The transformation of West Queen West into an eclectic neighbourhood is occurring at a rapid pace, and Mother India hopes to kick that pace up a notch with its own insignia. Restaurateur Avtar Singh (Gandhi Restaurant at Queen and Bathurst) has opened his newly renovated jewel in mid June, offering up ample seating and serving Northern Indian Thali fare - rice, dal, vegetables, chapatti, papad and curd.

Replacing the long-running and established Northway Restaurant, Mother India offers a blooming array of tastes for the adventurous. Promising authentic edibles of the region, this 56 seater will definitely fit the area - T.M.

Mother India has switched to what Ghandi's does best: East Indian style Roti. The menu (and prices) are now identical to that of Ghandi, and I'm happy to say that the food tastes pretty good too. I haven't done an a/b comparison of the two, but the butter chicken roti I had last night was pretty yummy.

Unfortunately Mother India doesn't follow in the footsteps of Avtar Singh's fantastic Gandi Restaurant. There is no Roti here for one. The same dishes are served but are a la carte instead. Saag Paneer is just that, spinach and paneer cheese, and at $9.95 is $2.00 more than a same sized Saag Paneer Roti at Gandhi but includes potato and is wrapped in a wonderful house made roti. Why pay more for less? I imagine rent at Queen and Lansdowne is considerably less than at Queen and Bathurst so I don't know the answer to that. Most damning of all is the chef is just simply better at Gandhi than at Mother India. The food lacks the same level of flavor that made Gandhi to-die-for. The food looks and smells the same - it just doesn't taste it. After frequenting Gandhi regularly for the last couple years it's more than a little disappointing to have a favorite restaurant open a location in your neighborhood only to find that's it's overpriced and inferior to it's predecessor.
So for now I'll continue to hop on my bicycle and ride to Gandhi instead, keeping an eye on my rear view mirror waiting for roti to appear on the menu and for the chef to settle in.
