Muddy Waters traveled it. Bob Dylan revisited it. Robert Johnson sold his soul on its crossroad. The storied Highway 61 is the site of countless myths, endless music history, and a ton of culture. It's also the spot where real barbecue was born. And, little do many people know, this illustrious link to the south actually starts in Thunder Bay, Ontario. With the new Highway 61 restaurant at Bayview and Davisville, the link between Ontario and the American South is no longer purely geographical.

Kerry Knoll came up with the idea for Highway 61 after a lifetime of journalism, mineral exploration, and backyard barbecue. Despite having little to no restaurant experience, BBQ is in his blood. Knoll's father, a Major in the Canadian Army, developed his own BBQ sauce back in the 1960s. Since then, the secret family recipe, which uses 75% less sugar and 85% less salt then store-shelf brands, has become somewhat legendary. Knoll sold the sauce in St. Lawrence Market for a number of years, before his day job took over the bulk of his attention. Since then people have been demanding the return of the sauce.

So, when Kerry retired a year ago, opening his own barbeque joint seemed like the logical next step. Since he didn't know the first thing about opening a restaurant, Knoll enlisted Ken McGarrie (Hunt Club) and Nick Sinnett (Lakes, Sir Corp), both experienced restaurateurs. Taking over the former spot of Cluck, Grunt and Low, Highway 61 is aiming to bring some authentic smokery to a deprived Toronto BBQ market. "Highway 61 will be a bit of a destination," boasts Kerry. "Only because there's so little barbecue in Toronto. Kansas City has a population on fifth the size of Toronto, and yet it has over a hundred licensed barbecue joints. Toronto only has about four. We hope to open up the market a bit."

The starting point, of course, was the celebrated sauce, but in order to flesh out the menu, Kerry and his partners hit the road. That road was Highway 61. Taking bits of recipes and techniques from Memphis, St. Louis, and Mississippi, the restaurant takes BBQ tradition seriously, and as we all know, BBQ lovers are purists in the purest sense. The menu includes all the standards: Smoked Chicken, Beef and Pork Ribs (served sticky or dry), 15-hour Smoked Brisket, Collard Greens, Jalapeno Cornbread, and ginormous combo plates. Everything is smoked right in the restaurant, and according to Kerry, "we only serve what we smoke that day." That, of course, means that often the more popular dishes will run out, but that's the price you pay for freshness. After all, no one complains when a bakery runs out of bread (or at least, they shouldn't).

Quality of ingredients is just as important. Highway 61 gets all its meats from Rowe Farms, which in turn sources all its ingredients from 12 farms within an hour drive from Toronto. That means free range, hormone free, and devoid of antibiotics. Even the lettuce in the sandwiches and the beans in the chili are certified organic. Similarly, all nine beers on tap are craft breweries, all from Southern Ontario.

    Got suckered again

Being always on the prowl for great BBQ I thought I would venture from downtown to try this place.

Ordered ribs for myself and pulled pork platter for the wife.
Bottom line to keep it short and sweet.

What a waste of time and money

These owners had better go back down south and find good BBQ and try again to repeat here.

    Food HORRIBLE !!! Service acceptable

I will keep looking in Toronto

I do have a favourite, but I will not mention here so my review is not biased

    Thanx for reading

I received a flyer in the mail for Highway 61 and read how much the owners valued blues music and southern US BBQ. So, being that I enjoy both, I thought I'd check it out. My husband and I went on a Sunday afternoon. The place was dead (for a Sunday afternoon??) but the music was good. I also tried their Highway 61 ale, which, was the best part of the meal. As far as their BBQ is concerned it was sub-par. I've had bottled BBQ sauce which was much tastier. I had the burger and onion rings. The burger was too small for the over sized (and cold) bun. It also seemed like it was warmed up in the microwave. It certainly wasn't fresh off the grill. And, I received 4 (count them!), 4 small onion rings. My husband had the 1/2 rack of ribs and fries (which were cold). The service was nothing special, they seemed relatively uninterested in us and seemed bothered when I asked 'what was on tap' as the waitress pointed to the bar and walked away. The only really good thing about this place was the music. As a blues-lover, they did have some really good tunes on. But, I can make BBQ at home using jarred sauce and blare blues music for a lot less than $40.00... I'm not really sure how they stay in business, especially on the expensive strip of Bayview.

Love the atmosphere! The food is excellent! I particularly love the Dakota Ribs! The pork ribs are also great! I own a smoker myself but I will need a lot more experience to produce BBQ of this quality!

The service is very good even when the place is busy! To crown it all, the live music is wonderful and the price points deliver great value!

Like Runningref, I tend to overeat every time I visit Highway 61!

My wife & I decided to check out Highway 61 last Saturday night. We got there at 7 pm. There was a line up. We waited at the bar for ten minutes and were shown a table. Decor is nice, food OK. My fave was the $10. beef rib.Very tender and juicy Least favorite were the $4.99 (for 6) onion rings.Hardly value for money and nothing out of the ordinary taste wise. The pulled pork & brisket were a bit dry with no taste of smoke flavour. The excellent saunce helped. I thought it was just me( My wife also tasted no smoke) but I was talking to the fellow beside me who had the same opinion. We also ordered three ribs;one dry,one wet,one half and half. Again no smoke flavour. The wet rib was tasty, the dry rib tasteless but moist. I inquired as to the smoke they used(mixture of oak &apple) and suggested they might want to use more. The manager said they used the amount they did because some people don't like their meat with much . I did not ask why the rub on the ribs was as bland as it was.
The evening was nearing its end .My wife went to the loo,I paid the bill. Then the manager comes up to me and says "Let me comp your meal;your wife just took a fall on the stairs" Excuse me? My wife is alright but has a ten inch bruise on her hip to show for it. Staff offered to get an ambulance or a taxi to take her home and they gave her the owners card. She said she was fine,if not sore. What caused the slip was the new wood laminate on the stairs and basement floor. Good thing she did not hit her head. So over all, food 6.5 out of 10,service 10 out of 10, laminated stairs 0 out of 10.As I mentioned the decor is nice but I like my meat with a bit of zip.

So this is where all of the complainers in Toronto hangout, at this site? Its like everybody happends to be a master food critic with relatives directly related to the person who invented BBQ sauce.

The food is good and so are the portions, the Praire Fire wings, are you kidding me, I'm addicted to those. The service I've received has always been friendly, they know their beers, and sitting upstairs by the window with live Blues playing on a warm night with a beautiful girl how much better does it get. What would I change- well, I've eaten everything on the menu now so changing up some of the selections would be great, and ensuring all waiters/waitresses give the same level of service I've received would clear up what others have mentioned, but thats about it. Okay, and maybe a bigger TV upstairs but its not a sports bar, its a Blues BBQ place with GREAT fricken organic wings.

I've been over 10 times and will keep going back- plus they have patio space now. Better than Originals, Better than McSorelys, just wish they had live music more often.

Terrible. Just terrible. Bland meat with no taste of smoke (why the owner, Nick, was in such a hurry to show me their "smokers" is a mystery to me - they are closer to steamers than smokers; in the right hands they sort of work but these are rank amateurs and it shows). Maybe being from the South and having spent my university and grad school years in Texas has made me unduly harsh but this food was crap. Big Beef bone was all fat and no meat, pulled pork was dry as was the brisket (and it was cold!), mac & cheese was bland and oily, collards were scorched and almost black, I could have broken a window with the corn muffins, sauce about as exciting as bottled Kraft, the fresh-brewed ice tea was pale and watery, and the chili tasted burnt. When I complained, the owner (I think his name was Ken) told me that's how they do it in Texas and if I really had lived in Texas I would know that. Work on that attitude, buddy.

And a note to the chef/owner: gumbo is not a soup. For god sakes, start with a roux (a Cajun roux, not a French roux though this "gumbo" was not started with a roux - yecch). This was a tomato sausage soup that wasn't even good as a soup.

After 4 visits, I give up (2 of which were not by choice - they were group decisions).

The above reviewer stating that we call highways "routes" in the States is not entirely correct. I grew up living off of Highway 70, Highway 61 is called "Highway 61", Highway 41 used to be the main road to Florida, etc. The only route we ever called "route" was Route 66 but that's not it's official name - that would be US Highway 66.

Reading the reviews above I'd say the place has good and bad days. I avoided going for a while but a friend said they had a great beer selection, small ONtario breweries. I live in the area and have noticed it's getting busier so I finally stopped in with a friend a couple of Mondays ago. First good news was that they had draft at $3.50 a pint. Apparently they have one beer every Monday a this price. Loved the food though I ate too much. Ribs and collard greens. Must have been a good day. Then I noticed a band setting up. It was a Monday night and early, around 7 pm. So we stuck around and these guys, who apparently play every Monday, were really good. Steve and Steve somebody. So we have a new blues bar in the 'hood. Very cool, ever since the demise of Chicken Deli. I like live music but the stuff at Originals up the street doesn't do it for me. We went back the next Friday when there was more live music but didn't go in as they said there was a half hour wait and I'm not a lineup person. I'm going to check out the next Monday though for sure.

    8. Bob's Review :: April 11, 2009
    Bob's Rating: Stars
After the disappointment of the previous "Cluck, Grunt, Low", and the hype surrounding
Highway 61, I wanted to see how good it was. Overall the service was excellent, and the
atmosphere okay, although the benches we sat on upstairs didn't seem to be finished (the
back cushions were detached from whatever support there was). That aside, the food
was prompt, and they had a good kids selection, although like many establishments,
they lack the vegetable sides for kids that are available all over Europe. It would be nice
if more establishments made their kids meals a little healthier. They do provide
steamed vegetables as normal sides, which is nice.

The food however was slightly disappointing. The pulled pork on a bun was ok, but the
sauce was just squirted on the top, not mixed in with the meat, which is kind-of weird. It doesn't allow the flavours of the sauce to cover all the pulled pork. My wife ordered the pulled pork on a plate, same deal. When asked where the sauce was, she was told that she could add it herself from a squirt bottle. This because some customers had complained about having the sauce added. Seems a little weird... the whole idea of pulled pork is to have it slathered in sauce. Besides even if the sauce were added after, I would prefer warm sauce, not sauce from a squeeze bottle.

I had the coleslaw as a side, and it too was ok. I did find that it was lacking a little bit of "crunch" or crispness. Maybe that's a personal preference. A little less dressing perhaps?
My wife had the baked beans, which were not sweet at all, which is fine, but I like my baked beans to have some of those molasses flavours... again personal preference.
The fries my daughter had seemed somewhat spicey, which seemed weird for a kids meal.

The price was good, but overall, I don't think we will go back.

The other weird thing is the name. In the US, most highways are known as routes. So
"Route 61" may have been a better name than "Highway 61". I can understand that Highway 61 goes from Thunder Bay to the border, where it links up to Minnesota State Highway 61, which then links up to US Highway 61... but if it's southern food you're
trying to promote, Route 61 would be better... that way people associate it with Route 66.

    Just my 2c

Loved this place, we had the burger and the ribs, both wet with the yummy sauce. The coleslaw and the onion rings are fantastic too. Reasonably priced for so much food. We have been raving to our friends about the food and noticed a line up outside last week when we drove by so others like it too.

Outstanding !!!!!! We live in the neighbourhood and love to eat at many of the restaurants that are local. The last place ( Cluck, Grunt and Low ) was very disappointing !!! I was apprehensive about this one - as the decor has remained basically the same. That's where the similarities STOP. The food is delicious - the ambiance is friendly and warm and fun - the staff upbeat and young and enthusiastic. We loved it - and have been back 3 times - doing our first take-out today !!!
I highly recommend the smoked chicken - and the onion rings - coleslaw gets a high rating as well. ALL the food we have sampled has been fantastic !!
It's worth the trip - and very reasonable !!! The portions are huge, but you will always have left-overs - sent home with you in environmentally friendly takeout containers !! They get 4 stars from our family !!!!!

Expected a lot more from the brisket and pulled pork. Shouldn't pulled pork come with the sauce already on it??? The brisket was dry and the meat was served cold.
    Sorry, Never going back -

I hope they've got their act together now.

We went for dinner shortly after they opened and as BBQ afficiandos, were quite disappointed. First of all, they had no beef brisket. We were eating at 6pm, so it's not like they had gone through it all already. Secondly, no baked beans. I've never heard of a smokehouse not having either and almost left at that point.

We ordered the large BBQ platter to share for four and asked that we get more pulled pork in place of the missing brisket. The platter came - the chicken was dry, but the ribs (both pork and beef) were good. The pulled pork was tasteless and dry, and we didn't get very much at all.

The coleslaw was good, although we could have used more when considering the cost of cabbage and the tiny side dish it came in - and that the platter was for 4 to share.

Corn fritters were missing from the menu (a BBQ staple), and the cornbread side was poor value of two tiny corn muffins.

I wouldn't go back, nor would I send anyone, but the ribs were good.

Highway 61 Restaurant is exactly what this city needs. This is "comfort food" done right and in U.S. portions. You won't be leaving here hungry!

First off, try a pint of Highway 61 draft. Wow, now you can read the beautiful menu, and understand the philosophy behind why these guys have re-invented the best of REAL southern barbecue. I had a Memphis Minnie (I was starving), but darned if I didn't take half of it home with me to have for lunch the next day.

The chicken was "smoked" all the way through, the brisket juicy, tender and delicious and the ribs are to die for. These are ribs like you've never tasted in Toronto before.
I opted for Sweet potato fries (wow, how can I rip off the chef's secret?)

The folks around me were tucking into pulled pork, pulled chicken, with or without the amazing sauce and we were letting each other try our dishes because the coleslaw looked great as well and the guy next to me was having a "B.B. King" (which serves 3-5 people),
so I had some negotiating room.

The staff were attentive without being "in your face" constantly and the music and atmosphere all came together in one big fusion of southern hospitality.

Will I be back? You bet, brother. There's so much more yet to try. Check it out
Highway 61 is the real deal and these guys are serious about giving customers a different experience. Just be prepared to ask to take home the leftovers.

A dissapointing introductory take out order.
I ordered a platter, when asked sticky or dry - chose dry.
Now my expectation is that we were talking about the ribs only. I have never been served dry pulled pork! The chicken without the sauce is somewhat plain too. The sauce is good, but the pork needs to be soaking in it. Everything was tender, ribs tasty, chicken was not dry, but it did need the sauce, and the pork I put aside to mix with sauce and make a sandwich for the next day. The baked beans are wonderful!

Ordered the Mac and cheese sheppards pie. At +$13 for an order we expected a healthy serving. While it tasted good, we were disappointed to have it arrive in the same side container as the coleslaw and baked beans. Not much value for this money.

    Perhaps eat-in is better.

I arrived and left with an uneasy feeling in my stomach - I'll explain. Upon arrival I had deja vu of the former sub-par bbq shack that had occupied the space with very similar decor. I was really hoping I was not in for a repeat of chewy ribs and dry chicken.

I went with a friend who also likes to eat. We ordered the mid-size platter (forgot the name because I'm still dizzy from the meat). This included half a chicken, pulled pork, brisket/beef rib, ribs and a couple sides of your choice (amazing onion rings and great coleslaw). Then we of course thought we needed more food so we ordered extra ribs and sweet potato fries. Btw - all of this food plus two beer cost $30 each incl. taxes. as well as a new belt.

All the meat was extra tender, great flavour - not overly smokey, salty or sweet but the right combination. Sure there was some fat but that keeps the meat moist. Ribs fell off the bone and stringy pulled pork melts in your mouth. Even the chicken, which appears boring on the platter with such fantastic meats was really juicy.

The uneasy feeling I had in my stomach when I left was the fact that I had overeaten about 10 minutes before I stopped eating. That said, I'd do it all over again and I have at least a half a pound of leftovers in my fridge.
