  • Sarah's Shawarma and Falafel

    Review by Scott Tavener
The students-are-poor stereotype is more myth than fact. Many, many years ago, I was a student and I was rich (thank you, government of Ontario). Students like to act poor (see Pulp's "Common People") because it has a cool cache. True, some students struggle through academia while working two jobs while enduring a grueling class/study schedule (not Arts students), though most either come from money or borrow it.

That said, not everyone in the Annex is a student. On the other hand, almost everyone in the world likes either falafel or shawarma. Poor or not, Sarah's provides wrapped Middle Eastern fare for the affluent and poverty-stricken alike, offering 2 for deals and the best rotating meat and veg balls on Bloor street. In a neighbourhood awash in affordable bite options, it stands out as a bastion of quality. With its newly painted white walls and homey atmosphere, is has been an area favourite for years. -S.T.
