hat sounds like a reference from a Beach Boys hit is really the name of a Danforth resto. A product of the Restaurant Makeover renovation dream team, Kokkino’s new menu, designed by Four Seasons chef Lynn Crawford has local patrons rediscovering their love for the Greektown landmark. Contemporary Mediterranean dishes that rely heavily on Aegean influences are served in this sleek and sexy space - black and white modern design, with burnt wood tables and faux exposed brick accents. This is a nice change from the sea blue, stark white interiors of the Greek spots down the street and the Danforth location is always a bonus for a pre or post-dining stroll. No “Opa!” or smashed plates here – thankfully! Let's hope that the Restaurant Makeover investment paid off. - E.J. |

Recently watched Restaurant Make-over and Kokkino was being aired.
We were there 2 weeks ago on their Karaoke night. What a blast!
I can't tell you how much fun it was to hear people sing in different languages. The place was packed with beautiful looking individuals, dancing and socializing and having a great time. The drinks were amazing, especially with the price attached (Martini's were a steal). We went back a few nights later for dinner. The food was absolutely phenominal, especially the mezzes?!? (it's all Greek to me), the tapas! We are planning on hosting our Christmas Party there followed by a night of fun Karaoke.

What started out great - ended up in flames. The martinis at this place are delicious and well worth the $8. After that, however, prepare to be disappointed. With a restauarant not busy with only 10 tables going, it took a ridiculously long time to place our order, with our server not being familiar with the ingredients when we mentioned an allergy.
We had the steak and frites, and order it medium rare - and it was a glorious thick piece of lovely beef, charred and blackened beyond recognition. The frites were McCain fries and needless to say, the chef must have thought that the dimmed lighting would hide his inability to cook a piece of meat.
We showed the blackened meat to our server with obviously no pink in the middle whatsoever, and he assured us we would have another steak perfectly cooked, pronto.
The replacement steak was 1/2 the size of the original - and I know what frozen meat tastes like. This steak had been frozen at one point in its sad life.
Conclusion - if you want a place to eat bread and drink martinis, by all means, Kokkino is your spot.
If you want to order the most expensive dish on the menu - prepare to be horribly disappointed.
