After reviewing clubs and restaurants for any significant length of time, you begin to see the same buildings, people and ideas recycled like bad reality TV show concepts (can anyone tell the difference between Don’t Forget the Lyrics and the Singing Bee, because I can’t). As I arrived at Riva, I was greeted with a nagging sense of Déjà vu. The last time I was at 584 College Street was over two years ago for the grand opening of 65 Degrees. The style wasn’t typical College Street chic: an old-fashioned steakhouse look - classy but not youthful; pretty, but not hip. Upon first inspection it seemed that not much has changed since it became Riva; it isn’t so much new as it is re-imagined.

There is a certain wisdom in keeping what works and changing what doesn’t. Case in point: Riva has kept much of the original front area intact. The gorgeous wood bar remains, as do the unique art/mirror-like installations hanging on the exposed brick walls. I must admit, I had trouble at first even noticing what had changed.

But as I continued along my tour of the restaurant, the alterations became more apparent. One of 65 Degrees’ main design flaws was the large imposing booths in the narrow hallway next to the kitchen. Rather than being removed entirely, the booths have been adjusted and opened to eradicate claustrophobia and increase exclusivity. Their close proximity to the bustling kitchen may still be an issue for those who enjoy quiet dining, but the charm of this intimate seating arrangement and their ability to hold large parties more than makes up for their location.

The real prize, though, is the back room - a veritable light at the end of the tunnel. The walls have been painted a lighter shade of red, brightening the room while still retaining its class. The chandeliers strung around the restaurant echo ages – and restaurants – past, while the curved walls and impossibly high ceilings create a genuine sense of Victorian elegance. Though it appears fit for a scene from Interview With The Vampire , unfortunately Tom and Brad were not in attendance.

I passed by riva on saturday night and the only good thing there was the greeting of the bouncers but once i got inside the night got all messed up.starting with the waitresses attitude,no welcoming greeting,we had a time limit to order our food or the kitchen would close, the food was raw,we asked if it could be cooked again or warmed up instead they fried it with oil and still it was raw.while we were completing our dinner the waitress over there brings the bill and asks us to settle it while we were still eating and it was not even midnight.we paid and left the food and drinks on the table and she did not even bother to appologize or do the right thing.
overall its bad food, bad service, nice music.

We were at riva last week and everything was great. The food, service and ambiance were all much better then I would have expected from a place on college street. And last but not least the desserts were out of this world. I can't wait to go back to try some of the other items on the menu and would highly recommend riva to anyone looking for great food in a fun environment.

The service at Riva is great, down to the security. Everyone is friendly. The menu has a wide variety, and they even have mini-burgers, which are DELICIOUS. The vibe in the back room really get's you moving. The DJ's are amazing, and a bonus being women! Overall, I would say it's one of the best additions to College St for a long time. I really have enjoyed going to Riva, since it opened very recently. The review is right for the most part, but I have to say, most places you go to in Toronto aren't really innovative anyway. If you want to lose that Deja Vu feeling, go to New York or L.A. Go to Riva, you won't be disappointed.
