But here it is. By partnering with Kenyan chef David Ng’ang’a (who worked at Irie Food Joint where Couillard was guest chef), the two have taken over the space that was once The Hazelton Café (another '80s spot).
Manyata Courtyard Café seats 150 people, but a little deeper in is Couillard’s little Spice Room. Dropping all theatricality, the 40-seat space is high-African, mixing polished floors with deep, rich colours. Though it may have the impersonal appearance of an antihip, dimly lighted hotel restaurant, with servers efficiently dashing dishes to and from the kitchen, the Spice Room is best enjoyed as a fascinating evening of total submission. Don't come here just to revel in pre-theatre or post-shopping, but to swoon over dishes that celebrate bold spices from Morocco, India and Indochina.
Couillard has re-examined his palette, this time beefing his usage of spices up to eerie levels of hotness. But he knows his stuff. Who knew, for example, that as unlikely a pairing as chili, kaffir lime and lemongrass could further fuel a succulent Lobster & Seafood Bisque? (Or that a cream-based soup could set you back a whopping $16.00?)
In his fiery quest, Couillard has come up with a menu that is surprisingly small, with six appetizers and four mains, with flavours that are set by top-quality spices and sauces that have a larger role than mere accents. Those who aren’t into very spicy food need not apply, that much I recall from the plump breast of young chicken ($34.00), marinated in yogurt with cardamom, garlic and green chili.

I went to this restaurant for the first time tonight, and i was disgusted by the service i recieved considering it is in a high end toronto neighbourhood. The waiter was inept and most of our party got there between 6:30 and 7:30pm, he took our orders, and one hour later came back asking, if everyone placed their orders. We were incredulous. He hadn't given our orders to the chef yet. We waited for 2 hours for appetizers and a further 1 hour for the main!! They (the waiter and manager) were not apologetic. They made us wait 45min for simple cocktails. Our tea lights burnt right down (4 hour burning tealights) by the time the food arrived. Getting to a restaurant at an average time of 7pm and not being able to leave due to late food arriving at 11pm is unacceptable. We spent the entire time feeling neglected, eventhough the restaurant wasn't busy and my friends and i had the entire Courtyard of the Manyata. The Spice and Chutney Bar dinner menu is what is served. The food wasn't bad, but the service was atrocious! and in my book, service ranks very high along with a delicious meal. They misadvertised my meal. I ordered the Snapper and it was suppose to come with coconut rice, it did not, they substitued barley. They didn't apologize for the substitution, they didn't offer a discount, they didn't okay a discount when asked. They were indifferent, dismissive, and rude. We ended up sitting in darkness, and the waiter finally stopped coming by. The mood got almost hostile, when they started shutting down the lights before we even got our bill. They never separated the bill either eventhough we asked (we were a table of 15). I will never go back to the Spice Room and Chutney bar and unless you're a glutton for punishment, or you have no other commitments and you can wait for 4 hours to get a meal, i would avoid this restaurant like the plague!!!
I DO NOT recommend this restaurant. Save your money and especially your time! thanks to them, the second half of my evening didn't happen as i was unable to get there in time. And the Spice Room wasn't even busy either to justify the wait, poor service and just general indifference. You want to be acknowledged and appreciated when you spend the money they are asking you to spend. My party of 15 and myself unanimously agreed we will never return back.

I also had a negative experience at the Spice Room and Chutney Bar that occured 2 weeks ago. The waiter was unforgivably rude when we asked how much longer our meal would be. I went to the manager, (well groomed guy in a striped shirt standing not too far from the main bar), and told him of my experience. He dismissed me, didn't seem to want to listen or care. This kind of service is preposterous for the clientele they are serving. My meal alone came up to nearly $100.00 and the service I received was comparable to a low end, fast food outlet where they can't make proper change for you. He didn't offer me a discount, or at the very least offer me a complimentary drink, coffee, desert. Nothing. I was appalled with the general lack of good customer service. If they are so concerned with pinching every last penny out of a customer rather than making sure that cutomer walks away happy and able to talk highly of the place, than I know for a fact i won't be returning there ever again, and i'll make sure anyone, website, whatever, i come across hears of my wholly negative experience at this supposed high end restaurant. It's rather a lofy, false claim to sophistication and class, that falls well below the mark.
In addition i forgot my parking slip in my car, and asked if they wouldn't mind to offer money to validate the parking. Our table's bill was $975.00 before gratuities. They couldn't offer 5 dollars toward the parking fee. NEVER AGAIN. I was so embarassed after entertaining my well connected friends that flew all the way from Australia to visit me. I hope they don't think all restaurants in Toronto is as disgusting as the service they recieved in the Spice Room and Chutney Bar. If i could give a rating of half a star, or even no star, i would!!
