Skybar’s warmth sneaks up on you; credit an extremely unattractive Gardiner Expressway (by day), that appears a freakish accessory (by night) attached to the Skybar’s permanent fashion runway. Look in the other direction, and we have the lakeshore, also working it much more impressively by night than by day.
Fridays and Saturdays bring a high-spirited crowd of 20 to 30-something well-dressed professionals eating up the eclectic beats of R&B, Hip Hop and 2-Step. But Thursdays are audaciously fashion-themed nights usually involving semi-dressed models on the runway. These ‘Stilife’ events, which features DJ Mark Oliver on the decks, draws the best-dressed, most stifling crowd.
“I’ll be here as long as there’s a Guvernment,” says resident DJ Oliver. Oliver got his start spinning at the Tazmanian Ballroom, a late ‘80s club at Jarvis and Richmond. But it was Guvernment where he had made the biggest impression, helping brand the ‘star DJ’ label he now enjoys. But in the early days, Oliver was typically paid around forty bucks.
