ince construction started last October, we have all be waiting patiently to see what would finally emerge from that empty space at 747 Queen Street East. When the sign that read "Pic Nic" went up, the plot thickened, as passersby wondered what the future of the space might hold. The wait is over, as the wrapping has been removed from the alluring little space.
Going back to July, Ian Risdon and Nicola Fisher had decided they wanted to start their own little boite. It all came to fruition when they happened upon the location at Queen and Broadview.
Risdon - who graduated with a degree in food and beverage management, and previously a partner at Alice Fazooli's and currently owns another restaurant in The Beaches called Copper Pipe - is clearly a veteran in the restaurant business. When he decided that he wanted to create Pic Nic, he wanted it to be a venue that would stand out from the proverbial crowd.
In order to do this, he stocked his new resto-bar with wines on consignment – rather than what's available on local liquor store shelves – and cheese offerings, which would be equally important. Not just average, run-of-the-mill stuff, but varieties specifically handpicked from throughout Europe and Canada (Quebec has a particularly great selection).
The chef, Daniel Usher, was trained in Italy and his sous-chef is from France; both European cultures influenced Pic Nic's flavour-focused cuisine. "There will only be able five items on the fixed menu, while the rest will be daily specials with seasonal flair," explained Usher.

7 Reader Reviews | I have not been yet, but I am very pleased with the way it looks as I pass it by. I hate the area that it is in...it feels so dirty and unsafe..but I am so excited to try it out. Especially learning about it's concept. Sounds like a real Gem. I wish you well, and hope people get it! So many people dine at such lousy places, this one sounds right on target!
There was a comment made up there about never receiving a "five star experience"...why not? It sounds to me you guys are shooting for that, all the best!
Sincerley,
A local, a food and wine lover, a fellow restaurnateur.

It's kinda all over the place, I can appreciate that. So that's why I keep coming back to Pic Nic, I know I will not ever have a five star experience there but highly doubt to have to give just one star either. It is a very solid middle of the road, two and a half star.

A twist on eating with friends: sharing a platter of unique and high quality meats and cheeses over very reasonably priced wine (with good selection) made the evening fly by. Made the evening a sharing event rather than simply a meal among friends. Despite seemingly small portions, left extremely satisfied - in the experience, the price and the belly.

We went to Pic Nic on Saturday night and had a fantastic time - We sat and ate and drank for over three hours! The food was fantastic and the wine pairings that were suggested went perfectly with our meal! Our waitress, who knew her food and wine was also absolutely delightful. We will definitely be back, sooner rather than later!

I love Pic nic - it's a great spot for many different reasons: affordable food that is fantastic, tasty and reliably good. Great atmosphere (especially if you love to eavesdrop - the tables just cry out for it). I've been here a lot with my boyfriend, and with some girlfriends - we've always had a great time.

Pic Nic is a welcome addition to the neighborhood and our dining repitore. Found the staff extremely friendly, knowledgeable and the atmosphere is top notch. The "platter" menu is a great bang for the buck...can easily be shared or makes a great dinner for one.
