There comes a time in one's life where they know they’ve met the one. Usually unexpected, this moment produces a once-in-a-lifetime, eye-opening reflection that prepares you for a future with your beloved. Teary eyes (it’s not the onions) and a feeling of joy overwhelm the senses, while you realize all relationships (or mistakes) of the past must be nullified. When it comes to steakhouses, this can be a painful endeavour. No longer will you be able to tap The Keg for a sizzling night of prime beef, and of course you must officially break up with Ruth's Chris (try to avoid the drive-bys, or it’ll only increase the pain). Fortunately, Jacobs & Co. is worth severing all ties to your steakhouses of yore, and a committed future together equates to harmonious carnivore bliss.
 Since the days of Roxy Blu, this Brant Street space has seen quite the urban renovation with the addition of the Brant House, and nearby Brassaii down on King. Subway and taxi transportation to the former nightspot has been replaced with valet parking that signals the sharp-dressing suits are confidently claiming the ‘hood as their own. A few upstart restaurant attempts in the club kid's old haunt have fizzled (the short lived Fumetti, and the equally short lived 8 Restolounge before it), but Jacobs and Co. promises to sizzle (their steaks, at the very least).
John Tsoumaris (Brant House Group), Peter Tsebelis and Gus Giazitzidis (Brassaii) and Amar Singh (the original owner of the space when it was Roxy Blu), with designer Marc Kyriacou, have transformed the former party space into a high-end (reservation-only) steak emporium worthy of Yorkville standards. If you’ve got the buck in the bank, this emporium of red meat will not disappoint.
After reluctantly tossing the keys of your Porsche to the eager valet, you begin the Jacobs & Co. experience underground. More specifically, you begin at the restaurant’s swanky subterranean lounge, that’s complete with a smiling piano man seamlessly running his fingers up and down the keys. If Sammy Jr. and Frank Sinatra were still around, it’s a fair assumption they’d be hanging out at the bar. Leather club chairs and almost-too-comfy bar stools (pace yourself!) evoke a feeling of ‘50s class within the space, enhanced by low lighting and a (handsome) bartender offering Jack on the Rocks (Frank’s favourite drink of course).
Once your reservation has been confirmed, the maître d' escorts diners from the dim underworld up a slate staircase to the glowing second level (for some, this transcendence is the closest they'll come to entering heaven). A completely different atmosphere awaits where a glass-enclosed steak-aging room greets you at the top. Please refrain from addressing the aged-steak within the glass in an audible voice, though eying it up and down with a discreet internal monologue is acceptable; “Oh hello there, you sexy 32-days aged piece of Wagyu Beef tenderloin… perhaps you’d like to join me for dinner?”

51 Reader Reviews | My first experience at a Jacobs!! OMG. Meat lover's paradise. Everything was amazing. The Wagyu is the best. I wish Iived in Toronto (I'm from Vancouver) and money was never a concern so that I could go here more often.

With a recommendation from a local they suggested we should check this place out for dinner during our stay.
Over the past week it seems steak is going for over $70. to my surprise they had a steak special at $45. hell yeah! i'll take that! this was the best Rib eye i have ever had, i swear! and the fillet mignon was the most tender meat i have had in a very long time.

The food was good but not necessarily better than other steak houses I've been to.

Jacob's an experience. Dinner was three hours, so allow enough time. Only thing that prevents me from frequenting Jacob's and Co. is the cost. Perfect for a special occasion, wish I could afford it more often.

Classic TGIF steak house type place. I really do not understand why people eat here *except* that it is really easy to get reservations. All the food was average. Overcooked, tough steak; small bland clams; predictably boring bread; drown everything in oil or deep fryer. The best part? Big table, easy conversation. Service is good. The food is all just really average (just I say that already?).

Excellent, well presented and delicious food as usual from jacob and co. Although we are a neigbour and a bit biased we think this is certainly one of the better spots in the area. It isn't cheap but it is worth the premium prices.

I read all the previous reviews and wonder where some people keep their taste buds? (I shall not answer that question). I have eaten there four times and the experience has always been outstanding. If more people cut down on their alcohol intake prior to dining I am sure they would appreciate it more. Interestingly, I was there the night Jane Craig and her "drunken" friends were. Sadly, I witnessed first-hand how rude was one of her group was to the owner. Slurring his words...Disgusting. If I were the owner it would please me no end to not have that type back
7. Philip Kay's Review :: October 21, 2009 Philip Kay's Rating: 4 Stars |
Porterhouse steak for 4 came out extremely charred on the surface, and the plate served it was as black as the meat itself. However, the meat was still pretty tender and not over cooked. Highly recommend the french onion soup, which was tasty but not salty.

It was terrible!! I've been to Jacobs before and was wowed by the service and food. This time though it was so incredibly disappointing. I was there with 7 other people for a work dinner and I was embarassed that I had picked the restaurant. Our initial drink order took 25 minutes because the server served us one drink at a time. We had to ask for bread because it wasn't served until way after our salads. Then we had to ask for our meal because we were waiting for so long (we sat down at 7 pm and didn't get our entrees until 9:20 pm). My $72 wagyu was overcooked and needed salt/seasoning, the twice baked potato was so sour it tasted spoiled. And then it took forever to get dessert. I won't be going back
9. Jane Kraig's Review :: October 09, 2009 Jane Kraig's Rating: 1 Stars |
Absolutely, beyond any doubt, the worst piece of steak I have ever had. It was cold, tough, and indigestible. However, this not unusual for Vancouver.
10. Craig Kelly's Review :: September 19, 2009 Craig Kelly's Rating: 1 Stars |
I had very high expectations as the reviews were good, but was not impressed with the food. My wife ordered wagyu and it was very dry. I am sure they just messed it up (which happens), but I expected more from a place like this. The sauce for my Rib Eye was nothing to write home about, also expected much more. Neither of us finished our food. To top it all off our (very small two person) table wobbled. Just not what I expected from a place where I dropped $480 bucks. There was one highlight in our meal and that was the bread. I could of ate that all night.

Man oh man! I can't remember the last time I gave out 4 stars to a restaurant! This steakhouse is one of the most amazing places I've been to! Pricey but very worth it! The 50 bucks per person is worth every penny! Jacobs brings back to life the carnivore in you!
Another piece of advice: don't get too carried away with the salad bar because you're gonna need a lot of room if you want to try the meats, which is basically what you're there for, I hope? =]
12. Terrance Prentice's Review :: June 25, 2009 Terrance Prentice's Rating: 4 Stars |
Maybe it was a bad night, or my taste in steak has been well developed from experience (steak is my favorite meat), or my expectations had been raised too high from the stellar reviews of Jacob's, but the food was merely passable when I visited for a recent dinner.
On the plus side, valet parking was actually well done and worth it if you need to get in and out in a rush.

Gin Martini. Wagyu Beef tenderloin. My Birthday. Are you kidding? Oh course it was spectacular. This a grown-ups joint. No hipsters with their hair and text thumb fatigue. Pleasant conversation. Attentive waiters. No tv's on the wall. Perfection.

My comments are in relation to the Trevor Ogle group "stag" dinner last evening. I'm the father of the groom (the guy who paid for the predinner drinks). The entire evening was superb! The attentive service by all, including the bartender (whose name I don't remember), somelier (who permitted us to first taste a couple of wines), and especially our waiter (I believe it was Mark - I hope I'm correct here), was greatly appreciated. Everyone's dinner was cooked to perfection - your steaks are great, and not overly priced when you compare their quality with some of the places my wife and I have been to. Thank you all.
PS. I've told my wife that I owe her a dinner with you.

If steak is your passion, this is the place for you. Opened
by the Brassaii guys about a year ago features old-school attributes. Before you ask, there are also some fine meat dishes that are also cooked to perfection.

Great steakhouse. Bad attitude. Rich, melt-on-your-tongue A5 Kobe beef — the real deal, imported from Japan — will run you nearly two hundred bucks, but it'll also blow your mind.
19. Amy Fishbourne's Review :: February 16, 2009 Amy Fishbourne's Rating: 2 Stars |
I LOVED this restaurant experience! We went for a pre-valentines day dinner and had a wonderful time. Servers, hostess, etc all made us feel welcome and special. The decor is simple and elegant, somewhat like the food. We found our steak second to none (6 oz tenderloin for only $34) and the sides tasty but not out of this world. Little extras we received were a chocolate truffle at the end of our meal (we did not order dessert) and also a gorgeous muffin to take home made that afternoon by the chef. Wine selection was also fabulous. It's our new favourite steakhouse.
20. Anonymous's Review :: February 15, 2009 Anonymous's Rating: 4 Stars |
This place is way over hyped. We waited 45 mins for our reservation with little attention. Yeah, it was a cool scene with Bentley's and SUVs parked out front, but other than that there are few other redeeming qualities. The steak was overdone and stringy. Sides were good, but didn't make up for the subpar main dish. Overall, very disappointed.

THis place is the WORST! PLease go somewhere were they know how to cook a steak! THe salt levels are through the roof! GARBAGE! This place has a long way to go to reach HYS, Ruth Chris, Octagon or even Barbarians! The servers are rude, they cut into conversations and actually are quite rude about it! ITS JUST PLAIN HORRIBLE!! go some were else!
22. BIG John's Review :: January 19, 2009 BIG John's Rating: Stars |
We showed up without a reservation but managed to get good seats. Had the 6oz Wagyu with the root vegetable sides. Really good steak, but not $75 good. I could get an entire tenderloin from Costco and have about 10 similar meals for the same price. Service was excellent, and the people watching was definitely top notch.

Good steakhouse. I've been here about half a dozen times. I've never had a bad experience with the food here, or the service. I prefer this over Morton's and Ruth's Cris.
24. John T.'s Review :: January 01, 2009 John T.'s Rating: 4 Stars |
Great steak place - sides are solid and the wine list doesn't suck. Comparatively speaking, there are a few steak places in Toronto that are better for me but this place does not disappoint. Only drawback is that its a bit more buttoned up than I'm used to. But definitely a winner. Love the space....
25. Craig Waters's Review :: December 29, 2008 Craig Waters's Rating: 3 Stars |
The food is above average, service excellent, but the chairs were uncomfortable, atmosphere a little stiff (picture lots of 50 yr old men with 24 yr old blonds), and the valet staff make a comment to us when we tipped them only $5. Parking is pretty much valet parking only in this King/Portland neighborhood - and Jacket not really required.
26. Jason B Lamb's Review :: November 05, 2008 Jason B Lamb's Rating: 3 Stars |
Frankly, we were expecting to be blown away by the food, but that didn't exactly happen. Maybe it's time to lower our standards. Our table ordered the real deal - Wagyu Beef tenderloin. All fairly delicious, but not over-the-top. Nice design though.
27. Janice Ian's Review :: October 15, 2008 Janice Ian's Rating: 3 Stars |
I would like to give 3.5 stars, but that's not an option, so I've rounded up. I thought the food was excellent. The decor reminds me of a Hilton. The service was very good and the timing was perfect. I think it's a little too expensive compared to the other steak restaurants in the city. We paid $400 for dinner for two, one wine pairing, and two other drinks.
28. Frank Berry's Review :: October 13, 2008 Frank Berry's Rating: 3 Stars |
Exceptional. Fine dining and fine service. Worth every penny (although, truth be told, I didn't pay.) Only downside (not enough to lose a star, though) is that you have to travel quite a distance to park. But if Chef wants me to walk down a dark street to get to him, so be it.
29. Trent D'arcy's Review :: October 08, 2008 Trent D'arcy's Rating: 4 Stars |
WOW! If you want a good steak, this is definitely the place to have one. Based on my experiences at Jacobs over the last few months, this place never disappoints. The various cuts of Wagyu my friends and I have had are incredible. Another must is the Caesar salad made tableside.
This spot definitely ranks up there with the Cut’s, STK’s and Craft Steak’s of the world.
30. Anne S's Review :: September 11, 2008 Anne S's Rating: 4 Stars |
Pound per pound one of the better steak house for the price. Jacobs cuts are hearty portions and you can not go wrong with their prime rib. My butcher recommended this place and I see why.
31. Richard Gordon's Review :: September 04, 2008 Richard Gordon's Rating: 4 Stars |
Jacobs and Co. is good overall, but I feel that after going to other similar rstaurants in the city, that there are better steakhouses. In general I usually order ribeye (or sometimes porterhouse). Shall try again - but when I'm in the mood for steak, I need perfection.

I am only giving it 3 stars due to the food. The ambience great, service amazing but disappointed when we ordered the Wagyu, however, the wine service was AMAZING! I don't know maybe because there are so many steak houses, I found it just average.

Through the years I've entertained many clients at Morton's,Harbour 60,Barberian's et al and was reasonably excited at a colleagues suggestion of a fairly new steakhouse on the power scene.
I was not disappointed.The dry-aged steaks are the best in the city...by a longshot.It's been a few weeks since dinner and I'm still reminiscing about the Wagyu cut that I had.A client has e-mailed me about the experience which is unusual.We all(there were 5 of us) had different steaks and we agreed with the assessment that they were the best we had ever had.
The side dishes were a little disappointing but I don't go to a steakhouse for creamed spinach.
The service was exemplary.Polished but still charming and fun.What a difference from stuffy and occasionally irritating Harbour 60!
Well done Jacobs.May I seem presumptuous and call you the new king of Toronto steakhouses.I'll be back...and soon!

I have never submitted a review before but it would be remis not to tell the truth about this overrated experience. I frequent new restaurants often and I think Jacob & CO is a waste of time. Besides the caesar salad made at our table, everything else was mediocre. The steak was quite good but def not the best I've had in our city. The cobb salad as well as the sides we shared were less than memorable. The beefsteak tomatoes were shriveled and dry and even the 'famous' duck fat fries were just average. If you ever get a chance to get to the US, try Prime 112 which I have afeeling Jacob & Co may have been trying to mimick...nice try, but not even close.

The experience was a little bit frustrating. I called in for reservations for 7:30pm, and when I got there they told me they'd given me 8:30. No struggle to make me happy, only the assurance that I'd get a table at (sigh) 8:30. We had drinks and ordered insanely priced appetizers. We finally got our table, at 8:30 as the restaurant had decided we had indeed made our reservation. I'd like to go back. I just have to start investing better and exercise my options when the market is good before that happens. - Dan

If you've got the stretchy pants, my friends, this is the occasion in which to bust 'em out. You're going to need them at Jacob's, especially if you're the sort whose eyes never seem to keep pace with her appetite, ahem ahem. Jacob&co does steak right, right now, and right in time. And you owe it to yourself to check to see what the fuss is about. One warning though: It's $$$$$!

Morton's can SUCK IT...Ruth's Chris can LICK IT...and The Keg' can SCREW IT... Jacob's & Co. is the BEST thus far in Toronto. The prices are NOT reasonable - but considering the portions you get (which is inclusive of two sides) makes for a great meal. Cheers!

Well, the fries were the worst part. The steaks were great but there are places like harbour sixty, prime (which was very similar), etc.
The service was okay, but he seemed nervous which made me feel unsure.
The wine expert was very odd and we wondered if he might have taken something to help him through his day.
Not a terribly exciting experience for what it costs. I just kept thinking, if I am paying this much, shouldn't I be dazzled?

My opinion is largely based on my many experiences at the various steak houses in Toronto. Harbour 60 is the place to beat in my opinion. The Harbour steaks, service, sides, wine list are all excellent although many wines are priced with an outrageous mark-up.
That being said, Thuet serves some awesome hunks of house dry-aged steak and there is always room for a Morton steak.
Jacobs fell short on many fronts. I will try it again in the new year hoping for improvements. But the biggest missing element, for me, may never arrive...a BIG THICK JUICY STEAK! One can easily taste the quality but in my opinion it is lost on these thin slices. Every high-end steak house needs a cowboy cut or 24-28oz rib steak bone-in. Taking a chunk home in a doggy bag may be necessary, but atleast you get to dine on a THICK JUICY STEAK with the tastiest meat next to the bone. The Harbour rib steak is outstanding.
The Jacobs sides were boring. After searching to find something tempting enough to order we decided on the duck fat fries, mushrooms and mashed potatoes. The fries seemed to be well cooked but mysteriously they lacked any punch whatsoever. They were dull. The mushrooms were good but in the table's opinion far too rich. The mashed potatoes were OK.
The server was unable to answer our meat questions which was a real surprise. However it was nice that he went to the kitchen to find out whether or not the rib steak was cut thick.

This is a "keeper". I had been once previously and there were flaws, mostly restricted to the service. However, the food was exceptional. The second visit was a delight. The service had improved where it was needed and the food, again, was exceptional. To be sure "it aint cheap" but the sheer delight of biting into the most succulent beef in the world (instant addiction I call it)is worth every penny.
