ASam James Coffee Barsk any true caffeine junkie in Toronto to give you a rundown of the city's best coffee shops, and their list will look something like this: Hank's, Cherry Bomb, Red Rocket, Manic Coffee and Dark Horse Espresso. What's the common thread? Sam James. The fresh-faced 25 year old has earned his title as one of the best baristas in the city not only by working the espresso machines at the most respected cafes indie cafes in the city, but also by competing (and often winning) in Barista championships. He may not be a household name, but it's hard to think of anyone more qualified to open his own coffee shop. Now that he's found a suitable location a bit off the beaten track of Harbord Street (i.e. west of Bathurst), the man finally has a café to call his own, the Sam James Coffee Bar.

It's no secret that this is a showcase of Sam and his celebrated barista skills. With his name front and centre (a rarity for Toronto coffee shops), Sam James Coffee Bar is a reflection of Sam's singular caffeine-addled vision and philosophy. Unlike many of the city's snob-pleasing indie cafes (where vintage Coca Cola signs seem to be a mandatory design element), the design is extremely clean and simple, not so much a place to hang out for hours on your MacBook as a place to enjoy a superior cup of Joe. This is indeed a European style coffee bar: small, bright, and unfussy. The walls are white, the floors are tiled, and there are only five seats in the whole space. It's the kind of place where you'll order your coffee at the bar and drink it at the bar.

There's a reason that that design doesn't call attention to itself. It's not because Sam hasn't put much thought into it (he tells me he's been writing hypothetical floor plans long before he actually had a space), but because the focus is strictly on product and service. Sam is in his shop any time it's open, and the other two baristas he's employed (from Manic Coffee and Dark Horse) have also cut their teeth in upscale coffee joints and competitions. The word that keeps coming up over and over again is "craftsmanship."

James laments the increasing automated approach to making coffee. "I just can't get down with it," he says. "It's disrespectful to the craft. It's all about pride and personality. You can't get that from a machine. I don't want to serve anyone anything I'm not comfortable with." Sam James' coffee, an exclusive fair trade brand from Montreal called Toi Moi, is roasted onsite and make use of the single origin wine model. All syrups and mocha sauces are made in house, and drip coffees are made with a French Press. Everything is hand-measured and handmade.

"Just a cup of coffee" is a phrase that isn't in Sam James' vocabulary. Although he's been around from café to café, he claims that it was Hank's that really shaped him because of the presence of its owner, Toronto super-chef Jamie Kennedy. "That was one of the more impressive places I've ever worked," he says. "Jamie Kennedy's places are all about his personality, and that's why he's so involved. He's not afraid to get his hands dirty, and neither am I." James seems to have adopted a lot of Kennedy's practices in producing upscale cuisine and applied them to making lattes, espressos, and macchiatos.

Great local place to hang out, grab a coffee or a quick bite. Bright and cheery. Small though (!!)

A tiny coffee shop on Harbord. Emphasis on tiny. But the people that work it are nice and friendly, you don't really notice too much. I'm also a fan of the music they play.

I was reading (again) about Sam’s coffee shop (Toronto Star, this time), and I thought good for him. So I stopped in today. It’s cute. The coffee they use is similar coffee to the Dark Horse variety but somehow smoother.

Anyways the coffee is good the prices are comparable to other coffee shops. Go check it out.

Nice place, interesting clientele, good music. Patrons range from hipsters to young professionals. This place should package and sell mp3 CDs of their playlist. Way better than that Starbucks crap.

Sure, the lines look long when you walk in, but the baristas are fast, and you always get to your sorry way.

I don't even drink coffee, but my boyfriend's rave reviews motivated me to check it out.
I took my first sip of the vanilla latte just outside the door, then turned around and went right back in to tell Sam "Wow, that's amazing coffee"

only ever get coffee here but it's by far one of my favorite places for Joe. The staff is really cool & quite friendly. I just wish that I spoke better "barrista" because I'm pretty sure my buddy & the staff have about half a dozen jokes at my expense!

Needless to say the coffee is very good or I probably wouldn't have trecked to no-mans land during the daytime. It gets an interesting cross section of hipsters and office workers... There are only two tiny tables there, and window seats, making it cozy... but the espresso makes it worth every ounce of effort to get there.

Neat little space, Sam has done a great job. Not sold on the beans though - bitter and burnt aftertaste. Not for me.

The espresso we ordered were very smokey and acidic, and they tasted burnt. This was by far the most unpleasant espresso I have ever tasted. The atmosphere was welcoming and comfortable though.

Sam James Coffee Bar... I wish they were as ubiquitous as Starbucks. Oh well.

I am looking forward to my return visit to his spartan but tasteful shop. I was in the habit, for a while, of starting my visits to coffee shops - upscale shops - with an espresso, just to really get a handle on the beans being served up. Then I'd settle in with Americanos or macchiatos or even both. Unconciously, I stopped doing that and started to zero in on what I thought this or that shop could do best. I became anxious to just find some satisfaction. Sam rekindled my love of coffee and that old routine, because his espresso (at least when I was in the first time) knocked my socks off.

Whether he realizes it or not, Sam scores on another test. He makes coffee interesting. Just being a genuine craftsman who can communicate coffee to his customers would earn him passing marks in that regard. But by having french press coffee (brewed and then promptly put into thermals) and siphon coffee on tap, he makes the visit to his shop memorable. If you didn't try everything on your first visit, then you'll probably be thinking you've got to go back and try what you missed. I know, because I'm looking forward to returning and trying some of that siphon coffee, which I've never had. First, espresso. Then siphon. Then...

Thing is, When you know it's all good, it doesn't matter what you drink. You can't lose.

If you are hard-core coffee drinker this is the place to get your latte, americano, cappucino. It is a no nonsense, no frills, coffee house with fabulous free-trade beans, and a good espresso machine ( not one of the new automatic machines that massacre espresso beans).

Mai, we have a Nespresso machine at home and a foamer. My homemade lattes are far better than any latte I can get anywhere.
