French bistro is rarely cause for celebration, especially one that been around for over a decade. But what makes Joy stand out is not only its food pedigree – Joy was recently taken over by Peter Brauti, Scott Manicom (The Kitchen and Two Cats) and Steve Pelton (of TIFF) - but that it pumps out one of the best brunches in the Leslieville area.
With that range of experiences and connection, you can be assured these guys know how to have a great time. (And their opening party proved it, with hundreds of young professionals boozing and schmoozing in every square inch of the place.)
Feeling that the Leslieville area was one of the last in affordable downtown property, (how sad is it that that phrase has become oxymoronic?), the group scooped up the place with the hopes of tapping into the late 20- and early 30-year old co-eds migrating eastward.
What is noteworthy about the location is the camaraderie of the community; area dwellers eager to get to know the new owners. "There have been a few nights on the patio," he says, "where I have seen two separate groups start at tables next to each other, and by the end of the night, they've pushed their tables together!"
And it's not necessarily because they had been drinking for the last four hours. With a great space to work with, including three patios, a dining room and an upstairs bar (Over Joy Lounge), Joy is an ideal summer hang, now made even greater with the permanent opening of the east patio and the serving of Sangria and pails of Coronitas.

16 Reader Reviews | This place is a bit pricey, but well worth it. The food was perfectly cooked and the service was spectacular. I would put Joy Bistro against some of the finest restaurants in the city.

Cute as a button. But it really is just the same as it was before. Even the menu is the same. I guess I was hoping or a bit of change with the new ownership.

Great spot! Excellent service, and oh yeah... Great food! I would usually prefer a place with at least a few meat options, in case I was in the mood, but within the genre of vegetarian cuisine this place rocks! Don't worry about going home hungry, the servings are ample, although I would suggest an appetizer to compliment your main dish if you have a big appetite.

Though I ate very little, I enjoyed it. The cute ambiance made the meal. The service was a bit delayed, yet it was accepted due to the animated waitstaff. A bit pricey but a great place to relax and have a great meal.

Nothing has changed? I see that the "hip" new owners are in the house... but nothing - menu, decor, furniture - has changed one iota.

This is a tough review because Joy used to be one of my favourite places until my last visit. I've always had great food and service there, but on my visit the food was just so-so and we had a HORRIBLE waiter. He had that attitude and look of "what do you want?" like we were bothering him to be at his table. Hopefully it was a one time thing.

Delicious! I love the ambiance, the food and the staff. They used to have some competition with Brioche, but I think Joy is the overall winner.

When I lived in Toronto, this was my favorite local restaurant. The food is excellent, the restaurant is quaint and the waiters are great and ooh la la! I've had just about everything there and I miss it. .

I saw some impressive reviews for this restaurant and I decided to bring my family here Friday. I asked around and it seemed like this is more a place for younger adults to hang out but I decided to try it anyways. The decor is sophisticated and modern and they have long tables and bar-style seatings to encourage strangers to talk to each other.
The food was excellent. They have a good selection of small and large plates; so if it's your first time there, you might need some time to decide what to order. Overall, the food was very original and the portions were just nice. Most of all, it was not expensive for such quality food. I was very impressed and I will definitely be back.
