ake a tour of the restaurants that lie within the borders of Kensington Market - La Palette, Torito, Supermarket - and Rice Bar will start to look like the most valiant underdog. Whatever its angle, this street-level lair in the old Ra Ra Raw space is clearly more neighbourhood DIY eatery than hushed foodie destination.
It's doubtful you would break stride to notice Rice Bar, certainly not with the heavily-promoted shindigs going on down the street at Supermarket. Nor does its homespun dining room décor contain any dynamic feature to catch your eye. And yet Rice Bar’s individual components – bright green colouring, pillowcases hanging about - combine to create a room that, though spare and deliberately free of distractions, feels easy to take sanctuary in.
Owner Brock Shepherd (Azul, Canteena) has put together an urban anomaly - a too-hot-not-to-cool-down eatery that has confidently laid the groundwork for longevity. Gone is the sterilized look of a room. Rice Bar now feels bigger, brighter, colourful, and filled with earthy table settings. It has everything a little eatery should, including a very open-concept kitchen; you could almost yell your order, and many do.
The design may be pure budget, but it's a very serviceable restaurant. Damned likable, too, whatever your outlook on rice. The biggest alteration of the space comes in Shepherd’s kitchen. Here, he churns out sturdy, unglamorous dishes with military precision. Items like the Korean pizza - a scallion crepe with pesto, avocado and shrimp - can distract one from returning that all-important glance across the room. The solid Dragon Bowl of rice noodles in coriander pesto broth is thick with baby bok choy and spicy Korean kimchi and chicken (or shrimp or tofu).
But the house’s strength is in the design-your-own bowls; you choose the rice (jasmine, brown basmati, infused, infused or rice noodle). Once that’s done, you choose your protein: chicken, beef, shrimp or tofu. Then move on to pick the accompanying sauce, ranging from green coconut milk curry, lemongrass or a soy, sesame and ginger mix. Lastly, throw in your veg choice – baby spinach, black beans, bok choy – you even choose your garnish and any extras – Chimichurri, anyone?

18 Reader Reviews | Based on the review I've read here, I guess I got lucky, but I find my meal quite well prepared. Sure, it's just basic rice dishes, but I found it quite pleasant.
If you're looking for something that's not rice, obviously don't bother coming here.

i personally loveee rice bar. the first time i went there was last valentine's day with my boyfriend. the restaurant was candlelit and cozy, especially since it was really cold outside. i went again in the summer when they had a small outdoor patio. though it was more like a makeshift patio, it was still nice just sitting out in kensington with the sun shining. and the last time i was there, DREW BARRYMORE and her boyfriend JUSTIN LONG came in and sat right next to my friend and i for dinner and they LOVED the organic food.
ps: i definitely suggest the green coconut milk curry sauce.

Had high expectations for my jasmine rice with chicken and lemongrass sauce. Rice was dry and clumpy and the dull, salty sauce assumed the taste of everything in it. The chicken, although moist and tender, didn't taste like anything. Wanted to like it. Didn't.

I think this place is great. Maybe it has had some ups and down, but overall I find it delicious and pretty consistent. Where else can you get that kind of value for the quality that they offer.
My faves are the
cocktails and anything with the Black Olive Vanilla & Basil sauce!

I love this place! I think the pricing is very reasonable. A meal at MacDonalds is within the same price range as this and the food is fresh, tasty and to top it all the people are friendly and the place is filled with warmth. I go quite often and rave about it to all. The chimichurri is awesome! I had it recently with bok choy and pumpkin seeds..MMmmm!

I used to frequent this restraunt all the type because it offers organic reasonably priced food - $7 to $10. However, I find the food is very inconsistent - too sausy, not sausy enough. Also, some days it is heavily over salted and has almost no vegetables. Also, the take out containers don't make sense; I can't tell the difference between a small and a large. I do, however, appreciate the fact that they are using organic take out containers. If they could make their food more consistent, it would be a pretty descent place to eat. - j

Bland, boring, rice, sauce was tasteless. Price is good, but how can it not be when you're eating steamed rice with tasteless sauce and grilled, unseasoned meat? Highly recommended for health nuts, not recommended for food savvy consumers.

One word: bland and dull. Organic or not, taste is the key...there was no flavor as my self-created rice bowl seemed to have a watered down and boring sauce.

My ladyfriend and I are cocktail whores, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. When we go to L.A., Montreal, NYC… jesus everywhere we drop all our stupid money on awesome drinks. Well, mostly awesome, usually the latter cocktails are bought because we're drunk (i.e. "Why in the world did we order two more specialty drinks that are really not much more than Singapore Slings?").
That said, it's nice to go a place like Brock Shepperd's Rice bar and spend money on good cocktails that have been created by a true mixologist. The atmosphere is super cozy and friendly, and the little snacks make it possible to stay here from open to close, or at least until the alcohol catches up with the last bit of awake in your cerebral cortex.

It's a pretty good place for the value. The food is well prepared and healthy. It taste clean, the cook is not trying to do too much...it's good ingredients prepared in a way to showcase the natural flavours. I find you get value for the dollar.
