ate to start, the supper club concept has certainly taken hold of this city. With some wonderfully ballsy clubs out there - including Ultra Supper club and unsurprisingly short-lived emulations like Forget About It Supper club - Maro is the latest entry. Daringly enough, this badboy is located, not in the downtown core but, in an amped-up warehouse space in Liberty Village.
Indeed, Liberty Village is far removed from the restaurant and club scene. However, geography is immaterial to interior as Maro takes you on its own cultural expedition. Clocking in at 14,000 square feet, this monstrous venue soaks up every recent trend in global hot spots, from cuisine, under the rule of Chef David Adjey, to its Asian décor overload.
Owned by the Brant Group (West Lounge, Brassaii, Brant House), Maro’s basic premise - high-level Euro-Asian fare served in a supper club setting - is a fairly attractive one. Co-designers Marc Kyriacou and John Tsoumaris have reached way beyond the proverbial box with their design; from the reno of the warehouse space to the floor-to-ceiling banquettes that fill the VIP lounge above the dining area.
Three marble-covered bars with an indoor brick backsplash have been cleverly spread from one end of the main level to the next, making bar access easy for those who dwell in the various lounge areas. The walls are accented by marble fireplaces, which in turn are covered by an intricate sheet of meshed metal and printed silk sheets that reach up to the Thai-inspired ceiling panels.
The open-concept kitchen, resembling an assembly line, is a frenzy of activity, with all tasks executed by Sir Adjey, who has his own vision for the menu at Maro. Inspired by the ‘Silk Road’ Trade Route, he has concocted a menu that is divided between European and Asian flavours; concoctions are meant to be symbolic of 1st century BC, when China wanted to create a road connecting the Western World with India.

83 Reader Reviews | Looks like a nice place to go for a drink or two if you dont mind rubbing elbows with pretentious shitheads. However, if you plan to have dinner there, keep this in mind...#1, the actual menu is completely different than the one on the website. #2, the actual menu sucks balls (plain and boring). #3, the hostess is a total bitch (which kind of sets the mood for what you should expect from everyone else there).#4, WAY OVERPRICED. Our waiter saw we weren't impressed at all, and agreed that the food is not good. Obviously we were not the first people to complain, because he seemed to agree with our complaints, with a "i've seen this too many times" type of attitude.
NOT GOOD

Honestly dont waste your time or money at this factory turned club. Their staff look like not only they hat their night job but also their day jobs. Save your money and time and go to a real club like muzik which is not too far from this craphole of a club.

This place is a joke. Service was brutal, esp for a somewhat empty venue. Menu is sparse, ordered steak tar tar and it literally tasted like raw onion. No one enjoyed the food.
Bar is filled with shallow pretentious wannabe's. Prices are outrageous.

I will admit up front these places are not typically my cup of tea. Spent last night @ Maro for a friends Stag.
We found the wait staff to be friendly once they got around to you. But there was certainly gaps in service, if you drink your drink fast be prepared to wait for your server to return.
The food was a great dissapointment. I ordered Steak Tar Tar. All I could taste was salt and raw onion. I honestly downed close to three liters of water while eating this in order to get it down, it was so salty. The menu was very limited also in selection. Perhaps 4-5 entrees.

I'd rather get a root canal on a Saturday night than go back to Maro. It's a beautiful looking bar/restaurant but the service is dreadful. The atmosphere is pretentious and the music could be so much better. Most staff were miserable and none cracked a smile at all. Our party left early and went to a real club.

Why does this city allow high school power tripping dopes to work doors at clubs. Had some frds in from Boston, but even though we were all dressed nice one of my friends had a boston red sox jacket... so even though he could take the jacket off. The doormen would not lets us in to the club. If your trying to get people to come to your club which is off the main path... maybe having some customer service and not morons at the door would help build some good will. I wont go back. Just too much of a waste of time and life's to short to have to deal with a dopeman.

Went there with some friends for dinner last w/e as we heard good things. 4 people got food poisoning and even with guestlist they denied entry to some of friends making excuses about how sporty their leather shoes were. NEVER SPEND A DIME AT THAT PLACE. it's horrible and I would get the health board to pay them a surprise visit.

Marben can get a little crowded. I would recommended sitting up front where you can order tapas style dishes and watch them cook it right up. Inventive, varied dishes ... but the place turns into a club crowd after 10.00. Great way to good out and warm up to a nice meal with some good friends who don't mind people dancing on your table (after a certain hour).

I tried this spot becuase of martiniboys.com. It's more of a club than restaurant, but it's oozing with all of the essentials. If dining though, just make sure you're in and out by 10:00!

I went there on Feb 9/08 for a friend's birthday and had a great first experience! I called in advance for guest list and when we arrived the bouncers were very friendly and let us by pass the line eventhough we arrived about 15 mins after guest list closed. The atmosphere was classy and modern and the music was AMAZIng....mostly DANCE and HOUSE music all night long, with some hip/hop. The crowd mostly seemed 25+ :) and well dressed.....good looking crowd and mostly European :)......The only down fall was the female bartenders seemed miserable and made women wait longer to get a drink then the men and also that not a lot of ppl were dancing.

This club is run by a bunch of racist fools. Made a confirmed guestlist reservation for a birthday party for 30 people. Showed up at 10pm on a saturday night... really early and it's empty. The girls walk in first with no problem, but then about 20 asian guys come up and they stop us. They say we're not on the guestlist and won't let us in. They won't give me the number of the club to call the girl who reserved it for us. They won't help or even consider letting us in. This place has lousy service and i'm extremely disappointed that this happens in Toronto in a club that is probably predominantly WHITE.

I had the pleasure of being amongst the sexy, hot Maro attendees on Sat Dec 1/07. Never been there before, although I have been to Brant on several occasions! I went with a couple of my buddies and I must admit, the experience was exhilirating! Beautiful ladies, fine looking men(no I am not gay) and gratifying music. What more can you ask for on a Saturday night? One thing that I failed to notice was people dancing....they huddled in groups, but did not shake that booty. Why bother going out ladies, if you are not going to shake your God Given Gift.
Next time around, I would like to go there for appetizers/dinner.
Reading some of the reviews, it certainly seems like women are attracted to CHEFS! Hey, I am a cook myself.....and single. LOL

food was good, service was friendly, got the fixed price meal so it wasn't too pricey, but it gets really loud later on when the place transforms into a club.
+1 for the cute asian servers!

I took my girlfriend out to Maro on Saturday night and I have to say overall I was impressed with the experience. We sat near the kitchen so we got to see our food being prepared which was a first for me. The sushi was incredible and our server Suzy was amazing. The only thing I didn't enjoy about the evening was how long it took to get through the crowd to the mens room.

Went Friday (Aug 10th) to join a friend's birthday celebration. Arrived well in time for the guest list onlt to find groups of people leaving as the place was not busy. The door was totally disorganized or the doormen do not want this place to do well. Despite four people walking around with guest lists (including one doorman)half the people including me were turned away for not being on the list. My friend physically confirmed with an usher inside that I was on the list yet doormen would not budge. I offered to pay but no luck.
I am in my mid-thirties and have been to countless clubs/lounges in North America but never been treated this way. Given that Toronto is a social hub that we are proud of I am ashamed to think that places like this exist to ruin our reputation. I also find it hard to believe that a significant organization like the Brant group ignores the several complaints I have read here about how the door is handled. Six doormen to enforce a guest list on a Friday night...what am I missing??

I would just like to say that....I had the best time @ Maro last Saturday, then I have had in a long time. A few girls and myself decided to go last Saturday for a firends Bday. We had sushi, and drinks, and waited for the party to begin! AND BEGIN IT DID! There are not too many places you can go to where even the Door men are GREAT! Extreamly nice and inviting! Kudos to you boys! :D I shouldn't say this part...BUT LADIES!! There are at least 5 classy MEN, to 1 Woman! Thats what I like to see....soowie guys LOL :P I mean this place is classy. The MEN dont walk by and grab your a$$, they walk by and Buy you a drink! That was my experiance anyway. I give this Wonderful Classy place 10 STARS!! :D again, thank you too the staff for FINALLY making a night out with the girls fun! ~Tiff~

I agree with you (review from March) that Maro is a great place for fun and having a flirty chef who kicks ass on food creativity, is a lucky thing in Toronto. It's one thing to be passionate about your food - it's another if you seem pompus or rude to your guests. Adjey is easy on the eyes too, which is nice. Too bad he's not there anymore. The girls and I searched for him the other night. Heard he left.

I am going this evening (March 17). I will fill in my review tomorrow....and 'yes' I live above Steeles, but it doesn't make me stupid. I have been to Nectar a few times, I loved the food, and even had Mr. Adjey at my table. Every great chef I have ever met has been a terrific flirt, loud boisterous and a risk taker. Have you ever had dinner at Pied Du Cochon in Montreal? That man is the best...a flirt too.
So I disagree with the assumption that because the Chef is out front 'schmoozing', does not mean the food is not his....A good chef's staff know exactly what the concept is and are brow-beaten until it is accomplished.
Mr. Adjey is a accomplished chef, and Toronto is lucky that he likes to spend his time here.....Because there is always, Montreal, San Diego, Tuscany or South Beach!

I just had a girl's dinner/dancing night at Maro this past Friday. I had made reservations and they were so accommodating to us. Starting from the super friendly girl at the front desk, the upbeat coat check guy, the chef, and our adorable waiter Jamie, the service was AMAZING and courteous. We ordered tonnes of appetizers, which were all delicious, our mains were great and the desserts were yummy. I am sure that there were some problems at the beginning when the restaurant opened, but my experience at Maro was A+. I think that there are way too many haters. Would definitely go again.

Wow, some people are really bitter. After reading all of the bad reviews, there was no way I would ever even drive by Maro. One of my friends decided she wanted to celebrate her birthday at a place where we could eat and then dance. Anyway, the food impressed me. I had sushi to start, and then the beef. Sushi was awsome! The beef was OK (I ordered it medium rare, and it was a bit underdone for my taste. The thing that really impressed me was the atmosphere after dinner.
A word of advise for people intending to go to Maro, its a club that serves food. If you are expecting a romantic date place, its not for you. If you are looking to party, then GO!

I am pleased to announce that, since my previous experience with Maro the management have been very involved with me to ensure our comments were heard and our concerns taken to heart. I pointed them in the direction of this review site and I know they are working diligently to "raise their game". This alone is a success for them as acknowledging a weakness is the biggest step in addressing it.
On my initial visit I was impressed with the food & decor but not with the culture and service. Now that they have gone the extra mile to speak with me and correct the latter, I am compelled to raise my ratings back up again. Maro has the right framework to provide a good night on the town.

I was searching David Adjey on the net as I'm a fan of Restaurant Makeover and it lead me to this site. Wow! This guy really must have pissed into someone's cornflakes or maybe their "Seven Deadly Sins" or maybe he has some disgruntled former associates and competitors. Most of these reviews don't have much to say about the food. I visited his former establishment, Nectar, a year ago and enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. I even spoke with the man. Seemed a decent enough sort and the food was delicious and well priced for an up-scale restaurant. Both my date and I had an enjoyable time. These polarized opinions have piqued my curiosity. I'm going to try out Maro for dinner to determine for myself if the reviews so far are intended to shill or kill. On the basis of the guys rep and my own past experience I'm going in anticipating at least a 3 star experience but also with an open mind. Stay tuned.

Unfortunaely I did not get to experience the food at Maro , but after the reviews I have heard I'm not sure that's a bad thing. I had called on a Tuesday to ensure that a group of friends and I could be on the guest list for Saturday. I was ensured that we were going to be on the guest list before 11 and that there would be no cover. There were a group of 6 of us and we ended up having to take 2 cabs that did not arrive at the same time. When the first group got there at 10 we were told we were not on the list and we would have to wait in line, luckily after about 20 minutes we talked our way in but still had to pay a cover charge (again we were told we would not have to) When the second group arrived they were told that Maro had done enough for our friends and they would have to wait. I think that the bar was very nice inside and they have done an amazing job on the interior. Its too bad they have hired staff that are unable to deal with the public.

I have to agree with the most of the other posters. Maro is to be avoided, especially the food. I can't comment on the cook's attitude but I can comment on his fair. Pretentious? That wouldn't bother me if it were appetizing, however, the Emperor lacks clothes.

To Pete:
You don’t get it, my comment was about the service. There was plenty of mention in previous reviews that the servers were rude which as I have stated, I’ve never experienced.
I get that Chef David Adjey saw a table full of women, which is why he sat with us in the first place.
From my experience you get what you put out. So if you portray an obnoxious attitude that is what you will get in return. Not saying it’s right, but it certainly true in most cases. Manners and being polite go a long way.
I said I’ve been several times. I am not a regular. My experience has always been good, except for as I mentioned the after dinner crowd demographic has changed.
I’m from Toronto, not the god-forsaken land above Steeles. Also, I did not go to high school in Woodbridge/Maple, nor did I ride the short bus or any bus for that matter.
That’s all.

To Femme...what part of the reviews didnt you understand which states....Chef Adjay is more inclined to be out picking up women than working on his food creations in the kitchen. So you dont get it. People hate it and from my experience probably should.
If you are a regular, you must be part of that "Woodbride/Maple" type grouping that you allude to, and are just a bit slow to get that. We had people like that in high school but fortunately they rode on the small bus to help them figure it out.

That’s all.

I have to agree with the most of the other posters. Maro is to be avoided, especially the food. I can't comment on the cook's attitude but I can comment on his fair. Pretentious? That wouldn't bother me if it were appetizing, however, the Emperor lacks clothes.

This place started out okay. Fine looking crowd but the novelty has sooooo worn off. Unattractive old(!!) people looking for younger people of the opposite sex. Okay, look, to each their own, but don't make me wait in line for this. Also I don't know what the deal is but on several occasions I have tried to enter a private party I have been invited to only to again, wait in line. So like most places, I give this a few more months and then it's back to "sooo yesterday" status.

I have to agree with Nadaloou's statement regarding people being more inclined to share the negative experience.
I have been to Maro (dinner or dancing and sometimes both) several times starting with opening night right up until last night.
The service is always top notch and I have never received a condescending attitude. Could the servers be a little more informative in helping pair a wine with your dinner selection? Yes, but condescending and rude??? Absolutely not!! I have never experienced this. I have always enjoyed my dinners at Maro.
Last night I was there with a few of my friends and Chef David Adjey sat with us for a bit to talk. For those who think he has attitude, you know what, I'm not going to deny it, he does. The guy demands perfection which is reflective in his food. Personally, I prefer someone striving for perfection than others who haphazardly throw something together and call it dinner.
The only complaint I do have is the fact that Maro turns into a club afterwards which when you are nearing the end of your meal it gets a bit loud and difficult to hear your companions. This by no means is the fault of the restaurant as my friends and I had purposely made late reservations as we intended to be there to dance afterwards. This is just a note for those just expecting a chill night of dinner only. If you are, book your reservations earlier so that you can avoid the "club" atmosphere.
To the reviewer who didn't get to dessert - it was amazing. It's called "Seven Deadly Sins" which comprises of seven separate bite size desserts. In the future, if you have a nut allergy, let the server know as I'm sure the server would be more than happy to oblige in making sure you did not get any "nut dessert" so that they can substitute it with something else.
As for the clubbing experience, when the place first opened, it was AMAZING. Great crowd, sexy, hip, sophisticated, established...all of the great stuff needed for making a great night out. Now it's a bunch of obnoxious, rude, arrogant, disrespectful, sleazy and greasy wanna-be-GOTTI type. It was as if Woodbridge & Maple exploded within club (have you ever been to Staten Island or seen the Jersey Guidos?). Hopefully the door staff will start to be a little more discriminating in who is able to enter.
I will definitely continue to return to Maro, but just for dinner.

I would have to disagree with all of the negativity I have read. I believe it is human nature to want to share the worst experiences you have had and unfortunately the people who enjoy this place wouldn't take the time to write about it. That's the way it goes I guess. I found the food to be satisfying. I have never had an issue at the door and the bartenders are always nice and quick. The atmosphere is kick *ss and as far as pretentious goes, you attract the vibe that you are portraying yourself. Overall, it's a great place to have fun, have a drink and to kick it up on the weekend. If you are looking for quick service, try McDonald's next time.

If you take the time to read the other reviews I think you will see a consistent message. On personal reference, from a reliable source, I took my Fiancé to Maro's this weekend as a birthday celebration. We were looking for a place with good food, atmosphere, and offering a lounge-like environment to warrant some late night cocktails. Unfortunately we didn't get past dessert.
While the food was respectable, I was terribly disappointed with the service. Our server portrayed a clearly condescending attitude which escalated as the night wore on. When asked for an espresso martini she became visibly perturbed and let us know that she would have to make the martini herself and couldn't guarantee the drink would meet expectations (too lazy...while only having 3 tables seated for dinner).
When we inquired about dessert she suggested that it changed nightly (OK) but then refused to find out what it was saying that she insisted on surprising her "customers". I told her that I didn't want to pay for a surprise, might not care for the potential peanut reaction (lie) and that she could forget the drink orders and get me the bill.
The bill came and was dropped at the edge of the table without a comment or gesture of gratitude for choosing Maro.
I've spent 12 years in the restaurant industry and have never witnessed that degree of pretentious and condescending behavior. Unacceptable!!!! Rather than simply leaving unsatisfied I actually left angry! It ruined my night and nearly my weekend.
If her behavior accurately represents the culture of this venue (which I believe it does based on the other reviews) then I would recommend you stay far away from Maro as this city has too many great alternatives to spend you hard earned cash with.
Trust me, any other choice is a better choice!

Without a doubt, the worst club I have ever been to. This wannabe highend club has nobody doorman who think they own the place, when in reality they probably can't even afford a drink in this bar. I had to look for a review panel to warn everyone out there to boycott Maro. Unless you just got out of the trailer park, you might blend in with this horrible bar. If I could give this place a lower rating then 1, I would, but the scale doesn't go to -10.

unfortunately, maro is not one of them. how there is room in the

head in there too, is beyond me!!
the guy should check out what the hot young chefs are doing
and not relying on his old standbys and wannabe celebrity

NEXT!!!

Went there on a Saturday night and the nobody bouncers seem to think they're worth something, well when I bring out wealthy clients from out of town to a restaurant/lounge that is suppose to be the new hot spot in town, which in my opinion is far from it, you would expect to be treated well. The worst of it is that I had reservations.
I agree with the previous reviews, VERY TERRIBLE SERVICE, people that think that they have money but probably do not have dime to their name. I would not recommend this place if you want to take out clients or friends that have money because there is no service nor is the food the caliber of a decent restaurant. You're better off going somewhere else on king st.

First of all when we have to reate Food, Service, Atmosphere, value and Seating, the only category I could give a 4 to (which is the highest score) was atmposphere! It's a great looking place, has a great feel and vibe but everything else sucks. For food, I didn't even taste the food because when my group of 12 went for dinner, we were, first of all, seated over an hour later even though we had reservations. Then when we were seated, we ordered appetizers and our entres after about 25 minutes from when drinks were ordered, and an hour after that we were still waiting for the appetizers to come! We had a table behind us finish their meal and another party seated, and then table beside them was seated after us, and they were served appetizers after 5 minutes (apparently they were friends of the this chef that's suppose to be so famous!). I'm sorry but this is not the kind of service you expect with 12 guests ready to order drinks, appetizers, entres, and we had a booth waiting for us after dinner in the club! We immediatley asked for the bill to leave and never went back there again. We approached the owner, and he didn't even do anything about it, making excuses that the kitchen had only been open for a day and that they can't do anything about it. NO compensation for anything, no gift certificate to come back, NOTHING!-This is poor service in my eyes!

I recently went to Maro for dinner with a large group of friends. The service was absolutely appalling. For a 'fine dining' restaurant the server was extremely unpolished in terms of couth. He made several sarcastic comments including 'if you all speak at the same time, it will be much easier for me to understand you'. I was shocked at how rude he was given that the total was over $100 per person. Our party was late to arrive and we were reminded repeatedly by our waiter as well as the manager that we were going to have to 'hurry along' as there were other people coming in after us. The restaurant was completely empty and we were being extremely accomodating, including suggestions to start apps before our entire party arrived. Not once did anyone (including the manager) attempt to suggest an alternative such as having us move to the lounge for dessert, etc. It was the worst customer service I have ever experienced and I will never go back to Maro, ever.

Working in the bar industry for over 10 years, you would figure that the older the clientele at a specific bar/ lounge would be more mature, but it seems like this is NOT the case. Rather than go into details that did occur recently, all I can say is that if you are a old school, ignorant, unconfident, racist person of Italian or Eupoean in general decent, this is probably the place for you. The only positive point that I will note is that the decor is stunning. As for bouncers, owners and management, I think it would be best for them to move the location to either Italy or little Italy where their hate for anyone other than then their own can all choke on their bottles of Sambuca.

I heard alot of hype about this place. The wait in line was longer than usual, probably cause it was freezing. The crowd trying to get in was huge. When I finally got inside it was quite the experience. There were hot women everywhere and the atmosphere was fantastic. It remended me of early Branthouse days. I have to say it was worth the wait to get in, although I am going to wait til the weather gets warmer to go back. I hate standing in line in the winter.

All I can say is "who the heck does that Adjey guy think he is?" He is a joke and not a funny one....if you are going to walk around like you are a celebrity you should at least be able to prepare a meal that tastes better than a microwave special....he has no credibility as a REAL chef whatsoever....the space is beautiful but they should focus on service and being a bar...that is what they are good at...either that get one of the other chef's from Restaurant Makeover to come and fix the menu

After hearing about this place from a reliable source, I thought okay, lets try something new. I tried contacting Maro for three weeks via phone/email/website, to make reservations for dinner with no reply!! I called Brant House and ratted out the unprofessional behaviour of their baby sister. The lady on the phone assured me that I would get a phone call from someone at Maro; five minutes later my cellie is ringing off the hook [thank you nice lady at Brant House]. I'm on the phone with a lady at Maro, and explained to her that due to them not getting back to me regarding the dinner menu at Maro that they just lost a 16 seat dinner reservation. I would like to come to Maro for dancing and inquired about there guest list. She informed me that for guest list we have to do bottle service, the cheapest bottle of vodka was $225 which is for a maximum of four people to share, once doing the math I realized that we would need 8 bottles which would cost $1800. I told her that not everyone would drink vodka, so you would think as a business minded person wanting to make her employer money and wanting our business she would of said, 'let me email/fax you our bottle service menu, and we can work something out', nopes!: she just turned around and told me that she would recommend my group get there before 10 p.m. to avoid the line up!!! I'm slightly annoyed but was defeated. The next day I get a phone call at work from Eillen at Maro. I'm retelling my predicament to her, as I told her coworker just the other day. She told me that she would give me a guaranteed guest list till 10:30 p.m.
Maro was impressive. I didn't get a chance to scan the entire place, but from what I did see I was impressed. The smoking lounge outside was fantastic, would love to see it in the summer! The male bartendars, very professional, really nice, gave me my order with a smile. The female bartendar was well: note to female bartendars, women customers do actually tip very well, so take care and be nice to them also!! I didn't find the drinks to be expensive at all and the the drinks weren't weak. I found all the bouncers to be really nice, I didn't get the attitude or see the attitude that I've read in alot of the reviews. The music was okay it was a little disjointed, it never flowed, and the music just seemed all wrong for the venue, if that makes any sense. Hopefully the music will be a lot better and a little more on the funky/neo-soul side as opposed to the generic side!!! I would definitely give Maro out again and when I do you will get the review!
72. Tonia's Review :: November 10, 2006 Tonia's Rating: 3 Stars |
Sad state of affairs - didn't even go in. The bouncers let the group of three people in front of us in line swell their ranks to nine people (made up of groups of twos and threes they knew in line behind not only us, but several other groups behind us) as they were allowing them past the rope, and then were going to make us wait another 15 minutes. Considering the staff said nothing to anyone and pretended not to notice, I said something to the fellow in line in front of us that his actions really weren't fair, and he told me to stuff it. We opted to leave rather than spend our evening at a place that condones that sort of behaviour and with that sort of people.

We arrived at 11 & didn't have to wait outside. The lineup to get a drink was irritatingly longer. The ambience is excellent - spacious & beautiful & decent music. The crowd is still sorting themselves out: Old Italian men! Would wait a while to return...but would definitely return.

Growing up sure is painful! Understandably, when a place first opens up there are going to be hiccups and wrinkles to iron out. Fair enough...But a few suggestions: If someone spends thousands of dollars in alchohol at a booth, remember their face and their name. That way, when they come back the very next week, they won't have to be held outside in the cold like they're a nobody. They're not only a somebody, but they could tell other "somebodies" about the place and help it grow. There needs to be better communication between the servers who know who spends and the big burly men outside. Right now, there seems to be none. Also, doormen need to remember the saying, "Ladies First." When there are women waiting outside, there's a problem. When there are attractive women who spend a lot of money stuck outside, there's an even bigger problem. Perhaps a guest list creating by the servers/bartenders is one way to start.

Considering the place just opened you would think they would be a little pleasant. I will admit i found the manager Max to be very polite and courteous, however the waitstaff was really pompous, can't quite figure out why the chef was running around trying to pick up half the females that work there - he should be in the kitchen perfecting his ho-hum list of items on the menu! Has he tried some of the tasteless stuff he puts out there? It's a nice looking venue, but i suggest firing most of the staff and they should start with the chef!

Although a very hip and stylish place to be seen in I'm sure, im not sure what is more plastic and fake, the service and staff here or the patrons attending on a nightly basis.
Lets start the experience with the no line, no people attitude of the bouncers at the front...literally no people around and they still had us stop at the velvet rope so he could check guest list.
When inside, an overstaffed and underqualified to make decisions host system was in place for our party where each didnt have a clue what the other was doing. Thats not fair, in fairness they seem to be good at apologizing all night long though for incompentant staff or unruly patrons.
Third David Adjay prances around from the kitchen across the floor as an A list celebrity when in essence should be clasified as D list nobody. What show is he on occasionally and does anyone watch it?
Yes there are good looking people here and will be the place to be seen but if your crowd is a bunch of poser wanna be's and weekend millionaires bumping into each other on the floor then go ahead. This place is so pretentious it makes This is London and Easy on the Fifth look like local pub hangouts.
If you like the supper club atmosphere Toronto has better.

What a horrible experience I had at Maro. We hosted a party there and the bouncers and staff were a**holes. They let people trickle in very slowly, even though the place was empty. Even though I hosted the party, they made my parents wait outside for 30 minutes in the cold when there were just a few people inside. When I came outside and approached the bouncer about it (and I'm a polite person, I might add), he threatened that I should go back inside or he would kick me out.
Some of the bartenders were nice - some had attitude. One employee there came to me at the end of the night and apologized for the rest of his coworkers, acknowledging that they're always like that.
Some of my friends were charged more than others for cover (and I didn't find out 'til later). One friend was charged double for coat check after shoving her scarf in her jacket sleeve. WTF???
Last time I _EVER_ go there. Don't support that kind of business sense. There are other "hot" bars in Toronto that don't come with the shoddy experience.

I was lucky enough to get dinner reservations this past weekend for my birthday and enjoyed everything from start to finish. They are not officially open and crabby critics are already giving this place a bad rap! Manager Max made every detail from personally calling me to confirm my reservation to planning a beautiful bday dessert presentation. Food was fun and presentation a delight. Drinks after were fun with plenty of people watching. A great spot for young professionals. I too own a restaurant and know how hard it is to get things rolling... this place deserves support and a chance as they took the time to cover every detail in an attempt to entertain even our most fickle foodies & club goers....
