While the Annex is always a worthy area to visit - a book-shopping afternoon at BMV, brunch at The Green Room, late night troublemaking at Lee’s Palace - there are few spots that will leave you gaping in awe. Concrete and cement are what you will see - a Kwik Kopy, Shoppers Drug Mart, and a truck-load of cafés - while the flashing, impatient lighting of the UofT stadium is a constant reminder of the area demographic. Post-games hooligans lay down their Stanley blades here, donning smiley face t-shirts and embracing each other in bars - Sweet. It’s all good fun. But for everyone else, the key is to somehow let yourself be a part of the never-ending flow of visual data around you. Have a cup of coffee at any of the places (that aren’t a Starbucks), grab a movie at the Bloor Cinema, and grab a bite at any of the local eateries.
It won’t be at Mel's Diner, however, as that little local fave unexpectedly shuttered a few months ago. A bit of surprise - not because it was so exceptional in any particular way, but because, well, we kind of just expected it to exist forever. Due to a mix of round-the-clock service, longevity, and affordability, it had achieved the status of Annex student hangout institutionalization, whether deserved or not. Now that the shock of its closure has partially subsided, someone has swooped up the vacant Bloor and Bathurst space, and, as it turns out, it's a familiar face: Hey Lucy Café.
Hey Lucy has existed forever on King Street, but due to its location within a huge, barely spaced-out chunk of downtown, touristy restaurants, it has been easy to miss. Still, its signature mix of casual atmosphere and affordable cuisine has already proved to be a hit on Bloor Street. Not too much of a surprise, considering the unbeatable Martini Wednesday specials ($3.99 for any martini!), which also seems to work out well for The Labyrinth. Coinciding with the opening, both locations of Hey Lucy has launched new menus, but still featuring the classic Wood-burning pizzas.
Wood-burning oven comfort fare is the mot juste for the patrons in their late teens to mid-60s at this second location, with the underlying motive being to spurn die-cast stylishness for budget prices and fun drinks. HL features the likes of calzones, pastas and paninis, but the main draw, as is at the other location, the wood fired pizza. With a stealth pizza selection that takes us from the Margherita with sliced bocconcini ($12) and the pesto chili sausage ($15) to the smoked bacon pesto with roasted red peppers ($16) and the flat iron steak and balsamic onion pizza ($16) the house has covered all bases. Best bet, however is to ask for Mr. White (roast chicken pizza with mushrooms, sliced potato with a rosemary garlic oil and a serious dose of mozzarella). - M.P.

Great space & service.Food is very weak & over priced. Wouldn't rush back Only two out of the five dishes we ordered ( the pizzas) were good. The soup tasted awful, salad average. Went away hungry & dissapointed.

The King Street location is a tad better. Just a tad. But better nonetheless.

Went two weeks after the Bloor location opened, after receiving a rave recommendation from a friend who knows his pizza, and who had eaten there in the first week after opening.
We were a large group and six of us ordered pizza, and were disappointed with the crust which was tough, although the toppings were great.
One of our group is a restauranteur; he saws likely the A team from downtown came up and worked week 1 to train the Bloor Street staff; by week 2, the new team would have been working on their own for the first time, hence the tough pizza crust.
Our restauranteur says give them a few more weeks to work things out; the pizza crust will probably improve dramatically as the new kitchen staff gets the hang of it all.
We liked the rest of the food. We all found the wait staff very attentive and eager to please. The ambience is nice, especially for the de-gentrifying Annex. It's a nice combination of cozy and upscale. It's quite a nice change from Mel's, which had grown so grotty as to ruin your appetite.
The place was packed and all the customers looked very happy the night we were there.
We will return, in a few weeks when they work out the rest of the kinks.

It's not bad but as other have said they need focus more on customer service
I mean the only reasons why people eat out are because 1. they are on a date 2. it's easy 3. they like the vibe of the place. So if they want to prosper on this busy street they are going need to step up the service......I'll go back I think next week and see if anything has changed I think everyone or place needs a second chance.

I recently just discovered Hey Lucy on Bloor St. I was hesitant because it just looked like the average "dressy on the outside but terrible service and food" So the food moderate. Breakfast was luke warm and well service was bad. Busy or not- you should really keep track of your costumers. The only thing I have good to say about it is the greeter.

I am a bartender, have been in the service industry for years and consider myself more then forgiving when it comes to service. I am generally a pretty low maintenance customer but have very little tolerance for a staff with a 'couldn't care less' attitude who believes a large tip is entitled not earned (though I obviously still tipped -karma). Having to consistently get up to ask our waitress (the bartender, other waitress and manager) for drinks when she was literally five feet away from us is ridiculous (especially when it is not a question of her being busy, she was just totally on another planet).
The manager was very nice and if it wasn't for his help I and my friend would probably still be sitting there waiting for our drinks.
Hey Lucy's is a nice addition to the neighborhood, just need to work out some service issues.
