    Drew Rowsome
The matronly woman at the front desk of the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art warns: if the museum galleries are visited on the way to lunch at Jamie Kennedy at the Gardiner then admission - $12 - must be paid on the way out. A quick left, careful to avoid setting foot in the galleries, takes me to the staircase and elevator that leads to the restaurant.

*Scott Vivian has replaced Bruce Leslie as chef de cuisine at Jamie Kennedy at the Gardiner.

I hear the restaurant immediately. It might be the contrast with the monastically quiet displays of exotic pottery or it might be that the restaurant is very loud. Before mounting the first step - two flights below - a steady din of conversation can be heard. It grows louder with every step I climb.

The restaurant itself is surprisingly small and consists of only fifteen to twenty tables arranged in an L-shape around a sleek black bar. The vaulted ceilings are as tall as the floor space is wide, allowing the room to feel more spacious than it actually is. To the right, there is a slightly more expansive, glass-enclosed room, which is opened for larger crowds. On this occasion, the adjacent room is sealed off by sliding wooden panels for a private function. A large window frames the kitchen station, which churns out Sri Lankan hoppers, and even on a grey Toronto day you’ll find the room flooded with light.

I have never experienced such a disappointing lunch - January 14, 2007. My husband had the hamburger which looked pathetic sitting on that large white plate. It was just a little bigger than a disk of deep fried chickpeas that you would find in a falafel. It also lacked any kind of seasoning and the condiments served with it were equally unexciting. I had curried shimp in the hopper and apparently it was "more like an entry serving" than some of the other items on the menu. I can't imagine how small the other items must be! My entry had only three (3) very small (half of my baby finger in size) shrimps in the whole dish. The condiments that were served alongside were dry as if they had been sitting out in the air for a couple of days. We did not have wine with lunch because of the price tag ($15.00) a glass, but we each enjoyed a beer ($7.00 each I believe). Although we ordered different beers initially (a lager and a pale ale), we were later informed by the hostess who offered to help us when we asked for our waitress, that they only served one kind of beer(a lager) only to come back again with a different story - that yes, they did have a pale ale as well as a lager. We were confused!

The room is cold, there is no artwork and although we were told that we were lucky to get a table because of a cancellation, a good number of tables were empty. Why then we were seated in a dark corner by the restrooms?
