  • Shanghai Cowgirl

While most of the town's hot restaurants will turn you away for misplacing your Bruno Maglis, here is one to dine to the nines on the cheap.

Shanghai Cowgirl is a lighthearted study in all things diner: the whole theme, from the banquettes and seating around the room to the long luncheonette bar, recalls a 1931 diner - Queen Street style. Shanghai’s fresh look reflects its unassuming yet transporting spirit, buoyed by fun-loving waitstaff, dolled up in bright orange T-shirts.

A meal at Shanghai Cowgirl will not dazzle with its variety, but the kitchen makes sure to turn out "old reliable" staples and a modest amount of flair. The shining example among these would have to be the tender pink-centered liver served with rich garlic gravy; piled with caramelized onion; thickly sliced roast beef with creamy spuds and crunchy coleslaw. Also, the Trailer Trash Sushi with grilled moist chicken breast on Portuguese pada, watercress and wasabi-spiked mayo is something else.

But, it is the grilled cheese sandwich that is the Shanghai cash cow. For $4.35 you get a grilled cheese, with your choice of cheddar or processed cheese. Other diner-types render the grilled cheese as a bland, processed thing. Make no mistake, Shanghai’s grilled cheese is a processed thing, it seems to be the wonderbread and the diner staple French fries (or opt for the mashed potatoes) that seems to complete the thing.

And Shanghai churns out solid bacon and eggs all day long, constantly arriving at tables with confident, comfortingly high levels of saturated fat…and a bottomless cup of coffee for a most satisfying first meal of the day.

My friend and I were in desperate need of a comfy patio with fresh good food at a good price. So we, two picky dont really ever eat greasy food girls, ventured over to Shhangai Cowgirl. The patio is relaxing - a quiet oasis on a rather grungy street. The service is patient- not to mention timely and in tune with the menu. The burgers were really good (not good bun/patty ratio though) and the fries really can't be beat. The salads at these places I find are generally not that fresh - but Shanghai has great dressings and good veggies. No compliants!!

I have never had such a horrible experience at a diner, restaurant or whatever.

Sunday hangover day, breakfast was on all of our minds. We go to Shanghai Cowgirl to satisfy our cravings.

Our waitress was in a horrible mood (even went out of her way to tell us) and certainly let her actions show it as well.
A list of what she did wrong:
1)Left the table without taking one persons drink order (out of 5 of us)
2)brought out incorrect drinks, waters that looked like they had been sitting out for a long while because the ice cubes had melted to a pea size, my apple juice was served in a bottle, but the cap was unsealed which I couldn't drink because of suspicion.
3)She brings out coffee and instead of taking the cup from the table, decides to reach over and pour so closely to my brother that it touches his hand and burns him

My brother and I order breakfast, I specifically asked for my homefries to be well done, she brings them out stating that they are well done and they are cold and raw. Just like my brothers plate. The eggs weren't cooked and still gooey and runny and even the toast was unedible. (Not to mention she had the wrong toast on the wrong plate, (I shouldn't be so picky, but after so many screw ups it was the icing on the cake).

Both my brother and I could not eat the breakfast and sent it back. Instead I ordered a side of fries to which she made me pay for as well. So for a side of overly greasy fries and an awful experience it cost me $17.00.

I will continue to tell people of what a horrible place it was.

Located in the best neighborhood in Toronto, Shanghai Cowgirl offers a great indoor/outdoor seating arrangement filled with friendly people and hardcore partiers that are still going strong at 10am the following day. Although the service is quite slow, the food is great, classic comfort food. From burgers and fries to bacon and eggs, they have all the originals at a comforting price. I personally had an amazing grilled cheese with a twist....guacamole!! It was quite delicious and greasy, the perfect filling after a night of partying!
