n a city that emphatically embraces Thai, Japanese, and Indian food, as well as Chinese dishes from a dizzying number of regions, there is still one major Asian cuisine so unknown to many Torontonians that it's as if it were meant to be a secret.
And it almost is. Korean food: bold, healthful, a treasure for the adventurous - has almost been reserved for Koreans, while restaurants have made little effort to reach beyond the traditional clientele. But that is slowly changing. Some wonderful dishes are emerging from their cloisters: delicious fried dumplings, crisp potato, and scallion pancakes, hearty noodle soups, and barbequed beef, sweetly charred along the edges.
Asia's most robust cuisine combines favorite flavors: sugar, salt, spice, and peppers. It is fresh, healthy, and low in cholesterol. Toronto’s Korean restaurants are found, for the most part, on Bloor and Bathurst. Yet, the sleekest of the lot is San, fitting in nicely on the other side of town, on Queen Street West.
San has opted for a sleek, cool decor that fits the neighbourhood like a glove. In fact, it looks more like another minimalist fusion lounge than the Korean eatery that it is. Fitted with handsome metallic stools and a sleek black granite bar that has an elegant, Brancusi feel to it., the decor is uncompromising black; the exterior is one black wall.

I dined at San a few days after I ate at Seoul City. Sorry to say it failed in comparison! The food was less than average, service was non existant to say the least! If you want to try Korean food with a little twist, definately try Seoul City Restaurant!

It's easily the best Korean restaurant in town. It has a great selection of Korean menu items, Korean beer and Soju, too!
Another reviewer decreed the appearance of sushi at San. I believe the reviewer wrote that sushi and Korean food don't mix. I think this would come as as great suprise to Koreans! Kimbap, as sushi is called in Korea, is as Korean as is the moveable type press and claims that Koreans invented both are true.
If you are familiar or unfamiliar with Korean food, try San for yourself and ignore the ignorant.

Okay for Toronto...
My tastebuds are spoiled, and my philosophy reads "be as critical as can be to the pros"...San probably deserves 3 stars for Toronto but comparing to the other major cities of the world, 2 at best.
Positives first.
Food was good. Not exceptional, but great for its price. Loved the rice too, so difficult to find restaurants that serve rice with other types of grains in Toronto. Decor is pretty cool, particularly for a Korean restaurant, where as martiniboys pointsout, tends to be traditional and catering only to Korean clientele. Also nice to know that their vegetables are organic. Side dishes (comes free with Korean meals) were refreshing, a nice change from usually oily fare from other Korean eateries.
But comes the negatives.
Few varieties to the menu. Get those pseudo Japanese off the menu and add more Korean dishes please!! Afterall, it IS a Korean restaurant...I don't quite get why there are as many more more Japanese dishes than there are Korean.....Just please tell me why, WHY DO EVERY NICE LOOKING KOREAN RESTAURNTS IN TOWN HAS TO HAVE SUSHI, TERIYAKI, AND THE LIKES OF OTHER BORING JAPANESE FARE IN THEIR MENU?!?! I wonder if that is the only possible way they can attract reserved Torontonians to venture into a Korean eatery. Sushi and Korean food doesn't mix. I've never had decent sushi in a restaurant that serves sushi with Korean/Chinese food. I know of some excellent Korean/Chinese sushi chef, but they don't serve Korean/Chinese food at their restaurants. Can't kill 2 birds with 1 stone, hon.
The staff needs a bit more training...friendly and helpful, but did not know how to handle a full house.
All in all, it wasn't bad. Pretty good food for a resonable price.
Would I come back again? Maybe, if I feel like eating Korean when in the neighborhood. I woudn't come out just to eat here. It's good, but there are other restaurants that serve same quality/price range, but with more Korean dishes to choose from. Pehaps my expectation was too high, but there are just too few Korean dishes.
