Kalendar shines in a role it seems to have been working toward all its peaceful life, from its early days as a small coffee shop, an expansion that secured its footing as a competitive restaurant, and onward to gain the dubious distinction, year after year, as an irresistible mood-enhancer that has attracted saccharine-afflicted couples for over nine year s.Two little dining rooms, adorned with dark oak tiling and rough wood furnishings, feature a cute-as-a-button romantic scene throughout most of the room.
The ambitious spot works well on a number of levels, depending on what you’re coming here for: daytime cafe, evening cocktail bar and low-key restaurant, all wrapped up in a tender love story. We study all this through the eyes of love-struck couples throughout the room; small gatherings of secret business meetings, romantic liaisons and any other one-on-one gatherings that require extreme discretion.
You feel it in the air, the coziness of a room amid the frantic pace and sensory overload of College Street. Kalendar’s antique chandeliers, hardwood floors, eye candy at other tables along with a truckload of French Martinis should wipe out any regrets over a loser date or a cheating ex-mate.
Forget tonight - on a regular-run Saturday night it's tough enough to find a seat. At times, couples stand three deep around the dark wood bar area awaiting champagne cocktails, martinis and top-flight bubbly by the glass, including Taittinger La Francaise and Veuve Clicquot Brut. A crowd of 30-ish yuppies and silver foxes comes here regularly, many using Kalendar as their annual Valentine’s Day tryst.
"Kalendar is 'hands down ' the most romantic spot in the city,” says regular Dan Sherven, who comes here regularly with, or without, his girlfriend, Jill. "And we’ll be back here on Valentine’s, staking out our table. I have no choice that night is like Mother's Day -you have to go out or else you’re dead."

8 Reader Reviews | Definitely will not go back. Apart from the cozy atmosphere and decor the place as "restaurant" simply does not work.
The staff is impersonable and unhelpful - I cant say I've ever seen an "Italian-Indian fusion" style menu so a little insight/introduction would have gone a long way, rather than 3 different waiters continuously pressuring us to order from a menu we knew nothing about.
Also, nearby bar owners would be pleased to know that any "spill-over" traffic is highly discouraged - when told that a table would be available in "20 minutes or so" I mentioned that we'd have a drink at a bar nearby (rather than stand and wait awkwardly over people already having dinner).. the hostess explained that we would lose our spot in line if we left...
As for the food itself: I'm a more than a little curious about the freshness of ingredients - ordered the baked camembert-wrapped phyllo & it was on my table in under 2 minutes... hmmm... the other dishes were not even so memorable.
That pretty much summed up the experience: fast food quality, high-end pricing, and zero substance.

The atmosphere and look is incredible! I really really truly want to give this place 4 stars just for the way it looks! And summertime on the patio is so lovely.
However, there are a couple things about this place that make me hesitate about going back (although I have frequented a lot in the past, I am not really recommending this palce anymore). The food is honestly terrible. It is microwaved, unsalted, too salty, soggy...you name it, you can tell there is no care put into the food. Also the service is really substandard - a little bit of attitude, a little bit flippant.
I went there once with friends on a weeend in the evening - they only allowed us to sit in the seats closest to the door in the bar section even though we saw there were a couple tables available in the dining section because we were not dining. I am not really complaining about this (ok, a little!) but for me, the best part about being at this palce is the drinks. My friends and I would have dropped a couple bills even if we were not eating. Sometimes you need to see the forest from the trees?

Atmosphere was nice, service was good, food was poor and with a massive bill attached. Also, I don't really understand the theme: pseudo-italian-indian fusion? You're better off somewhere else.

Great atmosphere. Unpretentious yet classy place to dine.

Well, looking for a new place to dine and wine we came across Kalendar. Atmosphere, i'd give it an 8/10, that's what made us interested in the place. The drinks were good, the service was a little scary. OK, so the food...we ordered appetizer, salad, and pizza...when the food arrived, i was like, omg..that salad i ordered is $15 bucks warm apple shit...? The chicken wasn't fresh..if ya know what i mean? The portion was laughable, I actually started cracking jokes about it the whole time i was there. The pizza my boyfriend ordered sucked as well! Can you say flattened naan bread with veggies and a small portion of chicken. Did i mention the faint touch of curry or indian something? Finally, the waitress that passed early on picking up our plates after the appetizer asked me while i was still eating.."Are you finished?" while i was still chewing!! The bill was a whooping $75 dollars!! Seemed like all we had were appetizers. We are now going to order from our fav indian spot "Ghandi" for our real dinner. $75 for an empty stomach, we came in there hungry, and left hungry.

Wow! What a find. One of the best meals I've had in ages. Went with hubby and other couple. Started with a generous portion of warm apple goat cheese salad. Then lamb with mango and cranberry chutney, accompanied by mashed sweet potatoes and a very passable array grilled veggies. Friends had soup(?) with pretty swirl of sourcream on top, and Tai salad for starters followed by that hunk of a veal chop. My husband had one of those rolos. My apple salad was DEVINE. Lamb was tender and extremely tasty. Only complaints were that my friend's soup wasn't cold enough as were my mashed sweet potatoes. We were too full for dessert, but they looked marvellous and well sized.
One other issue bothered us...although wait staff was efficient, we found them rather icey. One even loudly threw down a menu where they are kept infront of the window. If the owner is reading this, please remember that a smile and small pleasantries go a long way. Your servers would benefit in the end when tips are doled out.
I'm a tough customer to please, but this one passed with flying colours. Can't wait to return so hope there's consistency with another great meal in store.

I love Kalendar - it's one of my favourite restaurants for many different reasons: affordable food that is fantastic, tasty and reliably good. Great atmosphere (especially if you love to eavesdrop - the tables just cry out for it). I've been here a lot with my boyfriend, and with some girlfriends - we've always had a great time.
