Rockwood

Review by Trevor Finn
Does size matter? Over the years, clubs have continued to grow in girth and complexity. As owners have tried to out-do each other in a mine-is-bigger-than-yours contest, quality has suffered. As a reaction to these excesses a welcome new trend toward simplicity is emerging. Enter Rockwood.

It’s getting quite sylvan in Clubland as Rockwood joins Grass at Tommy King’s Mercer Street complex. Like Grass, Rockwood has a theme. Do you know what it is? Come on, I know it’s tricky. No, not urban decay, damn it, it’s Rock and Wood. While the rock portion of the club doesn’t open until November, wood has already been unveiled, so it’s wood that we’ll focus on (I’m a child).

Fittingly, the club is overwhelmingly brown, accented with occasional cream splashes. As a slight respite (rhyming is fun), the washroom tiles have a luminescent clamshell sheen to them. All this darkness and wood screams masculinity. While clubs like Chinadoll focus on exaggerated feminine flair décor, Rockwood provides a macho ambiance alternative. The lighting, though complimentary now, had originally been quite dark, giving the club a Little-Red-Riding-Hood-being-chased-through-the-forest feel that has thankfully subsided.

Though not very large, the earth tones and plush seating make Rockwood hunting shack cozy. It boasts six(ish) spots for bottle service parties, with little other seating available. Is sitting down worth shelling out for a bottle? Have a few drinks then think it through.

Havent even got to the club, we are heading there tonight, but service for this place already sucks, we booked bottle service in advance and today we get a call saying they have double booked it, and we have no booth but we can still come in guestlist line, pay cover and get a bottle at the bar, which is stupid, dont bother with this place its a waste of time and bad service/management

Probably one of the worst bars I have ever been to, with potential to be one of the best. First of all, we had a group of 20 and reserved a booth for bottle service that was supposed to seat all 20 of us and it only had room for 4. On top of that, they made us pay $20 cover when we were getting bottle service. They don't even do that in LA and South Beach!!! The service was HORRIBLE!!! We ran out of juice for our drinks and it took 30 minutes to get some more and 4 people had to ask for some before they finally brought some over. On top of that, some young people at the booth next to us were smoking cigarettes and cigars all night long in the club and the bouncers (who stood right next to them) did not do a single thing. Lastly, it was soooooooooo hot in there I don't even think they turned the air conditioning on! We were NOT impressed!
The bar itself is very nice looking, relatively big (3 floors but each individual floor is small) and they played great music which is the one thing I will commends them on!

Only place in the City where I can coke up and have a salad without some greasy guineas shouting and swearing like the 905 skids they is.

So me and my friend went to Rockwood... and before i even start..we are somewhat of Club Connoisseurs..we both work 70 hours a week, so when we go out, we party hard...
We've been hitting up these mature clubs recently, and Rockwood came in our sights..

When we walked in, it was about 1 am..obviously there was no lineup..lol. We noticed that the bouncers were not aggresive at all...and they didn't grunt at us.. we where greeted with a "whats up!", i gave them my ID, and they pointed us to the cash...10 bucks wasn't bad.

So we get in and instantly we realized that we hit the jackpot...everyone was dressed nice...they played some nice hiphop RnB, classics...everyone behaved, everyone moved, bartender was friendly...and overall, it was one of the better clubs i've been to..
One big difference between this club and most other clubs...no drama!..

The beat was hiphop, rnb, little dance at the end..some latin, and everyone was moving...

Everyone was there to have a good time...

but i do have to mention..there was a birthday party going on, and it was a big party. We might go back this friday to check it out again.

How can anyone call this place good?? After having rain destroy my group's bottle service in Grass, we ended up in Wood. We walked into what felt like a sauna and were bombarded with the crappiest of reggae/hip hop music for pretty much the whole night. I truly felt like I was back at the Docks for an all ages night... The crowd wasn't really much to write home about either. Same mix of underage girls who think far too much of themselves and annoying guys who don't leave you alone. If you want to have a good time on a Saturday night, go somewhere else!

Missed out on the Grass scene but stumbled across ROCKwood in November. Since November, the club has become my failsafe destination.

On more Saturday’s then I’d like, I leave what terrible excuse of a party some friend has convinced me to check out and head to ROCKwood. Why?
* other than being greeted at the door, I don't notice a bouncer in the place - things run smoothly
* the girls behind the bar not only look phenomenal but are friendly and attentive
* music is almost perfect - the DJ on wood spins some of the best house music I've heard in Toronto while the ROCK DJ creates a solid party (only beef is that sometimes he gets stuck on too much hip hop)
* washrooms are clean, with no lines, and the attendants, while still useless, are bearable

Most importantly, however, where else does the owner make a personal effort to make sure everyone is having a great time?

I consider myself an experienced Toronto partier, hitting the town almost every weekend. Rockwood is a perfect venue for anyone who likes their beats (Wood) but also likes to party to other styles of music (Rock). Rockwood is intimate enough that you don't get lost in a sea of partiers, yet large enough to be able to dance your ass off! One thing I noticed about Rockwood is that there was a good mix of ladies and gents, unlike some other clubs that seem to turn into sausauge parties! Clean washrooms, friendly staff, and most importantly, door staff that treats everyone fairly. Highly recommend checking this place out.

Rockwood is one of the most original places I have been to in a while. They have 2 floors with 2 unique sounds yet the crowd is still classy and upscale on both floors regardless of musical tastes. The decor is awesome, the house DJ played some of the best house I have heard outside of big name DJs and in general all the staff was friendly and courteous. I have been there a few times now and each time it seems to get a little better and I think as more people find out about this place it will become one of the places to be.

me and 10 of my girls went to rockwood for their Absolut vodka party, and i must say that we had the time of our life.the club attracts a mature crowd so you can be sure that no one is here to bug you.

Plus we were greated at the door with a nice smile ,contrary to other venues were bouncers give you mean looks .music was nice on both floors and we did not stop dancing all night.

Thanks to the above raters.
I was planning to go there with about 15 close friends on Saturday, but I'll have to look elsewhere as 'waiting' sucks.
