If you’re serious about your coffee, then it’s time you steered your attention toward the next bike courier you see, and follow him - over rough terrain, avoiding oncoming traffic, through bank lobbies - to his unofficial headquarters. It’s a given that you’ll wind up - perhaps not right away, but eventually - on Parliament Street, just south of Carlton.
Now, a coffee shop has to be superlative for us to suggest it's worth stalking a messenger over, but the now-classic Jet Fuel Coffee makes the recommendation easy, especially if you're not afraid of coffee with attitude.
"Do one thing and do it well" could be the mantra of Jet Fuel. The high-voltage experience begins right at the doorway, where clusters of smokers hang loose, lattes in hand, bantering at a feverish pitch. Step into the raw coffee shop and you’re greeted with a small, pumping art-gallery-ish space, offering simple, quality coffee, and not much more. You can get a Jet Fuel coffee (a latte), read the papers (there's plenty of room), and just chill. It's the brainchild of John Englar, whose aim is to pare things down and to have a little fun on top of it.
Jet Fuel wasn't born overnight. Jet Fuel started life in the late eighties as a sandwich truck, servicing the film industry. It was the film crews that named Johnny-Jet Fuel-Englar. Later, Englar’s first coffee bar location (that didn’t bear license plates) would be a 200 square-foot coffee bar within a bike store. The size of a postage stamp with two monstrous speakers on each wall. "It was like walking into a set of headphones!" says Englar.
When Jet Fuel opened in the current location in ë92, it was instantly a cool place to hang out, sanctioned by local couriers that made it their unofficial headquarters. But you didn't have to be a messenger to enjoy the nonconformist ambiance, good caffeine; at here, the emphasis was on slackerism and customers who knew each other’s regular time-slot.

26 Reader Reviews | Amazing place to hang out, especially to get some work done. I occasionally write and this is my favourite place to kick back and get in the zone. The creative atmosphere and unique character of Jet Fuel is inspiring and truly motivational. The shop reflects a slight rebellious attitude, reminding me of a "beat generation" type of feel. And last but definitely not least, it's the best coffee I've ever had. Come on out!

One of the very few things I miss about Toronto...a cap and a smoke in the back patio. Yeah, and a roti, and some Indian food, and a couple folks, including cranky Johnny. And my commute from the Mills to Cabbagetown was always good. Otherwise, fuck that town. I'm never coming back.

They're not really rude. Just dealing with the masses. I never really thought about it much (and I'm there every day). But I'm rude tood.

Jet Fuel's staff have a reputation for being rude and unwelcoming. I was warned before I went there, but I thought, how bad could it be?
Went there on the weekend and then ended up walking out empty handed.
Why do so many Torontonians just love being shit upon by cranky hipsters? Face it JetFuel - you're a cafe - not a nightclub. I'd much prefer to go where people are courteous and helpful.

Ive been a regular here for years.
Coffee is great but the attitude of their staff is... HORRIBLE !!!
The staff across the street at the new Starbucks are always happy and very nice, and NO ATTITUDE....
D'ont see them employed there much longer...so long hipsters behind the coffee counter !!!

The staff is straight up rude. They are serving coffee, not a life line. Drop the attitude, it is unwarranted. I don't need a side of pretentious with my coffee.

The espresso is ok but it's slightly on the mild side. I would not rank this place highly. I don't think a place that sells only espresso, but no single origin coffee, and does not roast their own beans, could be truly be called a great coffeehouse. Torontonians who call this place great are simply pretentious and probably don't know a thing about coffee. You want a great coffeehouse? Try Cafe Artigiano/49th Parallel in Vancouver or the Roasterie/Grumpy's in Calgary.

Coffee sucks, service sucks, attitude sucks. They could learn a thing or 2 from Cherry Bomb. The best coffee in the city served by cheerful people who don't care if you're a regular or not.

Not very excited about this place, except that they allow dogs and they have cheap lattes.. hahah!

You can't get around the fact that this place has bad service. The coffee is great but the attitude is horrible! I don't understand how a barista can think so highly of themselves that they can treat others like shit with no regard. Doesn't good service mean anything anymore?
12. Evo's Review :: February 11, 2009 Evo's Rating: Stars |
My girlfriend and I go there regularly. Bad service? Hardly. It's a "don't like it don't come here" attitude and if you can deal with that, the staff are great. A lot of enthusiasm, great music and $3 pints of double espresso shots. Starbucks? Pah, I can buy two pints at Jet Fuel for one cup of warm milk at Starbucks.
They're freshly made lemonade kicks serious arse as well.

This place is truly a staple in toronto. The vibe is totaly what a coffee shop should be and he does an excellent job with the art work the place always looks like a high class gallery

If this is the best of Toronto coffee scene then I am moving back to Vancouver. BTW, what's the association with bike couriers and great coffee? I guess they must be more educated and have better taste than the rest of us - go figure!

Love this place...a Toronto institution...if you want reliable service and efficient product delivery, go to Starbucks. If you want atmosphere, eclectic music, great (and cheap) lattes in a place like no other...go to Jet Fuel. Its simple

They are called "Jet Fuel Coffee" but they don't serve coffee - only lattes and espressos. Manned by hipsters who don't know anything about high quality quality coffee. Pretentious and disappointing.
