The rebranding of Yonge and Dundas Square to Toronto Life Square has brought with it two new restaurants. Ironically there is nothing "Toronto" about these places. Joining Denver chain Chipotle Mexican Grill is the all-American diner chain Johnny Rockets. It's all about '50s style Americana here with unhealthy items such as milkshakes, cheeseburgers, and ketchup in bottles.
I assumed '50s nostalgia went out of style with the admission that the '50s were a time of female oppression and volatile international relations, but it seems the Archie Comics vision of life is still alive. Come grab a seat at one of the classic red booths, put a record on the jukebox, and pretend that you're the Fonz. -R.T.

12 Reader Reviews | I'm sad to read all these awful reviews. I've been to the original Johnny Rockets on Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, several times in the early 90's. Now THAT place was a real diner! Too bad it's turned into a typical franchise. Maybe we can cross our fingers that Ruby Tuesday makes its way up to TO? Now that place was good!

I've had some bad resto experience, but this was HANDS DOWN the worst dining experience I've ever had. The place was horribly managed... Sunday afternoon - the place was packed and they had one girl on the floor... Poor thing didn't have a chance! The food was terrible - and terribly expensive for what you got! We were there as a table of 6 and refused to pay for anything (it was that bad). The quality of the food was at a 1 out of 10. To top it all off - when i got home my clothes and hair stunk of food/grease!
I strongly recommend that you DO NOT visit this restaurant.. Places like this shouldn't have the right to remain open:: Total tourist trap!

Also, Frans is in the area. Not really worth the visit, but it is a diner....

Allan Davies - The Senator, around the corner on Victoria, is "the" original '50s diner. Check it out. Very cool indeed.

I stopped at the Johnny Rockets at Yonge-Dundas for a milkshake a few weeks ago. I go there often (sometimes, as part of team events at work). This time, the milkshake was very poorly made. There was no whipped cream or cherry, the glass was a little more than half-full of shake, and with the overflow, it only came to 3/4 full glass. I mentioned this to the waiter and he became very aggressive, saying that this is the way it's done at their establishment and that he would need the table back so I had to leave. It was very bizarre because I've never been treated so poorly before.
I decided to visit the Johnny Rockets website to describe my experience. I used the customer service form and a couple of days later, I got a reply from standard webbot email back from Brett Babick, VP Operations. I did a quick websearch and realieze that this response is most likely automatically-generated as other people have received the same one (word for word) when they submit their own complaints. The email had no forwarding address and when I tried to reply, it bounced back.
It looks like Johnny Rockets is not concerned about their customers' feedback. Its too bad because I will never return to this location, not by myself, with friends, nor will future office group lunches/events be held here.

Small portions, overpriced horrible frozen burgers with sickly sweet buns. $8.00 for a burger with no sides is obscene. McDonald's burgers are much better (and that's saying a lot). Would not return or recommend.

Best burgers in Toronto. Fresh juicy big patties and fresh cut produce.

Not worth it.
The burger was tasty (and greasy) but at ~$8.00 before tax and tip without any sides, it's very hard to justify.

GOOD BAD!
Thought it would a great fun 50's experience.
WRONG!
BAD TASTING FOOD (actually no taste) and EXPENSIVE
$5.99-$7 for a frozen burger, with no fries or anything!
they even managed to screw up a grilled cheese!!
Service was good though, but they food is not worth the money.
Save your money the cute 50's experience is not worth your money.

Awful. Supersmall portions, expensive meals, bland tasteless burger.
Don't go there.
Perhaps the malts are better, but at $5.99 a pop, I'll try that on another visit, if I ever step foot in there again.
