    IMattino, Torontot's easy to come up with a novel concept for a new bar or restaurant, but in some of Toronto's trendier neighbourhoods, a new spot has to fit the existing character of the area. Supermarket's Asian-fusion College Street offshoot, Tempo (then Mini-Market by Tempo), despite numerous updates, never quite adapted to its environment, and eventually had to shut its doors. Taking over the space, Mattino has much more of a College Street vibe.

    Unlike many first-time restaurateurs, owner Rachel Wang hasn't charged in with unlimited ambition and tried to reinvent Toronto. Instead, she's surrounded herself with an optimistic team of veterans and built a confident neighbourhood spot – nothing too fancy, but one designed to command attention. Mattino is primarily an Italian restaurant with a bar tinge (sound familiar?), but from this early stage, it is attempting to differentiate itself from its Little Italy brethren and breathe on its own.Take a quick look at the menu, and you'll see what I mean. Yes, the dishes are all Mediterranean, but they're far from traditional.

    What's the first thing you think of when you think Italian dining? If you said pasta, you're right. And it's nowhere to be found (at least not yet). Instead, the restaurant offers a small selection of lighter, seasonal twists on Italian cooking. Chef Antonio Mahne's dishes show a respect for regional cooking, but also a willingness to create quirky updates on the staples. Take, for instance, the signature appetizer, not polenta, but Polenta Fries, cut into strips, deep fried, and tossed with shaved reggiano cheese, fresh thyme, and served with lemon aioli and tomato basil sauces as "dips".

    The menu is heavy on fresh seafood, with Crispy Calamari Strips, Shrimp Diavola, and Seared East Coast Scallops all on offer, while a 10 ounce Rib Eye Steak (served with red wine, rosemary, and peppercorn butter), Grilled Veal Striploin Medallions, and an ever-changing Anti Pasto platter offer plenty of carnivorous selections. Fitting with the casual, 'hood-friendly vibe, no menu item exceeds $20.

    Mattino does moonlight as a bar, but General Manager Kody Giallonardo insists it’s a restaurant first. "We want to avoid the 'shit and leave' syndrome'," he says. "Mattino is about enjoyment, not overindulgence." As a result, much of the ostentatious loungey décor of Mini-Market has been toned down, replacing banquettes and lime green colour motifs with earth tones and table seating. A long marble bar is used not just as a drinking area, but is also well-suited for dining. Right next to the bar sits a "small and rocking" open kitchen (hopefully no one sneezes).

    Food was only so-so. Oil ratio on most dishes was waaay to heavy. Fries were swimming in oil. This was rather disappointing. Wait staff was excellent.

    Hello all, my name is Kody and I was the general manager at Mattino until I was let go today. I am writing this message not out of spite but out of respect for all of the patrons that I have had the pleasure of meeting since the restaurant opened its doors six short weeks ago. It is unfortunate but the owners seem to think that opening a restaurant equals immediate profits. I have been involved in the restaurant industry for many years and know better. It saddens me that I will not be able to witness the success of Mattino. I truly believe that we had a good thing going. I have been told that the restaurant will be managed by the owner and based on this I would not expect the same service or atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoyed trying to make the Mattino experience one of good food, great service and neighbourhood charm.

    I was there yesterday. I liked it. My mushroom risotto was really tasty and service super friendly. It is very college style place.

    re lindsay d "You may have to endure second hand smoke" - sitting on a patio ,outside next to a major street with hundreds of cars/trucks/motorcycles spewing carbon monoxide
    i don't smoke but i get so pissed at people that look down there noses at people who do.
    My parents have smoked most of their lives and they are very healthy maybe go see a doctor once a year and they are in their 80's oh i enjoy Mattino's patio and food as well

    Sitting proudly along College Street and directly across from The Dip, Mattino has probably the area’s best crowd watching views – and surprisingly is in a quiet part of the strip, with the restaurant itself being relatively unimposing.

    I've seen a couple establishments come and go in this location, but I was genuinely intrigued when the paper came off the newly expanded windows at Mattino and I saw the gorgeous rounded granite bar top & romantic lighting design.

    I went in one night to sample the drinks with friends from the neighbourhood, and we were greeted immediately by the GM (who we now know fondly as Kody). I can't remember the last time I was made to feel so totally at home. The bar staff put so much care into the preparation, and were enthusiastic to share new mixes and to get our feedback. I'm not exaggerating when I say I had the best dry & dirty martini of my entire life there. They used a dark olive brine that offered a sweetened aftertaste to every sip.

    The huge windows at Mattino allow you some great Little Italy people-watching without having to sit on a patio (where one may have to endure 2nd-hand smoke). Although, the patio at Mattino is small, it's charming and intimate. The music selection at Mattino also deserves a massive thumbs up.

    I've since been back for dinner, and had the seared Branzino & summer salad (with asparagus, ripe olives, green beans, etc.). I always eavesdrop on the other diners, and heard people raving about the asparagus with white truffle butter and the pappardelle aglio e olio. I have to say, my favourite so far comes off the appetizer menu; the polenta fries, with shaved reggiano, rosemary, basil, and served with lemon aioli and tomato dipping sauces. Perfect with a pint or two, although they also have a killer wine-list. During that meal, I saw a few familiar faces walk-in from the foodie community. Always a good sign.

    The friendliness and charm of the staff, and a fantastic chef is what is going to make this place really stand out on the strip. I have a feeling I'll be forced to endure line-ups very soon at Mattino.

    I didn't feel like this place lived up to the hype that's talked about elsewhere. I felt like the food was too haphazardly done. The location is prime and the restaurant is cute, but the food disappointed me. It's a good place to take someone on a date on the cheap.

    I came here for a friend's going away party and felt like it was a pretty nice bar. There is a streetside patio, and our friends basically got the inside to ourselves. The facilities are plain, but cute and I have no complaints. I don't think I'd go back though.

    Mini Market was my patio of choice 2-3 times a week - loved the food
    i decided to give Mattino a try on Saturday to see if this would still be my destination of choice. What a surprise i dont know how they make such good food from such a small kitchen. My friend and i both had the Scallop appetizer to start huge portion and great flavours! for our mains i had the rack of lamb in a Southern Comfort glaze soooo good! and my friend had the steak and really enjoyed it as well. The Mattino Martini was huge and very good. I will be back all summer as i live on Clinton St. What a nice surprise as i expected to not like it after missing Mini Market - I will go to Supermarket to get my fix of their Asian Tapas.

    Good solid entry to the scene - a few minimal things to be worked out, which I am sure will happen as it has only been open for a few weeks . . . The menu is a good change from the "usual" given the locale. Service is more than friendly. Can't wait for the patio to open to enjoy more of the view.

    Decent entry to the College Street scene. Mattino seems to have also imparted a few lessons to the bartending staff, who are wise to the subtle ways of martini creation.

    This place is really growing on me. It's got ample charm & personality and already a cool, local clientele, a relaxing side patio, and cheap prices. It's the same idea as The Dip - but, done a bit better.

    If you can, sit by the big main window and while you enjoy the great food and atmosphere of the restaurant, marvel at the wonderful culture of College St. Make sure you try the Caesar del Sole, awesome!
