourite starters, the gnocchi, is pasty and not as flavourful as before. Recently I tried the bison ribeye again and it was tough and tasted a little liverish. I might give it another chance, but the last 3 times have been a disappointment. When you bring your concerns to the management, a free cognac or licquor is slight compensation.

Boy oh Boy oh Boy - what a wonderful meal every time! I had the chance to eat at the Stonegrill since it first came to Cabbagetown and have been very impressed with the food, cooking on the stones, the ambiance and friendliness of the staff. I've had a couple of brunches on Sundays and dinners several times. But I was worried when there was a change in the kitchen when Chef Tim left and I was wondering what would happen. Sous Chefs Anthony and Erin took over AND THEY ARE AMAZING! Especially this young man Anthony. I freaked when I found out he's only 22! And Erin is great too. So far I've eaten there about 8 times and cannot complain about a single thing. I seem to get the same servers most of the time (Jo & Ant) and they make my day! They are so entertaining and attentive without being smothering. The owners should count their blessings that they have such great staff. Keep up the good work everyone. I'll be back again and again.

Stonegrill on Winchester is very, very good, the food is excellent, and the service is very good when not flagrantly flamboyant or in-your-face cutesy, or on those occasions you don’t get served by a waitress who simply doesn’t give a damn. But what a mistake they are making on New Years.
You can have a steak there on any day for $29 or $30....but a $95 menu on New Years Eve sounds wild and out of whack! For a neighborhood eatery? They are NOT the Four Seasons! So many restaurants try to rob the eyes out of the regulars on New Years...and the $95 doesn't include taxes, or tips, or wine with dinner. So 2 people will have to spend $250 just to sit down before they order so much as a coffee. And NO LIVE MUSIC! So since when did a sorbet for palate cleansing count as a FULL COURSE? And who wants a 5-course meal there anyway? We usually share fries, and calamari, and mashed potatoes. So suddenly it's the RITZ? Get real. If the owners don't even understand what there own restaurant is, and their own market they obviously haven't got a clue. Not to mention respect for regular customers. If you price New Years out of reach of the regulars you've just pissed them off for supporting you and embarrassed them for inquiring. You drive them away. And make yourselves the laughing stock in the community at the same time. People talk, and Cabbagetown is only several hundred houses. $95? 5 courses? Who needs you? Greed! The city has buried enough greedy owners. I won't go back just because of the nerve of it. At that markup, McDonald's would make a fortune on New Years with $20 Big Macs and $15 fries! Maybe not. No one would go there either if they tried! At least they know their customers!
STONEGRILL, hang a sign outside that reads 'OUR REGULARS AND OTHER FOOLS WELCOME ON SPECIAL NIGHTS WHEN WE CAN ROB YOU BLIND'
No one wants a 5 course meal from you. No one wants a fancy meal from you. No one wants your earlier $65 meal either, because we’d have to leave by 8:30, and no one parties at 8:30 and keeps on drinking. Good luck! I’ll pass by your window and chuckle at your empty room!
95.00 price per person
14.25 tax @ 15%
17.10 tip @ 18%
126.35 Total EACH.
252.70 / COUPLE. Digusting!
And I bet you think we should jump up and down at the prospect of a glass of sparkling wine included you bought at $12 a bottle or less!
Good riddance!
Wayne,
Your former customer who has been there over a half dozen times.
p.s. with all the people who work there, isn’t there even one person who said this isn’t a good idea? That this has nothing to do with what Stonegrill is about? Fools! Spread the word!
