Toronto is not the best city for Mexican food, which is a shame because I love Mexican food. Lately, though, there has been a burrito explosion. Led by Burrito Boyz and later joined by places like Big Fat Burrito in Kensington Market, the burrito has become a quick and portable food for Torontonians to enjoy. Mission Burrito has now thrown its name into the burrito pool.
With a prime location in Village by the Grange across the street from OCAD and only steps away from the AGO, the storefront will serve hungry students and tourists alike. While the little restaurant will follow the takeout formula, there is a noticeable departure in the style of burrito.
Mission Burrito proudly claims to be the first spot in Toronto to serve, fittingly enough, mission-style burritos. Originating in San Francisco, this method involves steaming the burritos rather than toasting them. This may not sound like a huge innovation, but San Franciscans swear by it. Like pizza in Chicago, the burrito has developed its own style in the area. For the first time, Torontonians are now able to try it for themselves. The store uses entirely fresh and seasonal ingredients and also serve soft-shell tacos and salads. I'm already getting hungry.
