Pretty much unknown to those outside the Kensington Market neighbourhood, as well as many newcomers to it, I Deal Coffee takes caffeine pretty seriously. This is James Fournier’s coffee shrine, where coffee beans are carefully selected and roasted, pumping out a more traditional, “old style” bakery or roasterie of the past.

Fortier really does know his coffee-related stuff; he brings in fresh batches of coffee each month from Central America, Africa and Asia. He then roasts those beans daily, for those who want their Guatemalan Huehuetenango organic, bird friendly, co-operatively farmed coffee roasted to a dark French and poured in an eighteen second double shot espresso.

I Deal Coffee uses a system where they grade each of their coffee’s for its sustainability factor using four categories they feel contribute to an ideal world. These are; environmentally, socially, politically and economically. Ask about the “Around the World,” a rich, full bodied blend, with a pinch of El Salvador at a lighter roast.

Ventured into I Deal coffee while gf and I were strolling through Kensington. I took in the style that is hipster shabby at 1st glance ordering my latte. Hipster grunge gave way to real grunge. This place is dirty. Dirty behind the bar. Dirty around the espresso machine. I won't be back. Better around the corner down the street at another espresso bar, the name or which i don't ever recall seeing.

If you are hard core coffee drinker this is the place to get your latte, americano, cappucino.
It is a no nonsense, no frills, coffee house with fabulous free-trade beans, and a good espresso machine ( not one of the new automatic machines that massacre espresso beans ).
I have never had any of the baked goods but head on over here and sit on the haphzard patio seating. There are only a few seats inside so this may not be a place to bring your lap-top and relax for a few hrs.
The staff is always friendly. The service is pure " coffee ".
