Style and substance converge at Chef John Lee's resurfaced restaurant on Carlton Street, where the unfortunate Town Grill Bistro used to be located. Lee, you may recall, had closed his original Omi near Church & Wellesley last year, and almost immediately went to work on resurfacing the restaurant on Carlton Street. Alas, the summer came and went, and no Omi.
But here it is – with a familiar menu that has gotten a few fresh interpretations, and a modern dining room that appeals to a crowd that's comfortable stopping in for a fish ceviche and nibbles or a full meal.
The homespun country cottage bistro look-and-feel is has been replaced with a hip, architecturally lit space. The clean design comes by way of the rustic dark woods, polished blonde woods and complementary earth tones. A slick sushi bar glistens with tiles of small, rectangular native stone runs the length of the room; tabletops are created with crosscuts of wood, and polished in polymer. The whole effect is understated Asian: hip, cool, and modern.
Carlton and Parliament may not be the sushi capital of the world — that would be Yorkville - but John Lee has successfully aligned food with décor, in this case a bright room with repeating geometrical shapes cleansed into near sterility.
The sushi menu has a full complement of sushi, sashimi, hand rolls, and tempura, with all of the usual suspects well-represented. The Omi sushi selection ($19.95) changes daily, but on this day the plate is composed of spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail and soft shell crab. A crunchy exterior yielded to the succulent core, a nice combination of flavours. The Omi sashimi ($19.95) is a plate of white tuna sushi and jumbo shrimp - which has an interior of crunchy crab, masago roe, cucumber, and sprouts. Both are works of art on the plate and both delicious.

17 Reader Reviews | Cool atmosphere but average food. My husband had sushi ... it was fresh, but there was nothing special about it. The rolls were poorly made as the rice fell apart. I had the halibut and besides the salty seasoning on top, the fish was very bland and overcooked. Other than that, the service was great. They also have a section in the back of their wine list of bottles they have decided not to keep, so we got a really nice bottle of cab for not much over the price you could buy it from the winery. We appreciate good atmosphere and service, but we love good food and this was a disappointment..the wine was great!

For the succinct lowdown, see Gary James'. review. I'll just add that I'm giving the food four stars, but I'm not giving stars for anything else. The nigiri I had was absolutely delicious, and it is in my neighbourhood - so I come here all the time.

Still my favorite sushi place, Omi! John Lee should be an Iron Chef.

Star-worthy: Where to begin? Fresh fish. nice portion sizes. Bottom line: simple elegance that's definitely worth the price.
Not so star-worthy: The room is a bit bland - Not sure what's missing, but feels like a 7-11.

Omi is DEFINITELY the best sushi place I have ever been to and I think I won't ever go to a better place, because I found the best place already. The chef John Lee is extremely friendly and outgoing and it's really a lot of fun chatting with him. I think he is the COOLEST chef I have ever met!

one taste of the John Lee's sushi here and you'll understand what the fuzz is all about. authentic sushi and amazingly fresh sashimi will leave you coming back for more. Cozy spot and most importantly the food makes this place well worth the price.

Loved, loved, loved the shrimp tempura avocado rolls. Went back a 2nd time and opted for the basic "chicken and rice".. totally disappointing (and I'm difficult to dissapoint). Waited a very long time for my lukewarm, chewy chicken in an uninspiring sauce to arrive. Even the rice wasn't hot. Should have just got the rolls.

Last month I read a Vanity Fair article about the sushi market in japan; the writer eventually takes us on a sushi adventure starting in downtown Tokyo and ending up in New York City. I can say by the end of the article i was so craving the ideal sushi experience; one where I'm served small portions of tender, delicious, high quality fish that the chef has deemed today's 'special.'
That happened to me last night at OMI. and here i was waiting for nozawa.I left satisfied, but now i want to go back and relive my lunch experience again.
Maybe I died and went to heaven and haven't figured it out yet.

You can't beat the value offered by Omi - fresh sashimi on the Omi sashimi 19.95 platter especially the tuna lovely chunky pieces however for a place which prides itself on real sashimi we were dissappointed to find crab sticks mingling amongst quality pieces of real fish - please forget the faux crab already - the blow torched scallops were perfectly plum on the inside and just charred not burnt on the outside - most shocking though was the sound of a microwave ding from the kitchen only to find out later that whatever was dinging was actually headed to our table the rubbery morsels of yakitori chicken with bottled teriyaki sauce however we were relieved when the excellent attentive maître d spotted this, apologised and took it off the bill without a fuss.

This is TOP-NOTCH SUSHI! Prices are very reasonable and the service is great and nice wait staff. The sushi is fresh and the best quality from any other place we've been. The best place to sit is at the bar near the owner (John). He is funny, entertaining, and makes the most amazing, creative sushi rolls.
It's a friendly neighbourhood atmosphere and there is nothing pretentious about.

Our dining experience at Omi was unforgettable. Every dish was unique and John's suggestions were amazing. Thumbs up to John as one of the top chefs. Definitely coming back!

John's sushi rolls are to die for. And the place is relatively expensive though. I heard the hype, but I can see why..pretty good space (and I was a fan of the old location).

Fab food + fab service. Elegant atmosphere, but not stuffy. I had John's sushi menu, and it was $$$! but it was worth it. Also, I shamelessly gobbled up the steamed rice that they kept bringing around.

I may be biased for reasons only known to me and a select few, but this new spot is GREAT. Great sushi, great service, great atmosphere, great price. I could go on, but I think you get the picture.
