There are so many people jumping on the "locavore" bandwagon nowadays that the movement has lost some of its hipster eco-cachet. Even so, it'll take more than a few poser Loblaws commercials to kill the concept altogether, especially in Toronto's trendy Parkdale neighbourhood. But Local Kitchen and Wine Bar is not an attempt to cash in on a passing fad; there's a real commitment to localism, not just in the restaurant's cuisine, but also in its design, hospitality, and everything in between.
Michael Sangregorio who co-owns Local with chef Fabio Bondi defines the restaurant's concept as three tiered: "local, almost local, and our parents' local." Despite being Italian in heritage, at heart the spot belongs to Parkdale. Walls are made up in historical pictures of the neighbourhood culled from the Toronto Archives (and made by a local artist) and a clothesline boasts clothes and conversation pieces from the restaurant's customers. "We may own the place," says Michael. "But the community runs it."
Local isn't meant to be a destination spot; instead it's an attempt to recreate the comfortable, laid-back vibe of a North American pub, but in the context of an Italian wine bar. With only 29 seats, a boar's head over the door, and plastic pop crates mounted on the walls as wine racks, no one's going to call the place pretentious. But unlike many of Toronto's cookie-cutter pubs, there's a real focus on quality.
The fare is quite simple, composed mostly of piattini (like Italian tapas). Since Local uses a "hundred mile menu", the fare changes based on what produce is fresh and in season, but it always includes four salads, two secondis, and about three or four pastas (all homemade and served within a couple of days).
The focus, however, is on the salumi (i.e. Italian charcuterie), cured in house and sourced directly from a farm in Stratford. Salumi meat and cheese platters run for about $15 (an are served up on repurposed slabs of tree trunks), while more adventurous diners can opt for a $50 Salumi Tasting, in which the servers will "bombard" you with food.

13 Reader Reviews | Charcuterie plate was delicious, the pasta was terrible.
For an "Italian" restaurant that was the worst gnocchi I've ever had. The consistency was poor and the sauce was uninspiring. The sauce for the pasta my boyfriend had was over salted. They should stick to meats and steer clear of pasta - it's nothing like the italian food I've experienced in Italy or Canada.

DO NOT GO HERE! The worst customer service I've ever encountered and I've been to many restaurants as my husband is a chef. We were told that our table for 2 would be about an hour and that they would call my husband's cell when our table was free. Went to a bar down the road to have a drink while we were waiting for the call and after an hour an a half we decided to give them a call to see how much longer it would be. They assured us it would only be another 15 minutes and they would call us and we never received a call! We wasted our whole night at a bar down the street where we ended up getting pub grub because by that point we were starving! A simple call to let us know that they were unable to accommodate our request would have been common courtesy so that we were not waiting all night! I'd sooner go to Union to have good local fare...

THEY TRY HARD , BUT REALLY NOTHING SPECIAL, SMALL PORTIONS, EXPENSIVE WINE LIST WITH NO REAL SELECTION OR VALUE TO SPEAK OF. VERY SMALL PLACE , NO MONEY SPENT ON THE INSIDE LOOKS CHEAP , AND FOR WHAT THEY CHARGE IT DOESNT ADD UP. BREAD WITH OIL WAS GOOD. WONT BE BACK.

Not much on the plate. Too much on the check.

I absolutely loved it. The food was a 10, the service was a 10 and the restaurant is cute as a button.

It's very intimidating opening up a new restaurant in such a far off (but great) area, but it looks and sounds like Local is golden.

What a charming place, and great food! We were in from out of town for one week and stumbled upon it while looking for a place for a light dinner. My only complaint is that it was so crowded. The owners were very friendly, even with being so busy. Highly recommended!

We can't say enough about the cute atmosphere......and by the way the food was fantastic! Top this off with some great atmosphere and you've got yourself a meal.

cute. And I'm truly glad Local opened. But... just too far away. Sorry, perhaps next time I'm out in those parts.

Sorry bub, there's already four "Locals" in this town, and even they're getting tired. Try a Thesaurus, for Christ's sakes.

I haven't eaten here as it isn't yet open but I have sampled some incredibly delicious dishes from both Bondi's and Sangregorio's previous lives. The two have a real love of food and it a real knack for not overcomplicating menu items. I am really looking forward to being one of the first patrons of Local Kitchen and Wine Bar.
