Many of Nectar's outré-graze-and-lounge fans were saddened when the resto-lounge dimmed its lights. Admittedly, the summer was always great time to brave the confirmed hipster snottiness of Nectar, dining out on the street-side patio with Adjey-inspired dishes and perhaps a glass of prosecco, watching the passers-by along Wellington.

But Nectar has since closed up shop. Call it the It Spot regeneration: one King West area Street restaurant closes, another quickly opens in its place. In this case, Nectar's suitably hip successor has quickly taken charge, freshly re-branded and released under the curious name Marben, with the aim of filling the long and narrow space once again.

While Marben has been touched up by Commute Homes (the same firm that put together Kultura and Colborne Lane), the brick and beam space still basically sports the same marble-accented soul that was Nectar's. Nonetheless, a handsome restaurant it is, with a clean, vaguely chamber-influenced look that supports the culinary theme it's aiming for.

Open 6 nights a week with local DJs spinning on weekends, the restaurant draws a crowd that's a late-night cornucopia of King West life: hipsters looking to start things off before hitting the clubs; destination diners looking to score an evening out; a loud but friendly mob of people on a performance high from doing the rounds.

Executive Chef Craig Alley has been recruited to handle the fare, though the dinner menu reads a tad formulaic. Appetizers include, for good and safe measure, Dungeness Crab Cakes, grilled asparagus with shaved asiago, and pepper beef rolls. But those beef rolls, fixed up with shaved reggiano, and wild arugula with balsamic, was among the better little starters I've come across of late.

I had the chance to finally try Marben for my best friends birthday and I have to say it lives up to all of the hype..When my party and I walked in the Door the host/manager Sam welcomed us with the greatest warmth and led us to our table the beautiful lit onix celebration table..about 3 minutes later Sam returned with a birthday present for my friend from the staff @ Marben what a great touch! Our Service by our server Lawrence was over the top he was real friendly quick knowable & provided us a ultimate dinning experience..The food was mouth watering I started off with the duck tacos and the black cod for my dinner both absolutely amazing!..The chef has some great skills and knows how to build a plate of wonderful flavors..None of my friends and I had been out in the city and wanted place to party after the staff had informed us that a DJ comes in and the party starts around 11 finding this information we decided to stay at Marben and must say it was one of the best Saturday nights I have had in a long time..Its a great feeling to be able to go somewhere with friends for an incredible dining experience and not have to rush out to go and line up at a club after dinner the party starts around you there an absolutely an a Amazing night..My Hands Down! to the Manager/Chef and all of the servers @ Marben

Last night I was at Marben for a friends birthday celebration. To be quite honest, the service and atmosphere were excellent, but the food quality was disgustingly bad. I had ordered the vegetarian option, and having eaten dinner earlier that night, plus appetizers at the restaurant, I really wasn't that hungry. So I asked our server if it was ok that my friend and I share the vegetarian meal, since it was pasta, and pasta can be quite filling. She said yes, with no questions asked. When we received our meal, I was shocked to see that there were only 2 pieces of ravioli, about 8 slices of mushrooms, and some spinach on my plate. Not only was this meal not acceptable to serve to two people sharing, it was not even acceptable to serve to a person eating it by them self! When the server asked if everything was alright, I told her that it tasted fine, but that I expected there to be a little bit more on the plate. She went and told the chef, and came back with the response that the ravioli are in place of the 'meat' in my dish, so I received 4 ounces like every other plate. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? A PASTA DISH CAN NEVER BE COMPARED TO A MEAT DISH. 4 ounces of steak with sides is enough food to fill one person, but 2 pieces of ravioli are not even enough to taste! I was actually embarrassed to be sitting in a restaurant where a person has the audacity to send that to a table. Even though I wasn't even hungry to begin with, if I had eaten that meal entirely by myself, it still wouldn't have been enough to satisfy my small appetite.
Needless to say, I will NEVER attend Marben again, or refer it to my friends - meat eating or not. The chef in charge of the kitchen clearly thinks his food is way too good since 2 bites are enough to satisfy! Give me a break.

My favourite King St West restaurant - the service is amazing, mouthwatering food and the atmosphere pisses all over any other resto-lounge I've been to in the city. For newbies to this place try the duck confit taco's (!!) and the Arctic Char - you wont be let down.

I went back to Marben for the second time and the food was even better then the first time. The Artic Char was by far the best dish I have had in a while. The Pork was little bit on the dry side but the remainder made up for it. The service was good.

If you want to be treated poorly before walking into a restaurant, this is the place to go! We reserved Marben's 4 weeks ago for a surprise party for a friend with attendees of over 60 people and dinner reservations. When calling all week to confirm, each time there were different information given as to where we would be seated for the special celebration table and time we also reserved. The night before the party, we gave them the benefit of the doubt and there sure was doubt. We weren't going to be given the table we reserved, the time, nor the cake and the owner of the restaurant takes over the space where are guest were going to be. This is not 10 to 15 people this is over 60 people who now know how Marben's treats their guests poorly. The owner needs to hire a more competent manager. They sure know how to take a reservation but don't know how to keep a reservation or a commitment.

Awful awful people. We had reservations to host a party there for approximatley 50 people. The night before, today the Friday, they called us and said that they have to cancel becuase the owner wants to have his own party. I can't belive they would do this and not care about their guests. I would never ever ever recomend the place. Still have no place to host the party and don't know what to do. How can they do this to their guests when we personally went in arranged everything?

We went to Marben for a birthday dinner. Overall, service was very friendly and accommodating. The decor was intimate, lighting extremely dark. It's unfortunate the food just didn't stand out. Many people in our party thought the dishes were over salted; it was the crabcakes, part of the foie gras, etc. As for the mains, they were okay. My lamb was good, not amazing. Two people who had ordered the pork thought it was tender but with zero flavour. We also questioned the side of super heavily battered onion rings! This is fine dining, is it not? As for dessert, we had a selection presented to us and again, good, but nothing to rave over. Drinks were nicely made. We had a nice evening, but I wish the food was more memorable for positive reasons!

My friends and I absolutely loved the food. The striploin was simply mouth watering. Excellent service. The lounge area was little cold but easily warmed up by good food and wine.
Looking forward to my next visit.

I think not, If you like over cooked fish followed by what tasted like a out of the box dessert then yes its great. All these reviews sound like people that work there. Sorry Marben your not even worth this review.

I went to Marben tonight for dinner after hearing of the review in the Globe and Mail. We were greated with smiles from the hosts and seated at the bar for cocktials. Lisa, our bartender was extremely friendly and when I ordered a martini she reccommended one of their signature martinis and it was great. After our cocktails were were seated at our table downstairs which seemed to be a bit less lively than upstairs but still very nice. Our server was Steve and he was excellent. Both myself and my guest are in the industry so we tend to be very picky when it comes to service just because we know better but he was great. We had the beet salad and asparagus salad to start and the striploin and black cod entrees. Both were mouth watering. The music is great!!! It's so nice to hear some funky music at dinner. We were still at our table at 11pm and by then the music was very loud so probably not a great first date place...well not for a later reso anyways.
We had a great night there and had to meet friends at another bar for a bday but will be back for sure to stay the entire evening. I will definately be telling friends to try Marben...thanks for a great night and both Steve and Lisa should be recognized for a great job!!

We went to Marben, as I was curious after this review. I also liked the space when it was Nectar. Alas, We were disappointed. The host was not friendly; was rather cocky when we checked in. We even had to wait an extra 15 minutes after our reservation time. They weren't busy that day and there were plenty of tables, so I don't understand why they made us wait. Some tables were not set up yet and there were many people waiting as well. Our dinner was great though.

All in all, all the staffers at Marben were just busy with themselves... sad, when the room was only at a third capacity.

This is the new HOT spot for sure! The wine and food was amazing--try the sirloin!! The atmosphere was awesome...it's the type of place you go to that you and your friends can enjoy a great dinner and then not have to worry about where you are going afterwards...the party comes to you! The DJ was phenomenal...great music--new/old (with a hip beat) and and everything in between! The patio is perfect with a spectacular view of the CN tower!
The staff is all very knowledgeable and friendly!
I will definitely be going back soon!!!
