N ota Bene, or for short hand, NB ("Note Well" in English), is a notation that most people pretend to know the meaning of, but in actuality, it signifies the reader to take note of an important point to be made. Nota Bene, the newest venture by Splendido owners David Lee and Yannick Bigourdan, and Toronto restaurateur Franco Prevedello, is striving for the same effect.
From the outset, the restaurant's sleek flat façade, carved out of the new Canada Life building, is a slick mix of dark and light woods, blended with stone and neon green accents. It all adds a bit of luster to an area that was otherwise left to the squeegee kids down the street, a Condom Shop and a neighbouring tattoo parlor.
This is a Queen West-ified Splendido: precision service, high quality ingredients, but with a much more laid back, edgy, and relaxed atmosphere. In collaboration with high profile architectural firm KPMB, the three owners conceptualized the space, right down to the fabrics used. The result is a high ceiling-ed room, with lower level bar, and private dining area. The majority of the space is decked in blond and dark wood, chocolate coloured seating, and white table cloths accented by colourful abstract art covering many of the walls.
Splendido is a widely successful destination spot, but sometimes, the average diner wants nothing more to do than just unwind a bit. So it's no surprise that the newest venture for Lee and Bigourdan is a much lower key affair. The team stole Sous-Chef Geoff O'Connor and Manager Cameron Dryburgh (who is happy not to be coordinating three-hour, eight course meals) for the new place. Make no mistake; this is still a very well executed affair. With Chef Lee running the show, the menu is more accessible, and features gourmet takes on comfort food classics.
For now, the chef is separating his time equally between his two restaurants, often spending afternoons at Nota Bene, and evenings at Splendido; "You can never love one child more than another; and each has their own qualities," says Lee. The menu is thoughtfully planned out; smaller dishes are divided between soups, salads, and raw proteins, while mains are heavy on red meat and fish, and includes an exclusively steak section, (which doesn't include the hangar steak and short ribs listed under entrees). Vegetarians consider yourself warned.

The service, ambience and food were wonderful. We had 2 waiters making sure that our party was not left unattended. The wine stewart's Canadian wine suggestions were spot on. The 33 1/2 ounce Rib Steak shared between 2 was to die for and the lobster salad was scrumptious. Steak tartare was raved about by several in our party. We would highly recommend it, it was an all around great evening!!!

I have had a dinner at Nota Bene each time I've been to Toronto over the last twelve months, every single one has been superb,
Congratulations to David and Yannick for a job well done.
Keep-up the good work.
Love the pigglet tart with boudin noir as well as the rich bread and butter pudding.
I sure shall be back next month.
Cheers.

My grand daughter is taking culinary and wants to be a chef, She read about "Nota Bene" and wanted to try it and hoped to meet chef David Lee. I called the evening before our visit for a reservation for 2, Lori, the hostess that answered said it would be difficult, being a Saturday evening, but after I explained to her that my GD wanted so much to dine there, she gave us a reservation for 5:30, She asked what was my GD name I told her, She was very nice and obliging on the phone. It is Saturday, 5:25 arriving at the restaurant, we were greeted by Lori and others, with big smiles. We were seated in a smaller room, feeling closed in, I requested another seat, no problem, by the window in the front, it was wonderful, Within minutes, Chef David Lee arrived at our table, what a treat, The communication between Lori and him and probably other staff members is what makes a great restaurant, During our dining he came to our table 3x's and after dessert invited her to see the kitchen, where a picture was taken with her and David, What a great added experience besides the service, wait staff, and the food. We have travelled quite a bit and this was one of our best culinary experiences. Best of luck to David and his staff

Just returned from dins at Nota Bene. Service was excellent. The atmosphere however is frenzied. The venue is lovely to look at, but isn't so lovely for a truly relaxed, enjoyable meal. Seemed more of a place for wannabies to congregate and chat - at high decibels. The food is geared for meatlovers or raw vegetarians. Gaviscon never had such an appeal.

Atmosphere = very warm/comfortable
Food = Over priced in the sense that the taste of the food is not anything amazing. If you go with a group of friends, the atmosphere(+alchohol?) will easily make up for the taste. Going there in hopes of a tasty meal? - You'll be easily disatisfied.
Service = The staff were very friendly/prompt

It is a five star restauratn, but the lunch sucks, so 3 stars only . I have an ivestment company and if I buy lunch for client I go here . No one ever complains about the space. And a fair price as well.

I took my company here and we had an absolutely terrible experience. It was our first year in business and we were excited to celebrate a great 1st year. Unfortunately, from start to finish we had a terrible experience. The food took over 2 hours to arrive, at which point half the firm had to get going, and the staff was completely unapologetic for the delay. They didn't even comp the meals from our bill...even though nobody was there to eat them. I found the staff to be pompous and rude and I would NEVER go back.

I was here for a business lunch and was impressed. But keep in mind, we had a private area and the wine was free-flowing, and at no cost to me. The atmosphere, service and presentation were spectacular and the food was so, so good.

This place was pretty amazing. Innovative, delicious, great presentation and wine pairings from beginning to end. It's crazy expensive but I'm glad that my ex-old man paid for it.

I finally made it here. If you want serious quality food - this is one of the few places in Toronto that really delivers. The space is large and a bit busy, but it's fun and the the service is very good and fast. Best of all, the prices are very reasonable and you get a lot of food.
Warning - make reservations. The place is popular and busy!

I absolutely love the creativity of the chef. After dining at many "high-end" restaurants in Toronto, this is one restaurant that wowed me. Be sure to check out their wine list cause their selection is just HUGE.

An excellent choice for a quiet romantic dinner, except on a busy weekend night.

We debated between a 3.5 and 4 stars but decided to round up in this case because everything we tried was good. Some dishes are better than others and give your taste buds a bit more of a "wow!" I've reserved my comments only for the items that were most memorable.
The most pleasantly surprising dish was the Nova Scotia Lobster Club. It was lightly battered and very tender. Not the rubbery, greasy and overly breaded stuff you get most places.
The shaking beef was good and cooked perfectly, as was the cumin duck. The sea bass was also a big hit.
In general, a very nice restaurant to try out

Strange location. Too expensive. But... I liked it a lot. Dinner for 4 on Saturday night was a hit, with every dish surprisingly great! Shall return.

My partner and I really like to eat out, a lot. That's what we spend our dough on, and so we were really looking forward to trying Nota Bene, in light of the pedigree of the owners and the press of late. We popped in to give it a try for lunch this past Monday, September 8th. The space itself is quite lovely, open and clearly high end everything from stemware to chairs to the walls and floors. We liked it, although I agree with the Toronto Life dude: not romantic. The food at lunch was quite lovely: I had the veggie pasta with peas and my partner had the burger and fries: the presentation was correct, the value was right on, and the tastes were spot on. I have to cry out, though: the service was really bad. The back up staff was completely fine (water, bread, the service of the food, etc, but the main guy who greeted us (set us both on edge from the bat) and took our orders and had overall coverage of us was really bad: it took quite a long time for our order to be taken; we were abandoned for long chunks of time; the water glasses were not refilled; and no one asked us if we wanted another glass of wine. No one asked us if our meal was ok. Our empty plates sat in front of us for an unusually long time. The dessert menus took forever to arrive. We had to hunt down the waiter to get our bill. This distinct lack of decent service has really thrown a wrench into my enjoyment of the place. I imagine that this is something that can be worked out. I am going to try it again for dinner next week, with a client. If the service is still poor, I won't go back. There are too many other fantastic places to eat in To.

Cocktails and appetizers were good, but what really blew our minds away were the entrees. Incredible lamb, and the most amazing olive-oil poached salmon we ever tasted. My girlfriend's from Vancouver and she grew up with amazing salmon so that opinion counts. We'll be back.

Had dinner here last week with 3 friends and had a great time. The staff was outstanding. They were helpful, intelligent, patient plus they actually listened to us and responded quickly to our needs.
The food was great, I had the Steak special, which seemed to be the favourite choice at our table. This was our first time there and will not be the last.

I've been here twice, and twice have I had a great memorable experience. This place lives up to every hype you have read and can think of about it. The ambiance is excellent, the service is excellent, the food is excellent, what more is there to say about this place? If I HAD to complain and nit-pick about something, we had to wait for our table to be ready. There, something negative about Nota Bene.
