Don't get your T-bone-loving utensils all in a tangle over Houston’s at Front and Yonge - this location has too much of a corporate feel. But, the large room adjacent to the bar is filled with cushy leather chairs that beckon, “Bring your brandy”.

While the completely-re-gutted space is a lot more than lipstick and a new dress, the dining area feels generic in a hotel restaurant way. But, even if a dining room with enough wood paneling, dark suits and stern-faced CEO notables to fill a boardroom is not your style, there are plenty of reasons to like Houston’s.

The restaurant's muscular decor is equally matched by its heavyweight menu, which showcases all things meat, because Houston’s is all about the beef. That means thick chops charred with deep, crusty exteriors and juicy red interiors, each cooked as ordered. The menu is straightforward, typical steakhouse, but not everything succeeds as well as the beef. The best of the appetizers is the shrimp cocktail, with four ice-cold jumbo shrimp and spicy cocktail sauce spiked with horseradish. Others we tried didn't fare as well, lacking either balance or finesse. Tiny chicken wings packed a too-heavy BBQ flavour. As for the Caesar salad, crisp petals of romaine lettuce were coated in a mild dressing reminiscent of mayonnaise, while salt was the predominant flavour of the French Onion Soup.

A bit intimidated by the $$$ market price for the filet mignon, we opted for two New York Cut entrees and put the difference toward a smooth, musky cabernet. The cuts – both medium rare - were moist and tender, but we were surprised by a pepper flavour that took our taste buds west. The accompanying (by request) mushrooms sautéed in butter, were surprisingly bland. But on a subsequent visit – this time for the highly priced Prime Rib Au Jus and Shrimps – a side of creamed spinach was rich and satisfying. Other sides include Toulouse Sausage, baked potato and pilaf rice.

The wine list leans toward global and contains some surprisingly well-priced bottles. Wines are stored and served at proper temperatures and poured into good stemware. It's always wise to compare the bottle's label to the wine you ordered; an incorrect vintage was presented to us on one occasion, but the problem was quickly rectified. Desserts continued the hit-or-miss pattern.

I don't believe it will be possible for another establishment to beat the disappointment I felt, after dining at Houston the other night, for a friend’s birthday.
Our reservation was for 5 people at 7:30 pm; however we arrived 10 minutes early. We were seated immediately which probably was the best thing that happened all night. The restaurant was not bus, with only a few patrons on the patio. The hostess seated us in the private dining room, by request and were given our menus. It took 20 minutes for the waitress to greet our table and take our orders, then another 20 minutes to get the drinks and appetizers.
Throughout the entire service, we could see the flustered staff running through the restaurant, which would have been understandable had the restaurant been full; yet they had maybe 15 customers the whole night.
After 1 hour, our salads and soups arrived and we began to eat. I had a Caesar salad, which was bland and dry; however not wanting to complain, I continued eating. Almost finished eating, I look down at my plate to see a long black hair to my and my friends’ disgust. Conveniently, the waitress arrived a few minutes later. We showed her the plate and she seemed very indifferent to the fact that there was hair found in the food, saying "It could be mine". What person in their right mind, who works in the service industry ,would respond like this? Not to mention the fact that she rushed through dealing with the hair complaint so she could sort out the orders for the entrees because she couldn’t remember who was having what.
We asked for the manager at this point, who came to apologize. He said that they were extremely under staffed and asked us to please keep in mind that for the 15-20 people in the restaurant, they only had 2 waitresses. Again, this is not something that you want to hear, especially seeing that we had made the reservations a few night earlier and that we had already been there 1 hour and half and had yet to see our entrees. We mentioned this to him he said he "would steal steaks from other guests in order to get our orders to us faster". Once again, is this supposed to make us feel better?
The night continued to go downhill, from drinks that were ordered and them promptly forgotten, mixed up sides and steaks that were sent back 3 times. In total, we were at the restaurant from 7:20 to 11:45 pm, for a party of 5! Management and staff handled the service and complaints poorly and the food, when it came correct, was mediocre.
I highly warn any prospective diner to stay away from this restaurant. It was by far the worse dining experience I’ve ever had!

I recentley took my best friend to the Vaughan Mills location for her birthday and we had a great time and meal. The service was really good, when we got there we requested a specific seat and it took them only 10 minutes to get it for us on a busy saturday night. We'll definitely be going back!

The downtown location is HORRIBLE! I'll happily settle for any other restaurant in the area before I ever waste my time and money there again.

My husband and I have visited the Vaughan Mills location of Houston Steaks & Ribs a few times now and have always had a great experience. The staff are very friendly and attentive. We have had steak, ribs and have tried a number of their special menu meals and have never been disappointed. We would never hesitate recommend to our friends. It is a great place for a business lunch.

I recently went to Houston's Steak and Ribs in Vaughan, and I have to it was amazing! I admit at first, I was a little worried after the reviews I had read. The waiter was very pleasant and down to earth it was his fourth day working at this location and he did a wonderful job. I had ribs with chicken tenders, and let me tell yo the meat fell right off te bone, and the chicken tenders were really tasty. I also had their carrot cake and it was delicious. I went with three other people and they said they would go back again and would highly reccomend it to their friends. The restaurant was a little pricy, but I guess you get what you pay for.

I have never had bad prime rib in a restaurant...until last night when I went to Houston's for the first time. My first time will be my last. My husband and I are locals and although we had not heard rave reviews on Houston's we thought we would try it to see for ourselves. Our server forgot to put in our appetizer order (there might have been 10 other people in the restaurant so it wasn't exactly because she was rushed off her feet) then when our main course arrived, I can't say I was at all impressed. When the baked potato is the best part of your meal there are problems. I have never tasted prime rib like that, ever. I can't even describe it. Awful works. My husband had the "Baseball Steak". Our first question was why was it called that. At The Keg it is obvious. This steak looked like just a normal steak. I tried it too hoping we could share at least an 8oz piece of meat to save the night...not so good. How can a steak house have bad steak and prime rib. Goodbye Houston's. At least we can agree on all the bad reviews now.

What the heck happened to this place. This restaurant has gone down the toobs, I mean come on. I don't know what happened but the last time I was there, mid December it was terrific, now, it SUCKED. I had spent some time at another office in Woodbridge and visited the location in Vaughan Mills, I have no complaints about my experience there. But downtown, holy expletive, it's like it's under new ownership or something. I didn't see any of the familiar faces we usually see, we had no visit from a manager to our table, and the eye candy, let's just say it's taken a turn for the worse. At least if my meal sucked it would be nice to stare at the hot staff they used to have. NOT ANYMORE!!! It will be a long time before I return to the downtown location.

We were a party of two, my brother and my self. we were treated like royality at the Vaughn establishment. Prompt searing, the place was practically full, drinks were kept topped up if needed, the food was top notch ( the best ribs I have ever tasted), servere were very easy on the eyes, manager visited and chatted with us several times during our meal. We are going to be back in TO in a few days on business and will be checking the Young St. establishment out. There is no kids menu and wouldnt recommend taking small childern there. We give you 4 thumbs up keep up the good work.

We went to the Houston's in the Vuaghan Mills mall and I just can't believe there's any affiliation with the Houston's downtown, but I was told there is. This place sucked, bottom line. We were there with a group of 5 guys and not one single person had anything good to say about the experience. Three of us have been to the one downtown and loved it so we figured we'd check out this one because we live in Vaughan, big mistake. We'll never return to this Houston's and will never recommend it either.

This place is the absolute WORST when it comes to getting a seat. Empty tables everywhere, yet they act like it's at capacity. Ordered a simply hamburger... first bite into it and I could see "red juices". I was told that I should have specified that I wanted it well done... indeed, next time I will tell them to hold the e coli. Wait, there won't be a next time. This place is awful - don't get me wrong, it was a REAL NICE *IDEA*, but for a "Steak and Ribs" joint, it should at least have graduated past the Hamburger cooking school.

Although the ribs are probably the best tasting, they do not tell you that they cook them in bacon fat. In this enviornment of healthy eating, it should be noted on the menu so that people can decide for themselves if they really want to submit themselves to such unhealthy food.

Worst $10 hamburger I have ever eaten! Very slow service, but lots of apologies. Six of us tried to get a beer and a bite before the Raptor's opening game, but was a very bad experience. We were told we should have made reservations. Not sure why, we got a table okay, we just couldn't get served. Next time we will make reservations, but not at Houston's!

This was the worst place I think I have eatten. Myself with 3 colleaugues during lunch hour attended Houston's. All meals were not cooked proplerly, Medium came out mooing..... We had to ask for steak sauce and was told it doesn't come with the meal, We were not given options to have the steak cooked longer. The wait time for food was exteme, especially for people who only get an hour for lunch. The whole experience was awfull......
We attended the new one at the Vaughan Mills Mall.

This was my first visit to Houston and I must admit it was exactly what I was expecting. I had also read the reviews from when they opened and I never trust anything written in the first 3 or 4 months of a restaurant opening up. Recently I had heard great things about it and since I work in the neighbourhood I thought I should check it out for myself. The staff are, well, HOT, the food was delicious and the ambiance was very warm and inviting. There were 6 of us and we all felt like we were VIP's even though 3 of us hadn't been there before. We will definitely return and tell everyone how great it was. Keep up the good work Houston.

I have to admit that my first visit; you could tell that they were experiencing some bumps in their road. Yes timing wasn't perfect, waitress was better looking than knowledgable. I went back not to long ago to be pleasantly surprised that they seem to have found there place and ironed out those bumps. The service was extremely friendly, the food tasty and hot, and drinks always topped up. I especially enjoy the ambiance of a lightly lit restuarant, tables not so close to each other that you can over hear the table next to you,(I hate that). I think this restuarant just needed some time to find there niche, I'll definitely be back.

Houston's gets a bad rep, unfortunately I don't think many know that this resturant opened in the Christmas rush of last year, all new staff, and a very demanding clients (Bay Street Crowd). Like any new resturant they should be allowed to work out some of the kinks that a NEW resturant experiences. For myself I am a regular patron of the establishment. I am greeted from the moment of walking in, the bartender knows what I drink. For those who might give it a chance, would truely realize that you do get much more personable service, they are friendly, proffesional and for those who like there ribs they are "fall of the bone" a personal favorite. Considering where they are located (financial district)and neighboring resturants, they are very reasonable with there prices. Try eating at some of the other resturants around the corner and compare. What you pay for the cost of your meal, and typically the snooty attidude of the waitress. I think people are to harsh on this small chain, which is new to the demands of Toronto Clientile.

I have never been to this restaurant, I look forward to going one day. I just wanted to say to those who had a bad expierence @ this restaurant, you must have been having a bad day, give a place a second chance before you bad mouth it....Maybe you think that if you give a bad review no one will ever go. Well you are wrong, I like to find out for myself if a location is good or not. Just ignore the bad reviews and just try it...Enjoy.

My wife and I had our first visit to Houston Steak & Ribs and thought it was really great. My wife had a Ny steak and I had quite possibly the best Prime Rib I've ever had in Toronto. Service was outstanding, our waitress was very attentive to all of our needs and the bartender made me a mean martini. The regular wine list was pretty average, a lot of stuff I've seen elsewhere but the Private Selection was quite impressive, we had a bottle from Australia, fairly priced and something I haven't ever seen before. All in all we had a great time and will definitely return.

I think there is a difference between recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of an establishment and having bad luck with a server. I was there shortly after it had opened. I thought that the service staff had a great coordinated flow among them. Our server was the perfect mix of professional, polite and friendly. He did a great job on drawing our attention to highlights on the wine, food and dessert menus - as did the others on shift that night. It did seem a bit night-clubbish but with modern/contemporary decor what doesn't these days? I saw the manager visiting tables - he never made it to us. Everyone was friendly on the way in and out, even those that didn't directly benefit from a tip from us.

Been there three times so far. This will probably be my last trip there. Quality of service is extremely variable. So is the food. Main reason I keep coming back is: a) the central location, and b) the waitresses are extremely ... talented (wink, nudge). Bottom line is: for much better steaks and service, and at a comparable price, go to The Keg.

In short, this place sucks hard.

We attended a corporate event here where all orders we pre-ordered. They seemed to have no idea who ordered what, or even what we ordered. Many orders we taken back to the kitchen several times. Some of us were done eating before others even got their food. We never received the soups or salad that were supposed to be included with out entrees. One guy was delivered his salad after he was done eating and was in the process of drinking his desert coffee.

The ribs were lacking of any sign of actual meat and were dry and tough.

Never have I been in a restaurant where everything was just so bad - the service, the food, and the attitude.

    Thumbs way down.

If there was a 0 star rating, this place would receive it.
Read Joanne Keats review in this Saturday's Globe & Mail. It is spot on.
The food is a throw back to the 70s in both quality and creativity, the place has a feel as cold as Iceland and what's with the maitre d' and servers with the headsets - so 90's.
It's an embarassment to its namesake!

What a disappointing experience this place was. The atmosphere was that of a dance club in its final days, with amateur wait staff and annoying music. Our waiter took our drink order, but failed to bring half of it even after reminding him three times, brought our appetizers before taking our food order, told us that our first two wine requests weren't in stock, only to have the manager come back and tell us that they are in fact available. Then, 15 minutes after taking our food order, the manager had to come again to inform us that they were out of prime rib...can you say inventory management? Finally the food came, and unfortunately it didn't make up for the lousy service. The mashed potatos had that powdered, fake taste to it, the caeser salad was indeed very mayonaissey and not much of anything else, but the meat was actually not bad. The best part of the whole meal was the key lime pie, which of course they buy from an outside supplier, so I can't even give them credit for it. Overall a very poor experience, beaten 10-fold by even the Keg. Oh, and even after all the headaches and hassles and poor service, they didn't even offer to comp anything on our bill. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

I was shocked to read some of the reviews of this new restaurant in downtown Toronto. I work in the business district and have just visited Houston's for the first time, I was extremely satisfied. The service was exceptional and the food was delicious, especially the ribs, if you like the "fall off the bone" style. Their bbq sauce that was on the ribs was one of the best I've ever had. I think people who have visited and given them such a harsh review need to take a step back and see what they've accomplished in such a short period of time. The manager who came over, very nicely dressed, explained that they have been really busy right from the get go. I will continue to go there and I would strongly recommend them to anyone looking for a great place to eat and drink.

A half hour after we placed our order with the waitress she comes back only to re-take our order. Apparently our order was "misplaced". Finally about and hour later..(how long does it take to prepare a medium-rare steak?! There were only 5 other tables occupied in the WHOLE place on a Saturday night!!!) we at last get our food. This has happened before at other restaurants and typically at least one of the entres is taken off the bill. NOT AT HOUSTONS. The bill came back as if nothing happened. When I kindly mentioned to the lovely waitress that something should be done she went to speak to her Manager. From accross the room, the manager in the cheap suit takes a look at our table, mumbles something to the waitress, and the runs into the kitchen to hide. Any manager with an ounce of professionalism would handle this situation personally and not leave it up to his staff. The bill came back to us with a whole 5 DOLLARS off! (of a $100 bill). IS THAT DISPICABLE OR WHAT?! The manager was nice enough to comp our $5 dessert. OH PLEASE. I've had many wonderful experiences at Houston restaurants in the States. SHAME ON HOUSTON's in Toronto for ruining the chain's rep...and shame on them for hiring such an incompetant manager and letting him represent their restaurant --- even worse, on a Saturday evening!

I have been to Texas for steaks and if your gonna compare any steak place to Texas your wasting your time! This place has great value for the location and food quality. I was there soon after it opened and when a place just opens the service usually is terrible and I must admit the service was like the place had established itself already and appeared that someone had taken the time to educate the servers. A bonus for me is that I hate having a man serve me and all the servers were female which I prefer.

This establishment will get better before it gets worse and dosen't seem to have the commercial appeal of THE KEG and feels more individualistic and personal!

    I will go again!!!!

I thought this place was crap. The steak tasted like a worn out tire. I wasn't expecting that much considering its an American chain. I'd rather eat at the Keg. The service was horrible. The only positive thing about the dining experience was the rack on the waitress.
