Fo r all of those who dream of a new place to find the perfect creamy, cheesy, deep fried wonder, poutine. Then, you, my friends, are in for a treat. Smoke's Poutinerie no longer has the French Fry monopoly over Toronto; Poutini House of Poutine has finally opened its doors in West Queen West.
Homegrown is the word in this French fry haven, where everything from the potatoes themselves to the restaurant's wooden accoutrements can be easily traced back to rural Ontario. Poutini, in other words is not your regular greasy, take-out spot. Conceived by two French Canadian brothers from Sudbury, Fred and Nick Laliberte, the French fry haven, while affordable, offers an environment that would comfortably cater to more than just the spectacular potato dish. Do not picture a fast food dive; every detail in the space, from the streaming natural light, to the wooden table tops, to the Victorian wallpaper feature-wall is as meticulously designed as any eat-in dining establishment in the city. The good news is: the care and attention to detail that goes into the creation of the Poutini's atmosphere also goes into the food. How do I know this as fact, you ask, gentle reader? Answer: Nick and Fred, along with the help of their contractor and uncle, Paulo Martinez, did everything themselves - they even culled the building materials from their farm in Sudbury.
Having recently earned their University degrees, the brothers Laliberte certainly haven't got the pedigree of many restaurateurs in the city, but at the same time, these boys know poutine. The two have spent a lifetime each studying (some might call it eating) the ubiquitous food and felt the market needed the perfect poutine. Fred's French fry theory runs under the notion that all three items need to have a fine balance: the fries must be crisp and with skin; the gravy must be creamy and act as a condiment; but the real secret, is in the curds. Like the snap a hot dog makes when you bite into it, the cheese curd must have a pronounced squeak when you eat it. Uncovering a squeaky cheese (which is a fresh cheese) curd in the city is not simple, so Fred brings in the product from a variety of local farms daily.
Poutine might be an easy item to slap together. But the paradigmatic poutine, now that's a whole different story. In other words, don't expect a large roster of local items. What you will see at Poutini is good old-fashioned poutine. Vegetarians will also have their chance to bite into the much-ballyhooed snack. Poutini offers a vegetarian version of the dish made with roasted vegetable gravy and even a vegan version with soy-based cheese. Although I don't imagine too many health-conscious Torontonians to be prancing into Poutini, the menu also accommodates them by featuring the baked potato poutine.
As long as Atkins stays in, ummm, interment, I have high hopes for this shop. But as for thoughts of expanding, Laliberte, like the potato, doesn't plan to; he likes to stick to his roots. – E.H

16 Reader Reviews | I never really understood why people liked poutine untill I lived in Quebec. Truth is Ontario food joints have been making poutine at a sub-standard level for years and these new quasi-classy dedicated poutine joints designed to capitalize on ignorant drunks have not bothered to raise the standard.
The poorly cooked fries, the insufficient amount of gravy, the disposable bowl and forks, the luke warm temprature, the cheese curds that don't squeak might all be easier to over-look if they just used the right kind of gravy. Beef gravy is absolutely NOT traditional. If it is not made with hot chicken fat it is just not the same and in my opinion not even worth tasting.

Very good, but not worth all the hubbub! I'd rather eat at a non-poutine place, but still very good!

you obviously didn't read my review properly I said "it's LIKE chicken gravy"
like when you go to kfc and get that thick gravy that's kinda grainy.
anyway the fries are awesome and I will go back sometime once i've had enough alcohol to sway my better judgement.

Meh. It was love at first sight, not so much at first bite. I've had better poutine. The other items were just okay- more salty than I would have liked, with no distinct flavor. I expected more for the $$$ we spent.

I didn't like this place at all
the fries were undercooked
there wasnt enough gravy or cheese and the gravy had no flavour .. both of them
i will not be returning here .. nor will any of the 5 or so people with me

Delicious vegetarian gravy, yum, yum, extra yum!! Welcoming friendly staff, and beautiful space. But sadly no vegan cheese. They say they are working on a lactose-free cheese, I do hope it will be vegan, and flavour worthy to be paired with their gravy, that would be amazing. Also be forewarned, only cash payment and no bathrooms up and running yet. Overall a very welcome addition to the neighbourhood.

Montreal peeps will generally be nay-sayers. I would know: I am one. But for Toronto, I must admit, Poutinis is quite good. Surprised me, in fact.

Just a comment regarding Neil's review:
The gravy IS beef gravy and not chicken gravy. They seem to have their own gourmet spin to poutine.
I personally really enjoyed poutinis; the cheese curds actually squeak, the fries are crispy, and the gravy is quite flavorful without being too thick, greasy or salty.

"onceived by two French Canadian brothers from Sudbury"
I asked cause i'm from nothern ontario THEY ARE NOT FROM SUDBURY rather the Ottawa valley get your facts straight.
and the fries are great cheese is good but yeah you could always have more. What pissed me off was the gravey.. it's thick and on par with chicken gravy. Not beef gravy which I was hoping for.
anyway guess I'll have to go back to smokes and try one of their crazy toppings and see if that doesn't turn my crank..
For the record no ones does a poutine in town properly like i've grown up with in northern ontario or had in Quebec.

I have never seen a fast-food joint so beautifully designed. It's warm and inviting, just like the staff.
Too bad about the poutine though. Poutini seems to have put so much attention in the details of everything but their food.
Poutine is supposed to have ample cheese and smothered in salty gravy.
The fries are decent, but this place is not called Fries-i, now is it? For $7 poutini Poutini must put a few more cheese curds (at least twice as much) and add a little salt to the gravy. No wait - add a lot more salt.
This is our national dish people - we need to do it better.
