Il Gusto might seem like one of the least promising restaurants on the College strip. Smacked on the corner attached to a nondescript block, it is basically an informal Italian restaurant disguised as a French Bistro. With Neo-Palladian windows, raw wooden tables and a minimal bistro décor, luckily, it’s on a bright corner.

Like Café Margaux before it, it is still a small space, just 50 seats inside and an extra 50 more on the patio. However, there’s something so personal and passionate about this effort, you really can’t help but be charmed.

The strange but fragrant dishes everybody seems to adore bear little resemblance to the food listed in the menu. Il Gusto’s food tends to be elegant, almost ladylike, with all the sort of seasonality you might expect from a rural joint located a few hundred yards from the best market in Southern Italy, and careful, restrained presentations.

The 6oz Cajon flatiron steak on a bed of mixed greens immediately caught my eye, and indeed was a healthy-sized started, grilled to a perfect medium rare and spiced too. Conned by the sound of the bacon-wrapped jalapenos ($6.95) and an order of glistening calamari Fritti, it was a little homespun and evidently, just not enjoyable. Other courses proved to be more interesting and unexpected with dishes such as the cultured mussels in a tomato broth ($7.95) and a baby spinach salad with roasted pine nuts ($7.90) were quite adequate.

For the mains, the process was a slow one, which is fine with something like the veal scaloppine ($15.95), but is less successful with a butter-baked salmon ($15.95) as it leaves the fillet soft and rubbery. A good bet is the marinated rosemary lamb chops and the scaloppine served with herbed mushrooms and green onions, does a bit more justice.

This is now our fourth visit and the food has improved. Unfortunately the prices also seem a little higher so the value is hard to judge. Certainly, the changes are welcome and we have every intention to return.

I am surprised by the negative reviews. I have been here three times in the last 4 months and enjoyed the food each time. They also have a great deal during the week- $15 for a fixed course dinner with a house salad, pasta of your choice and vreme brule. Give this place a go! It is quiet and staff are pleasant.

Lets hope that I have better command of the English language than those writing previous reviews.

My wife and I both arrived without booking and found the atmosphere charming. The restaurant wasn't trying to be pompous, but down to earth. We both ordered pizza and although there was a wait of about 20 minutes, we took this to mean the food was being freshly prepared. We were not disappointed. After having a delicious dessert and a coffee, we asked for the bill. Our only complaint was that we had been mischarged, with the waitress only charging us for one dessert when in fact we ate two. With this adjusted and paid for, we left. The service was efficient without being overbearing, even though the restaurant was full. The food was extremely good value. Many of the other clientele appeared to be locals and regulars.

We have returned a second time and found the service and quality to be excellent again. I would definately recommend this restaurant to anyone who doesn't want McDonalds or Pizza Hut.

We went on a sunday for brunch, they weren´t even busy. The waitress couldn´t get I wanted a side of salad instead of fries.
After 20 minutes of me and boyfriend explaining her, she brougth me a whole salad!! We explained I only needed a side for my (mediocre) omelete, she never bring it to the table. The rest of the staff wasn´t helpful or nice neither. Worse service ever, I was just upset.

My girl friend and I walk in spontaneously and ordered some food. My girl friend ordered a Pasta dish and I ordered a steak. Our food took about 30 minutes to get ready and I have to say I was not impressed at all. The lack of flavor and their poor service was not a great experience. Save your money and try other great restaurants in little Italy.
