ulp Kitchen en is a little diner tucked into nondescript block near Queen and Logan, surrounded by used appliance dealers and furniture stores, and I consistently forget it exists. Then I remember. Then I forget. Then I drive by, and my memory gets jarred again. Now I think of Pulp Kitchen as my cash-in-the-pocket restaurant: You know how sometimes you pull a jacket out of the closet and suddenly there's a twenty in the pocket? And then, six months later, there it is again, another bill in another pocket? Every month or two I remember Pulp Kitchen, and I want to jump up and down screaming: Eureka! There's a restaurant in the middle of Leslieville that offers up vegetable juice, mushroom burgers, and organic coffee! And then I promptly forget all about it.
Recently, a bunch of us ambled down to the plain, bright cafe, and had one of the most warmly pleasing lunches I can remember. Caramel-toned French fries. Plump veg burgers on golden bakery buns. Crisp and creamy grilled cheeses. Frothy vegetable juices - like V8, but without the salt.
Speaking of juice: The first thing you should do when you sit down in one of Pulp Kitchen’s cafeteria-like chairs is order a glass of juiced Wheat Grass ($2.25), because if you wait too long you just might be out of luck.
To fortify yourself after that, Pulp Kitchen is a vegetarian’s paradise - hot soups made from scratch, vegetable chips with a warm garlicky artichoke dip to daily pasta specials. One lucky soul at our table had the Portabella Mushroom Burger with Tahini dressing and caramelized onions. Another item hitting the table was a thick and rich Garbanzo Bean Burger with roasted tomatoes.
