mack across from the Paramount Theatre on Richmond Street West, the warehouse-sized Metro has come to life with a nightly plethora of clubland-lifestyle fun under-what else? - a 10,000-square-foot metropolis. This open-space, multi-leveled, pink-floored multi-club has the potential of offering a diverse night, and -depending on what section you’ve gotten stuck in - the chance to hear the voice of your one-night stand.
Loud Indian trance beat music and bottle-service banquette pods on the main level suggest that you’ve entered a club, the main room reflecting its crowd: good-looking and young, fashionable yet unfussy. Aesthetically, Metro’s transient theme is more Miami (please, can we end the Miami infatuation) than the smart-alecky intensity we've come to expect from Metro's owners, the hands behind Fluid and Bottled By Fluid.
Three bars are located on two levels that can service up to 1,500 people. On the second floor, a lounge uses a revolving lighting system that transorms the room from one colour to another. Even the bathroom feels like a party; you're more likely to encounter admiring smiles and tipsy chit-chat than catty chicks fighting for mirror space.
While the competition for large-capacity clubs stiff these days, Metro begins life with a ferociously competitive weekly lineup. Wednesdays are ‘Sin in the City’ from 4Nuts; ZRF bring the house down on Fridays with ‘Traffic’; Metro Star Saturdays is with B*A Promotions (with DJ’s Jimmy Jamm, Tommy Paps and DJ frankie) owning the house; and Metro Station Sundays’ unique shrine to house music is the brainchild of PLAY Productions.
But at Metro, Thursday is the new Saturday. The hottest night at Metro is the Thursday ‘Metro Couture’ event, featuring avant-garde fashion shows that pair designers showing their wares on the runway with local electronica DJs spinning Neo-Soul, House, old skool and Latin Jazz beats. A different designer will be featured every week, orchestrating a decorative theme for that feature night.
