The germ of an idea that would cultivate into the business model for Milagro Restaurante Mexicano Y Cantina sprouted not in a boardroom stuffed with investors but on the beaches of Mexico. Brothers Arturo and Andrés Anhalt had wanted to start their own restaurant and they aspired to bring the authentic Mexican flavours to Toronto. Since both brothers had worked in T.O. in unrelated fields, they had this gut feeling that the restaurant would be a success.
That day on the beach, Arturo and Andrés and their wives agreed to move their already busy lives to Canada. Armed with a business plan, the brothers and their wives made the move. The entire process would take time, however, so Arturo and Andrés continued with other Toronto-based jobs (Andrés would eventually get fired from Terroni) while they scouted for a restaurant location, interior design firm and, finally, staff.
That location would be a space in the Jefferson building on Mercer Street, freshly liberated from the short-lived Monte Cristo. After lusting over the wickedly-designed Drake Hotel, the brothers sought out the design firm responsible for the ambitious reno: 3rd Uncle Design Inc.
There was never a need to head-hunt for a manager; after reading Jennifer Bain's glowing exposé of the soon-to-open restaurant in the Toronto Star, David Minicucci (Nectar) was instantly at the (under-construction) door. "He simply walks in," says Arturo, "and says 'I'm going to work for you.' It was no more complicated than that. At that point, everything else fell into place."
Fast forward six months: Milagro Restaurante opens their well-designed doors to offer a hip version of Mexican flavours with all elements in check.

Milagro is good - you won't go wrong. Specials are very good!! The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the guacamole which had something in it I couldn't identify - maybe it was their salsa which was green and not great. They should go with a pico de gallo they make in-house.

The night was fairly good. We went because of the opening, and it was more than we expected. Our waiter was excellent. Very helpful, informative and accommodating. We dine in this area more than occasionally but not regularly and are almost always satisfied but this experience was above and beyond the norm. Very pleased with the experience.

I ate here back in the spring and a friend has requested we meet there for dinner at the end of next month. I'll have to take a pass. I found the entire dining experience poor, at best...most memorable part was my margarita, which isn't saying much. Some of the dishes were "good", but I found most of the dipping sauces tasted "off", or just off-putting. The service was terrible, with at least three different servers, none of which could keep track of what we ordered or didn't order. The wrong dishes arrived at our table, and we had to wait for ages for both our drinks, and then for the food. I found one of the owners incredibly rude and want to warn North Torontonians - you don't want to give this guy your dough for what you get. Overpriced and over-hyped.

I have eaten twice at the downtown Milagro and once at Yonge/Lawrence. My wife and I were thrilled that they opened the one near our house. Tonight we are going to take-out from Yonge/Lawrence.
We have only had excellent meals at Milagro. We were attracted to it because it provides authentic, upscale Mexican food and not the standard fare tacos&burritos. For standard fare we go to Rebozo's on Rogers Rd. or Tacos El Asador on Bloor (which is actually El Salvadoran).
The food at Milagro was great each time. My second trip downtown I took some business colleagues who also enjoyed it immensely. The Tamarind Marguerita is delicious. The food overall has been wonderful, we have ordered different things each time.
Looking forward to my meal tonight.

If you read closely, 'Bruce' and 'Luke' is the owner! Too funny! I love this stuff. Both posts comment on previous posts, but they mention the incorrect author! Seems like someone can't navigate this site properly!

I had a very pleasant experience at Milagro (the new one at Yonge/Lawrence). I would highly recommend it. I have to ask of Liza Bergman - why on earth would you go to a Mexican restaurant and order a steak? Any time you go to a restaurant, order the house specialty. Don't order a steak at Pizza Hut; don't order a pizza at the Keg.
I think that the reason so many people are disappointed in Milagro is because they expect Tex-Mex. Take the advice of the servers and managers when ordering at a restaurant (or cuisine) that is new to you. For those who want the same dish no matter the venue, you are better suited to a mall food court. I will be back to Milagro tomorrow for margarita Tuesday!

Just wanted to clarify and ridicule the lovely and informative post from Ruben Stilton’s.
Food poisoning is not something that happens right after eating spoiled food; it takes almost 48 hours to your system to actually feel the effects of tainted food. It doesn’t take much to Google my tummy hurts or read up on food poisoning.
Thankfully we (i mean us who speak the language and have the wonderful opportunity to live in a civilized country) live in a city that has a great system in place to keep restaurants from serving food unfit for consumption; I have in the past contacted health officials with concerns after eating at certain establishments and the responses has always been standard. I won’t post it here but go ahead Ruben, call the health department or your doctor. Before you go out there and post something as ridiculous and what you just did; don’t forget that there are always the fans that will often stand up for who they believe in.
Keep up the great work guys, cant wait to have another free evening (and good hangover morning) to come in and enjoy some tequila and spicy shrimp tacos!

I'm an avid Milagro fan, love the place, the food and the service... I just came back from their new uptown restaurant on Yonge just north of Lawrence (what used to be Herbs). The place looks great, its cozy and comfortable, the menu looks pretty much the same although I saw they have barbacoa in the new one... the food is as good as downtown, and notwithstanding it just opened doors a couple of days ago, the dining room was full and service was impeccable. I still like the downtown restaurant better with its Mexican style arches and larger room size, but the drive uptown was definitely worth our while. Congrats to the folks behind Milagro... you really got cojones to open up a new restaurant during this terrible crisis... Felicidades, keep up the good work!

12. Liza Bergman's Review :: March 10, 2009 Liza Bergman's Rating: 1 Stars |
Milagro was the worst restaurant I have ate at in my entire life. I had ordered the steak, which was supposed to be cooked medium rare and they basically gave it to me raw "I sent it back to be cooked again" and it tasted like a very low quality steak. It came on the side with rice that was very dry, refried beans that were overcooked, and a soft taco with a small piece of chicken inside that was drenched in a very bad tasting sauce. My girlfriend ordered the chicken, she took one bite of it and that was enough.
The menu was overpriced and the service was alright. I ususally do not write reviews about restaurants, but Milagro was so terrible I needed to warn people not to waste their money, I was very reluctant to pay for my meal but I paid for it out of pity.I would not reccomend this restaurant to anyone, and judging by alot of the other reviews, many people feel the same about Milagro.

Great food & drink, friendly service & nicely decorated... Congrats to the staff, we had a great evening. Prices are in the mid to high range but you get value and quality for your money. Would definately recommend. Will be back as soon as I am back in Toronto. Keep it up Milagro!

Myself and 3 friends ate at Milagro on a Saturday night. The restaurant was nearly empty. The service was slow, and not friendly at all.
We ordered 2 bottles of wine, so I cannot comment on the cocktails. The menu did seem over priced. We ordered the guacamole, and I would have to agree with other reviewers that it was bland and boring. The Ceviche Tropical was excellent as well was the mole sauce on the enchiladas. The fish was a bit too salty.
If you are planning to eat at Milagro, I would suggest ordering plates for sharing, that way a disappointing dish or two will not ruin the evening.

Hi Everyone,
As a person of mexican heritage I felt that the experience at Milagro was that of being in a restaurant in Mexico. My husband and I enjoyed the taquitos and ceviche as appetizers along with the mole for dinner. It was very tasty and we will definitely be returning soon to enjoy other items on the menu. The staff was very helpful and efficient. I suggest all readers to go on Wednesday nights to enjoy the mariachis as they were the ones who performed at our wedding cocktail hour and were fabulous. VIVA MEXICO! Enjoy the TRUE MEXICAN experience.... no texmex here!!!

If you are looking for great authentic food and some of the best cocktails I've had in years, visit this truly charming Mexican cantina. Service is friendly , atmosphere is warm and the food is genuine (no Tex Mex here), fresh, abundant and terrific. The menu has lots of botanas (appetizers) and seafood cocktails called ceviches. We shared all of our meal including mains. Do not expect modern cuisine, Milagro dishes only traditional & rustic. Spice level is quite manageable (ask for spicier, they'll kick it upa notch) and desserts are to die for (Truffa de Chocolate Maya). I highly recommend this place if you enjoy classic cuisine and personalized service. People looking for burritos, nachos and fajitas beware, none are served here; still you will be pleasantly surprised!
17. Very Pleased's Review :: March 12, 2008 Very Pleased's Rating: 4 Stars |
My husband and I went to Milagro this evening and experienced the most disappointing, flavourless meal of our lives. Although the service was exemplary, the food -all of the food- lacked something. We started with the tortillas and guacamole which both lacked any kind of remarkable flavour. It was like dipping oily drywall into mashed avocado. From there we had a Caesar salad and soup. The salad was on a teeny tiny plate and the romaine leaves were whole and stacked, making it impossible to cut on the small plate. This was all topped with one crouton. The tomato soup was a warm gaspacho with no spices added, so essentially, whizzed up tomatoes and onions.
Finally, the entrees arrived. My husband had the beef ($28.50!?!) which was so tough it was nearly impossible to cut with the provided cutlery. The beef was stringy and a very low quality cut of striploin. I had the enchiladas which tasted like gym socks. It consisted of a previously frozen chicken breast wrapped in soggy tortilla with a flavourless tomatillo sauce on top.
This meal bordered on not only disappointing, but slightly gross and stomach turning.
We will not be returning.
Save your money and go to Chi Chis.

I had noticed Milagro from the many times passing by the restuarant, sparked my curiousity as to fine mexican dining. From the outside it looks very upscale and dressy, but when I had actually planned a dinner with a few friends there upon arriving I was very surprised at the way it looked inside. Nice but alittle too jack astor's...LOL! I first felt way too over dressed as did the rest of my group, but we figured "hey the food should be great".
We started to look threw the menu, and unsure of some of the items obviously we were going to ask for help on what to order and how much is in the portions. So I had asked for some help, when the response of the waiter is the same god damn thing the the menu says and has basically no clue how to explain what is in the food or how much comes, it was not a good sign. I had a feeling that we were in for a bad experience....
Overall the waiter was polite but had no fucking clue what he was talking about... The ladies ordered martinis and they came in tall glasses that I drink my orange juice out of in the morning when I get up... And when they had asked him if he brought the wrong drinks he said thats how they came... which was totally unappealling for two grown women to be drinking their martinis out of a children's glass... Then when we had asked for the drink menu from one of the 3 servers we had serving our table she walked by our table 9 times and totally forgot to bring the menu...
When I had asked her agian she had gave me a smug look and said "ya i'm busy" then walked away... I had got up myself and walked over to get the menu's myslef...
Overall the service was horrible and the wait for food was very very long... and was not worth the wait either... you can find better mexican food at Hernando's Hideaway... The Taco's suck! they come rolled up in a hard shell and have sliced lettuce under it with sour cream splattered across it... was not impressed at all... the ceviche was good and the margarita's were good...
I wouldn't waste my time eating there... The servers are pretty rude and uneducated in the menu of the restuarant... which they should know all about.
I don't recomend this place to anyone... and would never go back... Rather spend my money elsewhere.

Oh guys, it's so funny when you start criticizing Mexican restaurants when you don't even have an idea of what authentic Mexican food is. I'm originally from Mexico, I've also been to the restaurant and felt very angry when I read the last couple of submitted reviews. First of all, if they didn't ask you how you wanted your margarita is because that is the way they are served nowadays in fine dining restaurants in Mexico; second, enchiladas are not meant to burn your mouth or be spicy as hell, they are almost non spicy at all. Talking about these guys going back to school, let me tell you that they know more about REAL Mexican food than any renowned Canadian chef that thinks that mole is the same as chocolate, that we eat chimichangas and that tacos are hard shell tortillas stuffed with ground beef, sour cream and lettuce. Talking about their English, I'm sure that at least their English is WAY better than your Spanish and just the same way you're asking them to learn English I'll invite all of you to start learning the correct pronunciation for all our dishes: it's tamal and not tamale; enchiladaSSS and not enchiladA and we can go on with a long list. I invite you to move to Mexico City and open a fine dining Canadian restaurant (if there's such thing as Canadian food), be able to speak Spanish as fluent as these guys speak English and then you can criticize everything you want. It's right that the prices are high but come on, it's a fine dining restaurant! I'm sure you wouldn't be complaining if it was Italian or French.

We made a reservation and were scolded for being late, however we were 5 minutes early. Our table and server treated us with as though we had screwed up their night and made us wait 10 minutes before receiving menus or ordering drinks. We had the house margarita, were not asked how we'd like them (on the rocks, of course) and they came blended and weak. The botanas were fairly good (shrimp ceviche and a cheese fondue) but the mains were poor. The enchiladas were not spicy, the chicken tacos lacked flavour and the re-fried beans were overdone.
The menu's prices are likely a result of the high rent and large dining room. Too bad! We will not return.

It so so unbelievably awful I was angry. I'm normally not the type to complain, but I told them I wouldn't eat it or pay for it because it was just so low quality and terrible. My family said their meals were okay at best. Terrible, terrible joint.
bad place to eat the owners need to go back to school and learn to cook while at it
learn some english.

After reading all the wild and amusingly opposite postings on Milagro, my wife and I decided to try it out last night; we both love going out to restaurants and have visited most of the elite restaurants in the city. This is our take:
We arrived at 8:45pm. Although it was Tuesday night the place was packed. We were greeted by a tall European looking man who seemed to be the manager. He told us that they were very busy and had a short waiting list, we could sit at the bar and wait no more than 15 minutes for a table. We decided to stay (concerned because the place was very busy), since everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves. The bar was also busy, we were offered a cocktail list with a great selection of sangrias, margaritas and mojitos. The bartender recommended the classic margarita and a rose wine and watermelon sangria.... both were outstanding. It is the best (and maybe the largest) margarita I have ever tried, the balance of tequila, lime and triple sec was perfect! My wife’s sangria was quite original and very tasty.
After 25 minutes we were sat. The room was buzzing with activity, we were approached immediately by our server Ana Maria, who handed us the dinner menu, she explained a little bit about the style of foods offered. She suggested starting with guacamole, we accepted. She told us would be right back to make some suggestions. They brought over the guacamole quite fast, with fresh tomato salsa and tortilla chips on the side. Guacamole was delicious, fresh and limey, the salsa spicy and very fresh (highly addictive), the chips not the ordinary nacho chips but actual fried corn tortillas, this really makes a difference. The manager approached us and asked if he could make some suggestions. He explained that Milagro serves classic Mexican food, using chiles for flavor more than heat. He suggested we try the octopus ceviche (lime marinated seafood cocktails?) and the different tacos served as botanas (appetizers). He seemed convincing so we decided to let him order for us. We were brought the ceviche and adobo shrimp tacos. The ceviche was amazing, I could not believe it was actually octopus, so tender and mild and seasoned with lime and chipotle with what I guess were green tomatoes. The shrimp tacos, prepared with an interesting red colored sauce that tasted of clove, chiles and spices are served with fresh pineapple chunks and cilantro on open corn tortillas; they are the perfect finger food, my wife and I loved them.. definitely coming back for more!
We called on the manager to help us out with the entree selection, although he was very busy he again took the time to help us. He suggested a glass Rioja wine and to continue sharing more plates recommending the pork carnitas, red snapper with adobo crust and mole enchiladas (tortillas rolled and stuffed with chicken). The first dish was the carnitas, pulled pork (I assume slowly roasted) and served with tortillas on the side to make tacos, it was extraordinary, served with a bit of salsa prepared with beer called 'borracha'.... then came the mole enchiladas and the fish. I am no expert in mole (a dark rich sauce prepared with chiles, chocolate and peanuts) but we really enjoyed it. Finally the red snapper 'a la talla', a filet covered in what seemed like a chile paste and served with Mexican rice; it was perfectly cooked, flakey, not too spicy, not dry and bursting with flavours. We literally licked the plates clean. Te wine was a surprisingly good pairing to all of the foods. We constantly approached by our server and the manager, who seemed to be keeping an eye on every table.
The dessert menu was brought to us, and although stuffed, we decided to follow the advice once again and ordered the ‘natilla’ a goats milk caramel creme brulee-like dessert. With an intense caramel flavour you just can't stop eating it, we absolutely loved it!
We left the restaurant at around 10:30 (it was still quite full) satisfied with one of the best dining experiences we have had in a very, very long time and craving to try more drinks and dishes. Milagro is by no means as cheap as other Mexican restaurants in town, I do not think it is the intention, and thank god for that, for their food, ambiance and service are very well worth the $100.00+ we spent. Higher end and more expensive restaurants should look at Milagro's level of service and quality of foods and learn a few things here and there.
After the last night's experience I can only say that it sounds as if the previous and horrid reviews posted in this sight sound more like disgruntled ex-employees lashings. Food sights and blogs should take better care of the posted reviewss, as they can be very destructive and based on our experience, sometimes completely incoherent.

I am also confused.... Jenne clearly has not been out alot... A Chocolate Molten is a staple in MANY Toronto restaurants. It is extremely good but you can get a better one from Sara Lee than this place...LOL....anyhow.. (Sorry for the offense Jenne) In response to Justin and the banter back and forth... I apologize but I feel that a restaurant with there noses so high in the air and the food so down in the gutter...(this mess would not be served on a cart in Mexico!!!) needs to be put in there place... I am sad that Torontonians put there trust in a place because they TRY and be high end....So WHAT if they were designed by 3rd Uncle, so what if they are located in a good spot, so what if they are the FIRST "supposed" high end Mexican place....the fact remains that the chef is NOT a chef...he was fired from Terroni....the "sous" chef couldn't cook his way out of a tostada shell.... and it's an overall mess...Moving on....FINALLY THIS TIME!! (Unless someone says something bad!)....LOL

I must say, I'm not sure what's up with all the poor reviews about Milagro on this site. Having had the chance to go twice (first time recommended by my cousin and the second on mine), I found both experiences to be filled with great food, service and good times.
The food was very palatable, a bit on the salty side but still very good. The seared tuna is a must. It literally melts in your mouth. The cerviches are yummy and bursting with lime and the guacamole is one of the best I've ever had. The only comment there would be that we had asked for the guac without cilantro (for a friend who doesn't eat cilantro) and the waiter said it wouldn't be a problem and then we ended up with guac with cilantro in it. We didn't actually make anything of it though and he actually liked it anyway.
The highlight of my time at Milagros is the dark chocolate truffle cake that they bake for you at time of order. Wow! The mixture of subtle sweetness with the rich, bitter chocolate was incredible. I'd go back just for this!
The second time I ate there, it started out as a reservation of 15 people but then slowly started growing as more friends arrived to about 25 people (this is the reason you need to RSVP!). As a few people kept straggling in, the service staff were surprisingly accomodating and added some more tables on the ends to allowing for seating space. We ended up having one lo-ong table essentially splitting the restaurant in half and the staff was great! I worried that they might not be so accomodating, but I was wrong and they maintained their friendliness throughout the night.
It does get a bit chilly in there especially in the washroom; it seems the room temperature is kept slightly on the cool side so have a light cardigan/sweater handy. All in all, I have good comments about this restaurant and would have no worries dining there again. In fact, after our large party dinner there, my friends had nothing but great comments about the place. Just thought I'd share my experiences!

Wow, so many comments.... Well, I have visited Milagro many times, all I can say is it has great food (abundant, colorful, flavourful), excellent service (friendly, knowledgable, efficient) and definitely the best margarita in town! It is always busy, the atmosphere is lively and everybody always seems to be having a good time. What more to ask... I highly recommend it!

We all know this place sucks...so just leave it be already!
P.S. If you own or manage a restaurant, DO NOT openly leave posts on websites like this...it only makes you look severely amateaur and desperate. C'mon, use your heads guys!

I have enjoyed Milagro twice. It is what it is meant to be: a dressed up pub. I don't see the pretense to be Frontera Grill or a fine dinning restaurant. It would be unfair to judge it in that light.
If you have ever been in a real mexican cantina you would understand the 'dressing-up' attempt. I, for one, am thankful. Bringing a date to a real cantina is a litmus test, to Milagro its a treat -even fun.
Service was good as far as I could tell (and I've been a server for 10 years). My server had perfect timing, and knew the menu, the ingredients and how were they prepared.
As far as the goods:
Drinks were good, and if you want to have rare tequilas, they will be happy to help you.
The food was quite good, homey. The tortilla soup was astounding, I've never had a tortilla soup that good, either here or in Mexico. Tacos were well made-up, the tuna ceviche works well, and I especially enjoyed the fish with serrano peppers (arturo fillet?). Kudos for the pulled pork pibil.
All in all, a good experience I think. It's not the Avalon of Mexican food, nor is meant to be. I would be back for a date, for homely food and maybe a few drinks pre/post theatre/club. I'm definitely looking foward to the patio opening. Oh, and complimentary dominoes after dinner or lunch would be awesome.

I am sorry you did not have a pleasurable experience at Milagro. I can only wish my sincere apology if the service was not up to standards . I whole heartedly agree that the restaurant heating system did struggle a few times during the latest cold spell . I am sad that it caused discomfort or an unpleasant experience.
I can only extend an invitation for you and your guest to perhaps take a leap of faith and hopefully sometime in the future give us another try . We do not want to be perceived as snobbish . We just want people to have an authentic Mexican meal with fantastic service.

I find it fascinating that the comment posted by Mr. Andres is directed to two different reviews yet his is combined. I did not claim to be a "mexican-food expert"...just a person who enjoys good service, food and quality of which your restaurant has none of...
As far as your comment, "Restaurants are not there to make you have a good time, if you go with the idea of critiquing of course all efforts to insure a good time will be in vain." does not make any sense at all... of course we went out to have a good time (WHY ON EARTH would we choose to go to a restaurant or ANYPLACE to have a BAD time??), unfortunately your restaurant does not wish to provide that. In an area of well-established, quality places to eat I don't think you have the background nor the experience to be so snobbish...
I guess you have to learn the hard way. I still stand by my "opinion" that the food was horrible and service needed HELP as well as the restaurant was freezing cold.
As far as your comments regarding the margarita, I can go to MUCH nicer places with MUCH nicer food and be happy to pay that price, mind you they would not charge that price because they do not need the money so desperately. The proof, as they say, is in the "tostada" and trust me it was NOT fun to eat...
30. Interesting Point's Review :: March 19, 2007 Interesting Point's Rating: 1 Stars |
First of all: It was not my intention to ridicule or mock the person’s grammar. Merely to assure that the message was clear. And to correct any misconceptions or stereotypes that might arise. For I have experienced most misconceptions and stereotypes and have seen my parents dealing with them. I can only wish to see the improvement of the misperceptions that most people have when it comes to Spanish speaking people.
I only wished to improve on the comment.
But since the opinions of so called Mexican food experts seem to be more vicious; I will not waste further breath on critiquing an opinion. But I can only hope that readers will be able to see true and honest opinions that reflect that they enjoyed the restaurant. Restaurants are not there to make you have a good time, if you go with the idea of critiquing of course all efforts to insure a good time will be in vain.
For less than miraculous Opinion; tostadas are meant to crumble, it’s a fun dish
Margaritas that are made with premium liquor should be priced accordingly .If you cant afford it don’t ask for it .

Just a note... Your grammar is just as bad as his. Considering you are of Mexican origin as well as he you would think you might have some empathy for his translation errors. Your typing and punctuation was incorrect if you are going to be that picky. The message was very clear that he enjoyed your restaurant. I think you should be more concerned with the quality of the food and the running of your restaurant than the grammar and vocabulary of an obviously satisfied customer. Clearly he needs to get out more is the problem.

I decided to go to Milagro with two friends of mine and enjoy some authentic Mexican cooking... Unfortunately our experience was horrible... The restaurant is very lovely of course being designed by 3rd Uncle but we could not get past the fact that it was below zero and VERY uncomfortable (temperature-wise). We opted to keep our coats on and proceeded to our table. Our server came over quite promptly to acknowledge us but then left us for a good 15 minutes before seeing them again.
We ordered Margaritas (Pomegranate) which were excellent but hardly worth the $13 they charged us. My friend wanted a different tequila in his drink and it seemed like it was very confusing.... the owner/manager/bartender and server all were trying to figure out what to charge and making it a little embarrassing for my friend as they were not hush hush about it...Tacky... it ended up that they were going to charge $25 for the Marg. OUTRAGEOUS!! Thanks very much but we'll go to Mexico and drink it on a beach for that price...
We ended up ordering the Chicken Tinga, the Ribeye Tacos and the Crab Tostadas to start. I should have listened to my gut because after those ridiculous excuses for food we should have left. The chicken was soggy and flavorless on rubbery corn tortillas, the ribeye was ice cold and bland...(same taco) and the crab was boring and difficult to eat. It was served on a tostada that fell to pieces when you bit into it and all the crab fell off. 3 STRIKES!!
Of course, being a new restaurant we decided to give it a little break. We ordered our entrees.
1. Chicken Echiladas Tacuba - SAME CHICKEN as above (soggy and gross) honestly my friend could not get through one of them and there were four on the plate!
2. Tampiquena - it was OK. Good enough but as in all the plates the presentation was like that of a truckstop in Mexico (it ain't pretty) Not to be super picky but when paying those outrageous prices I expect to get my money's worth! Lazy, sloppy and didn't look like alot of Mama's love went into it. Nuff said.
3. Panela a la Plancha - You guess.... Slimy, unclean cactus leaves topped with salty melted cheese and a boring salsa. Yawn and EW!
When our meals came, the meat was not cooked to temp and it was sent back. It apparently got placed at the end of the line as well because it was another 15 minutes before it came back with no explanation!!!
At one point the "Owner" came over and just said "Hello".... He didn't tell us who he was and it was kind of creepy. He just stood there like a Mortician waiting for us to tell him our thoughts which we decided to keep to ourselves. A little polite banter and he walked away. You might consider getting someone with a personality to do that job?
At one point going to the washroom I noticed one of the cooks (I believe the "sous-chef") was out at the hostess stand in his dirty kitchen clothes talking on the phone and flirting with the hostess. Must be nice!
Aside from the company I was with the night was a disaster. I will NOT be going back and highly recommend thinking twice about this place. I noticed it is on the Top 20 list of NEW restaurants in the city in Toronto Life. There must have been only 20 new restaurants open then because Milagro was number 20 and it is a far cry from Jamie Kennedy at the Gardiner which is also on that list. Very unfortunate.
I should have listened to the reviews by Joanna Cates and Amy Pataki.
Oh well, Going to make some Mexican food at home..I'm sure it will beat that crap.

Saying that Milagro is the best Mexican restaurant in Toronto, is like a truck driver saying that Tim Hortons serves the best truck-stop coffee! Obviously, Milagro is the best because there is nothing to compare it to...yet. What restaurants round out the top ten Mexican in Toronto? Coming in first place out of one contestant, is still not so hot! Hopefully this city will see new modern Mexican restaurants and follow the popular trend of new Mexican in other top U.S cities. For now, Milagro can be the best authentic high end greasy spoon in a fancy location!

Milagro restaurante Mexicano Y Cantina in my opinion is the best mexican restaurant in Toronto. I say this coming from a mexican background and have traveld to mexico a numerous of times with my parents. The food was very authentic to say that i was there yesterday with my family as we were all surprised on the food, drinks and look. With a tipical mexican Cantina look the atmosphere was plesent. Much to say that the food was much like my mothers with the original flavour of a meal that you will find in a tipical mexican home. THe drinks were also well served as it will be in mexico. The service was also really good the waiters/waitreses made it feel very acamidating. Since the rating only allows me to give a 4 star rating that is wat i will give it but put of my personal rating i give it a 9/10. Milagro is the best mexican restaurant in Toronto. I appreciate the fact that it still keeps the mexican feel and tradition of food.

Just more of a comment regarding one of your reviews of Milagro restaurant. As much as i appreciate the effort that goes into the reviews .Perhaps the review done by a "Jose Hernandez " might not be proper not only for the grammar mistakes but it also hardly makes sense . I know the person meant well but i think viewers might get the wrong impression, or think stereotypically when reading it

I'm glad you consistantly enjoy your meals at Milagro. I live in the building, and I too enjoy dining at Milagro from time to time. It's definately better than the restaurant which previously lived there. However, I think you pin-pointed the main problem with Milagro...'authentic'. It's wonderful that someone who is Mexican enjoys eating authentic homestyle food; but why not just make it yourself at home? I believe patrons in Toronto were hoping for something more interesting and exciting. Sure the food may be of higher quality, but the menu and execution is no different then any of the cheap Mexican greasy spoons in this city. We'll see what the future holds for Milagro....I hope it makes it 'till my condo lease is up! I need my pulled chicken tacos!

I have visited Milagro three times. I can honestly state that it is not only the best Mexican restaurant in Toronto (I have visited them all and can also assert that not one is truly authentic and not one is halfway decent) but one of the best Mexican restaurants outside Mexico. I grew up eating Mexican food; having mexican parents and lived in Mexico almost all of my life. The food served at Milagro is as authentic as it gets, but not only that it is executed ina a profesional environment; the restaurant is top notch and beautiful. Milagro is true to the cantina concept great food, great beverage and great service at adequate prices. In all of my visits service has been informed, fast and friendly. The tequila selection is outstanding and the Margaritas these guys pour is definitely one of the best I've had. I find it hard to understand why other reviewers have been so harsh on the restaurant. If people are looking for cheap Mexican, then go to any of the other pseudo mexican dives found all over the the GTS, none of them serve authentic or quality food. I can only assume that they do not know or understand what Mexican food is about. We've been asking for a great Mexican restaurant in Toronto for the longest time, let's celebrate the fact that it is finally here! The people at Milagro have accomplished what few Mexican restauranteurs will ever in Toronto. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to try real great Mexican food!

Well , i migth not agree with the other reviews posted here but as a mexican i think im entitled to my own opinion ;
As probably the only of reviewer aware of mexican food in every single range , from cheap to michelin star i can objectivelly compare mexican restos.
not only i grew up eating the food , but have travelled rond the world as they say .i have searched hi and low and eaten at in all the mexican restos in the city . I been here for half of my life . Milagro is the only one that actually delivers a wicked balance of grandmother cuisine and snack food . ITs too bad previous foodies have not enjoyed the cantina but i did an i trust my opinion more .
cheers , be not afraid snobery is not a mexican trait
the wine list needs improvement

I can't say Milagro is that bad I think there are worse Mexican restaurants in Toronto. At least this one has a great decor and the food is not bad. It was a little bit overpriced though. And for all the ones that were saying that there's still not a good Mexican restaurant I would recommend trying Johny Banana on Queen and Bathurst. The food is very good, prices are decent and it has a nice decor.

Having been craving real good Mexican food in Toronto for the last few years (after being forunate enough to travel to Mexico and also dine in nice restaurants in L.A., New York and Chicago) we finally decided to have a casual weeknight out at Milagro to check it out.
Food was sloppy. Service was slow and emotionless. For a high end Mexican place, we expected more liveliness and excitement. This place has got it all wrong on so many levels.
We were sat in patio chairs in a cold, lonely section of the room. The space was more than half empty, and it seemed like no one really wanted to be there. We ordered Margaritas (lime and pomegranite) which tasted way to sweet and the pomegranite tasted like berry syrup.
For food, we shared shrimp ceviche, steak tacos, lobster tacos and quacamole for apps. Shrimp was not ceviche at all...more of a salad with big chunks of fruit in it. Tasted bland and boring. The steak tacos were grey and tasted 'off'. Shredded steak topped with raw onions and herbs. Again, boring and bland. The lobster was tough, over-cooked, fishy and cold. Not even sure if it was real lobster or not. As for the quacamole...not bad. Could have used more chips though. Two attempts by our waiter to get more was left to no avail.
We hoped our entrees would save the day! Chicken mole was probably the worst thing ever served to me in a restaurant in North America! Dry, chaulkly breast with bones in it, covered with gooey thick brown chocolate sauce finished with sandy rice. My boyfriend had the steak dish with quac, rice and beans which looked like a turd! Tasted like the meat had been frozen a few times and marinated in something fishy to keep in tender. Again, one of the worst dishes we have seen. We had hoped to return both dishes, but were never checked on after our entrees were delivered. Our serve was too busy dealing with 'problems' at another table. Suffice to say, we skipped dessert. No comment was made by our waiter about the food left on the plates.
It's unfortunate that this grand place can't deliver decent, fresh, exciting food like I remember it in Mexico and in other restaurants in the U.S.
For now, the search continues. Milagro is definately no miracle!
Will not return.

I was excited to try a high-end Mexican restaurant but was quite disappointed with Milagro. The Margaritas were great but my Rib-Eye was a poor cut of meat with lots of gristle and fat. I also had a crab meat tortilla appetizer that was salty and boring.
My girlfriend had the Chili Peppers stuffed with Goat Cheese entree and it was very disappointing. It tasted strongly awful and didn't warrant being an entree; it seemed more like a bad appetizer.
The menu is quite expensive which I would be happy to pay if the meal warranted it but I have had much better meals for half the price at other mexican restaurants.
Toronto desperately needs a high-end Mexican / Latin restaurant and this one, currently, does not cut it.

I went with co-workers for lunch. I ordered the torta la choza -- it arrived on a plate looking and smelling great. Unfortunately, it tasted very bland. It looked like they added a sauce or seasoning, but no salt and pepper at all. The jamidor reposado on the rocks was pretty decent -- I've had better and worst. The bathroom smelled of "old yuk."
the second time we went for dinner Despite the attractive decor the food was absolutely terrible. The tortilla soup was served luke-warm, Enchilada tacuba was covered with what appeared to be melted Velveeta cheese. The refried beans were the worst I have ever tasted. We could not eat them. Complaints to the waitress just brought indifferent stares. Service was adequate except for the lack of interest in our feelings about the meal.
The pollo con mole ploblano was bland, and had a questionable consistency inside, which tasted more like there was some chicken skin amongst the mixture, but it was dark, and I really didn't care to find out at that point.
The margarita melon tasted like it had been made from tequila and Sprite.
About a half hour after dinner, I had to stop in at a store to pick up some Tums and extra strength aspirin, to quell the nausia and headache.
never going back.

Went there with a friend for dinner Friday and we were quite pleased with the experience. Here's our take:
1. It's a nice restaurant you don't HAVE to dress up for (we came in our jeans and didn't feel like we stuck out for our casualness)...very good thing.
2. Our server was not only very courteous and helpful with explaining the menu but also struck the right balance of looking after us without intruding every five minutes vs. entirely ignoring us. Yes, this is a rarety in Toronto.
3. The renovation is gorgeous. The bar makes use of some of the most lovely laquered wood I've seen in a long time (without making the rest of the place look heavy). They play authentic Mexican music in the background and the decor is very happy and light. They've made great use of the vaulted ceilings to create a very airy and comfortable atmosphere. And that ugly smoking room from the Monte Cristo past...GONE!
4. Our order was fast. And I don't mean for a nice restaurant kind of fast, but just plain fast. We didnt' wait longer than fifteen minutes from the time we ordered and received our drinks, then gave our food order. Speaking of the food, although my Enchilada Tacuba left a little to be desired (chicken and cheese were great, although the tortilla wrap may have been a little overcooked) my friend's conchinita pibil was fantastic and decievingly large portioned. I'll have to try it next time.
5. I consider this the best part of all, I was able to enjoy a delicious chocolate truffle cake served with vanilla whipped because as our server confirmed... all the desserts were PEANUT FREE! Just for that alone, I'll come back. Oh, and also to try the pibil.
Overall, we were happy and definitely look forward to our next visit.

While calling to make a reservation, I was put on hold twice and each time the person on the other end came back to the phone she acted as though it was the first time she was speaking to me. I made my reservation for two in the dining room. However, when we arrived we were seated on the patio even though the restaurant was completely empty.
We were graciously greeted by our server who's wrinkled shirt and dirty shoes were an instant eye-sore. Ok fine, we'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he has a day job and didn't have time while running from one job to the other.
The menu is filled with a fabulous array of tasty items, each one reading as irresitible and delectable. Being a self proclaimed "foodie" and former server of 15 years, I often test the knowledge of the wait staff by pretending I am unsure of certain preparations in hopes that they able to enlighten me. When serving "authentic mexican" it's important your wait staff know what ceviche means - our server did not, his explaination was laughable. I ordered the beef medium rare and was served well done sawdust. My partner order the tuna which was prepared perfectly. The beans in which we ordered to accompany our entrees separately arrived at our table dry from the heat lamp when we were finished our meals - we sent them back thank you very much.
The restaurant is tastefully decorated and the staff members are nice to look at. If you're looking for "bang for your buck" this is not the place to be. Overpriced!!!!!

Very good. Milagro Restaurante didn't blow my mind like Johnny Bannana did the first time i ate there... But still very, delicious. best steak de Atún Chiapasi ever. The name's not right, but it's just magical deliciousness...tomatoes and bay leaves and onions...perfect. the veggie burrito with pan fried veggies was really good but i'm not sure how often i will be craving a big bag o' vegetables. And that is my report. Subject to change upon future visits. Ciao Ciao!
