    Review by Brock Shepherd
From the loins of its long established parent, bar Mercurio (located practically across the street) L'Espresso is situated between the Bata Shoe Museum and the ROM, aimed straight at the student, faculty and tourist business alike.

The open-concept kitchen pumps out authentic Italian offerings of Panini, Tramezzini, salads and all day breakfast with free-range eggs. The wide & breezy space is strewn with marble tables a mahogany bar and a street side patio will be waiting with open arms and empty stomachs. - B.S.

Worst attempt at a Croque Monsieur I've ever experienced. Served on thin plywood-tough Ciabatta bread with no cheese on the outside. Cheap ham and a pitiful amount of cheese on the inside. So dry I had trouble chewing it without taking sips of my super expensive orange juice. Overall, a flavourless disaster. Take this piece of crap off the menu or learn how to make it porperly.

The eggs benedict was served barely lukewarm, scone hardly toasted at all.

Nice staff, but horrible, horrible failure on the food front.

We won't be back for brunch.

Unprofessional.Held a private party, of course, we had reservations.Manager suggested to serve starters so guests have something to eat while waiting for entrees. When party arrived, manager on duty asked if we would like to serve something else (not what we pre-ordered) for starters. This meant, nothing has been prepared for the reserved party.Starters came 45 minutes after guests have been seated.Entrees came another 45 minutes later.By the time the entrees came, a couple of our guests were leaving. Some even asked theirs to go.The party has been waiting 90 minutes in total when entrees were served.Booked the patio but party was held inside.Told this to the manager on duty, the reply was "that was not in my notes".No apologies. The temperature that day was 34C but the AC was not turned on, not even for mis-booking the party but just as a consideration for the guests. We agreed to offer only a couple of drink choices to our guests, this was not followed. And, to top it all, there was only one server for a party of 30.

Certainly, the martiniboys.com crew boasts bigger and much fancier cafe venues. But this storied Ave&Bloor hole-in-the-wall is still the classiest title of its ilk. Give it a shot!
