Succeeding the former Café Brussel space on the Danforth, Globe Bistro may have found the right formula. Concentrating on international flavours and adding a dash of Canadian flair, it has the right vibe. Owner and pimp namesake, Ed Ho orchestrated big-budget wonders with the 4,000 square foot space, losing the dark art décor aesthetics in favour of elegant chic. Acres of blonde wood, a sea of white linen and 16 foot vaulted ceilings put diners in a festive mood, further augmented by the global-plates concept.

There's something irresistible about Globe. The dining room is always busy and buzzing. The clever positioning of tables and mirrors provides an assortment of angles to people-watch (come on, admit it) in the long and narrow dining room, yet the space is also conducive to private and intimate conversation (you don’t want the entire restaurant to witness your attempt to seduce your date).

While I've never had a problem getting a table, the hosts often seem slightly, shall we say, stressed. Some disgruntled patrons have complained on web sites (including this one) about bouncer-like behavior and inattentiveness when the room gets busy. Of course, these grouchy grumblings only enhance the aura of exclusivity surrounding this joint, as the patrons who are fortunate enough to be seated exchange scheming grins (à la the Joker of Batman circa 1989) and superior glances to those still waiting for a table. I haven't experienced any of that; it seemed to me that the eager-to-please waiters have yet to realize that they could easily get away with a huge amount of attitude.

New(ish) Executive Chef, Ben Heaton (Far Niente) has worked his quirks into Globe's plates with a distinctively quiet and engaging style. He takes the bistro repertoire and adds his signature touches that twist the dishes in unpredicted directions, without overwhelming your palette. Beginning with the starters, the empanada appetizer showcases Heaton's presence. The little ovals of pastry with supple Dungeness crab ($7) are warmed and presented with a roasted plantain crema; the spicing of jalapeño salsa adds an aggressive combustion of heat that makes it hard to stop eating.

Alternative starters include an herbed Cookstown greens salad ($9), paired with Green Apple Jelly and a gentle sweet Saskatoonberry (brilliant) vinaigrette, or a small plate of roasted heirloom beets wrapped with Niagara prosciutto ($12), pine nuts and lemon crème fraiche. The light, black pepper ricotta gnocchi ($12) puts most other versions around town to shame. Prepared in a black truffle broth, hints of lemon thyme complement the ribbons of roasted wild mushrooms. The most outrageous combination is the braised Berkshire pork belly ($14), practically oozing with flavour, served with seared scallops, with a mustard foam and natural reduction. (Imagine that sound Homer makes when he craves).

My husband and I have had the pleasure of dining here three times and each time we have left satiated feeling that we had an optimal dining experience.

The first time we dined at the bar as the dining room was filled, and ordered gourmet burgers which were so decadent. You can definitely taste the freshness and quality of the local produce they use to prepare their savory meals.

Our second time was on the lovely roof top patio where I had their progressive version of a cobb salad. The third time we made reservations and were treated like royalty seated on the top rung overlooking the lower levels, and spoilt with a the evenings special menu offerings . All the staff, from hosts to waitstaff to chefs are appropriatly polite and genuinely accomodating and do not hover overbearingly or leave one feeling unattended to . The ambiance is very sensual in a gastronomically inviting sort of way. You can still picture Cafe Brussels in the framework of the building's structure, but the interior decoration has been elegantly modernized to suit the nouveau vibe.

It's a pity some folks haven't appreciated this wonderful establishment's flavour and elegance or perhaps their ego's & palettes have been tainted by the overratedness of the entertainement district eateries like Ultra or Branthouse.

I'm no resto critic a la James Chatto, but I can say I've had a fair amount of Toronto fine dining experiences under my belt and the Danforth eateries for the most part are lacklustre (attention Lolita's Lust) and if I could give Globe Bistro a 10 I most certainly would.

I look forward to the next time I can relish a delicious experience at Globe Bistro. Well Done Globe Bistro! You deserve the best Laurels Toronto's gastronomes have to offer!

I have had the brunch (weekend) @ Globe twice, both times the food was ok, but warm not hot.! The wait staff try to put on a smile but seem somewhat distant and pre-occupied, perhaps with an underlying fear of the chef, who apparently screams and swears @ them constantly. Sounds like Hells Kitchen to me!

Nice bright room, but you will be waiting for eternity for your meal.I have not ventured in for dinner but after reading some of these reviews, will not be.

Well, well well. What can I say? I should have checked out the reviews below before I visited this establishment. The staff hardly speak a word of respect, no-one was bothering to clear up any of the tables in the restaurant, we had to wait 25 minutes for two glasses of champagne - in short, the worst 'restaurant' I've ever had the misfortune in which to dine. Great ceiling though :)

One of the worst dining experiences of my life. I made a reservation in the bar area as the restaurant was full. The area by the window was freezing cold. Our waiter took the wine order and disappeared for half an hour, after which time he came back and said that he forgot which wine we ordered. We waited another 20 minutes after that to get the wine. In the meantime, the "dj" started blasting the music so loud that I couldn't hear my companion. I complained to the manager twice who assured me that he would turn down the music, but never did. The appetizers arrived 90 minutes after we entered the restaurant. We were finally moved to the main dining area to get away from the music, which wasn't much quieter. The waiter then took our dessert order, and 30 minutes after that came back to inquire how it was (WE NEVER GOT IT!!!). He then apologized and offered dessert on the house. My friend asked for anything without ice cream, and of course we got an ice cream desert. This restaurant is a travesty, especially bad considering that it is located in a space formerly occupied by Cafe Brussels, which one of the loveliest restaurants in the city. Globe Bistro can't decide what it wants to be - an upscale restaurant or a night club that will appeal to 25 year olds. Give it a miss and save your money and nerves.

We recently dined here with another 2 couples. We had 6:30 reservations for which all of us were late by 30 minutes. Nonetheless, we were greeted with a smile by every staff member we passed on our way to our seats. When we had made the reservations, we were told that we would have to vacate our table by 8:30.
We sat and enjoyed a wonderful meal accompanied by our own wine. We found the staff unobtrusive yet always available to meet our needs. They served/cleared very quickly including the change of wine glasses for each bottle of wine that we had brought.
Nobody mentioned our 8:30 deadline and we continued to enjoy, oblivious to the fact that it was well past 10:00 when we left.

Four of us were at globe bistro for dinner last night, and it was just ok.
Was expecting a lot more of an experience because of all the reviews and photo's and buzz but it was not all that.

The host was unfriendly and didn't smile. Our server was excellent, and the food was just ok, nothing to write home to mother obout.
Apps were great, dinner was good, dessert was too sweet.
Great space and high cielings, very cold atmosphere inside.

We had a wonderful dinner for my husbands birthday. Everything was wonderful. They even baked a special cake for us!

The dining room is lovely and really busy. All of our meals were delicious and perfect. The cod dish is so delicious and the steak was cooked perfectly and very large portion.

Everybody had a lovely time. Chef Ben came out to talk to us and he is a really nice man and so young and then Adrian the owner came by to see us many times. The servers all were very friendly and I will go back there again soon. Bravo.

I had a GREAT time at this restaurant just last week.

The service was wonderful, the food was fabulous, the atmosphere was very inviting, it made for a very memorable evening.

If this new restaurant is already performing at such quality I can't wait to return in a few months to taste how they have progressed.

One of the worst dining experierince ever! I was at the restaurant with 7 friends including my wife.

The entire waitstaff seemed to be buzzing around in a panic and bringing out courses so fast one hardly had time to savor them.
We ordered several items to share (which is the theme of the restaurant) among our orders were two of their grilled steaks. When asked for one of the plates to be prepared medium well (not a fan of rare meat) the food server rolled her eyes and then walked away only to return a few minutes later to inform me the chef refuses to cook my order medium well! Astonishing!

I did not ask for something off the menu or for something to be specially prepared, I ask for steak cooked medium well yet was treated horribly. I have eaten in some of the finest restaurants around the world and I have never experienced anything quite like globe bistro
moreover, our waitres was somewhat unknowledgable - when asked if cava or prosecco was available, she answered that she wasn't sure but that they did have San Pellegrino!. Anyway, the frenzied service ruined the evening (not to mention the fact that while clearing the table, the waitres knocked over my water glass, getting most on my pants, and then proceeded to spill the remnants in my plate onto my sweater). Yes, accidents do happen, but they shouldn't happen in a restaurant of this caliber, especially if they weren't in such a hurry. The Chef should remember that he is preparing the food for customers and not joining them for dinner. Save you dinning experience for restaurants who know how to treat their guests, globe bistro fails miserably!

This was the worst restaurant I have been to in many a year. First off the decor. Get a theme. Atrocious paintings,I'm from a country where boiled everything is the staple and this was blander than that!
The fish was overcooked with no flavouring whatsoever, Overpriced for the crap we got. the wait staff was wonderful but there was this head chef ( I think his name was ben) and he was really rude to us and was saying really nasty/mean stuff to the people who work there (wait staff, kitchen staff).

steers well clear of this chef's worst imaginations of fusion dishes

This was one of the worst places I have ever been.

Tried to go many times and finally went for my birthday.1st we waited 45 minutes for our reservation.

Then we were sat in a very busy area of the restaurant after requesting a nice table when we made the reservation.Waited another 15 minutes for a waitress & another 15 for bread water etc.

Finally placed our order and got my app some meat that tasted and looked like leather, overseasoned and overcooked, just nasty nasty nasty~!!

    the sea food was off.

Then our waitress comes over to inform us she is leaving and the busboy will handle our table!!!!The mains arrive and I tell you it was shocking. The empanada was burned, which I was told it was supposed to be like that and so salty.

The sauce was non existant and my dates food was just as bad.

Then cold espresso and and some really horrible desserts.

some of the reviews in here am sure are crated by the owner to save face.

i dont see how this restaurant can deliver and moreover with a mediocre chef who use to work at a fast food place
    got to be kidding

    go back to cooking school

Went to Globe on Sunday and had a great time. Started with the pork belly and scallops and then the lobster as an entree. Both were fabulous. My date had the Caribou leg which was also very tasty. For dessert I sampled the creme brulee (one of the best I've had) and the apple trifle (very refreshing and light).

Loved the atmosphere, we sat up top with a birds eye view to the action below. The only caution I have is that it does get quite busy (especially for a Sunday, we got there at 6:00 and it was completely empty and by the time we left at 8:30 it was completely packed). Near the end of our meal I could tell that the waiter was getting quite busy with other tables, so definitely don't go there if you're in a rush. I would definitely go back and am interested to try out their brunch menu.

For those people complaining that the waiters dress in black perhaps Red Lobster would have a more lively uniform for your tastes. And the wall murals display the effects of backlighting on the human form, NOT an anorexic body type. Some people just like to hear themselves rant.

The waiters definitely hate their jobs here. Depressed looking, our waiter reluctantly popped out answers to our questions. They are all dressed in black.

The soup, appetizers and main courses arrived lukewarm. A big disappointment. The menu offers minimal choices. All the menus are typed on sheets of Legal size papers - very tasteless.

They used loads of sugars in the soup and sauces. Diabetics beware!
There were 8 of us. It felt like that we were sitting inside a warehouse with blank walls and large empty spaces.

There's a huge mural with the black silhouette of an anorexic female hanging on the wall. A big turn off for our appetites!
Along with the waiters in all black, it is probably a good place for Halloween. Who knows, maybe Count Dracula resides there.

this is with out a doubt the worst bistro restaurant i have ever visited. The service was lazy and inconsistent, with the first waiter being extremly rude, and the second waiter being overly friendly. So friendly that he stood over s for around 5 - 10 minutes after bringing out the food. I have no problem with frendlyness but i would of rather enjoyed the company of my boyfriend and not him. never going back~!

    Visited last Thursday evening.
We had reservations and were seated quickly. The decor was clean and sleek. I thought the chandeliers over the main floor eating area and the wall murals were interesting. The atmosphere overall was fine although it lacked warmth.
Our waiter was unhelpful with the menu. We had to pry information from him. The food was acceptable but not exceptional. Perhaps it could have been a better experience had we a better waiter to point us in the right direction on the menu. I ordered a Chablis that was not available. As an alternative I was offered a Sancere or a Voignier. I didn't see how these two wines were comparable to my original selection except possibly in price range and that they were French.
Overall I would say that I was unimpressed. Although the overall experience was acceptable, I couldn't square my experience with the praises of some other reviews I've read.

I had a great time Friday night at Globe. I have eaten out a lot over a lot of years and recognized a number of great servers from other places there. Everyone was totally friendly and professional. I found the room a little chilly and lacking in color, but very comfortable. The food was very "downtown" in beauty and quality. Prices were fair. I had the crab empanada which was very light and crisp. The oxtail was very unique and tasty. Very rich. My wife has salad and the onglet which was a little too rare for her, but very tasty. We shared cheese for dessert which came out very nicely presented and paired. As it turns out, the owner was the server for the cheese and quite knowledgeable on cheese and very friendly. By the time we left the room was jam packed. Great vibe. Wonderful time on our date.

We wish we would have listened to the reviews on this web site regarding Globe bistro in Toronto. We have a six-month-old baby and managed to get a baby sitter for friday night. We called Globe bistro and made reservations for 2 people at 6 o'clock. We pre-bought theater tickets for 8 o'clock that night. When we arrived at globe, the host (later to learn, the owner) recognized our reservation and told us the wait would be approximately 15 minutes. After waiting a half hour at the bar, I checked with the host to see how much longer the wait would be. He identified himself as the owner and apologized that he should better coach his staff that they shouldn't take reservations for 2 people. He then contradicted himself and said that, since it was the weekend, they had taken several reservations . We waited an hour, and, at 7:00, we advised the owner that we were leaving. The owner was unapologetic and very unprofessional! We had traveled a half hour to get to globe bistro, waited an hour, all the while paying for a baby sitter; we left so that we could still salvage our theater tickets and our night! I advise others to listen to these reviews. Stay away from globe bistro! The service is terrible!

After having read so many reviews touting the cuisine at globe bistro, finally decided to give it a try. What a disappointment. Before the food, a comment on the chairs - horribly uncomfortable - straight backed, hardwood and undoubtably designed to turn the tables as quickly as possible (no one could sit there for more than an hour and a half). The food was uninspired, boring and way overpriced for what was offered. Sure the food looks atractive, but who cares when they're not worth eating. Waited 15 minutes to get water and menus until we waived down a waiter. Can't get as bad as this. Don't bother, so many other great places to dine.

I just had a leisurely and most pleasurable dinner the other night at Globe Bistro. First off, the food was delicious! I had the chicken which was tender and very flavourful. Also, I loved the 7 deadly sin martini selection - "Lust" was wonderful! It was difficult to choose a dessert as they all sounded amazing but I settled on the apple gingerbread trifle, which was melt in your mouth. Our waiter was fantastic and I look forward to dining there again soon.

It's about time there was something new on the Danforth. I've been twice to Globe. The first time, they didn't have their liqour license, but were eager to showcase their local menu. I love the idea of using a local farm's meat and produce and that the waiter told us all about it. Prices a bit high, yes, but the ingredients are fresh and organic. I had oysters the other night that melted on my tongue and sent me into a stupour! The martinis are awesome too! If you're looking for a huge, inexpensive meal, don't go. If you're looking for a night of great food, atmoshpere and a HUGE choice of drinks (champagne by the glass- hello!) then Globe is for you.

I went to Globe Bistro on the Danforth last night. It was my third visit but the fist time since the restaurant got their liquor license. And the third time was the charm. I started my meal with a couple glasses of a wonderful Spanish sparkling wine (I can't remember the name but it was only $6 a glass and very tasty). Then my friends and I ordered a selection of small plate dishes from the tapas menu -- the smelts, the empanada, oysters, and the scallop/chirizo dish. I liked all of these offerings but the empanada really worked for me. The pastry and dungeness crab melted in my mouth and I loved its spicy finish. For my main I had the gnocchi --one of my favourite things to eat. I'm a bit picky about my gnocchi but this was the best I've had since I ate at Lupa in New York. Each piece was light, tender and succulent. I ended my meal with the small cheese plate, where I found three of the best cheeses I've ever had (again can't remember their names but I'm going to call the restaurant today). To add to this more than satisfactory meal, Jordan our waiter was efficient, knowledgeable about the food and highly entertaining. If I had any critical feedback about this stellar restaurant, I would say that it's a bit pricey and the portions are smaller than I like. Though I heard that the chef buys organic when ever he can so I'm sure that adds to the cost of the food. Without a doubt, I will go back. In fact, I think we're going for New Year's Eve -- I heard something about a Champagne tasting menu. Sounds interesting!

I have just come in after having one of the worst meals for a long time. It would take a lot of convincing for me and my friends to dine at globe bistro again.

We ordered the black pepper riccoto gnoicci ($12). Instead of a silky, savoury soft pillow, I get watery overcooked pasta. So what if it's served prettily in an plate? It's so heavy and runny I can't believe it has ever crossed paths with an egg. It is a jiggly boarding-school nightmare, with a handful of wild mushrooms adding insult to injury.

butter poached lobster ($38) is another disappointment from the master's kitchen, salty pasta tainted by nasty fennel. Less than fresh fish is also the undoing of an $24 georgian bay pickerel.

I appreciate the effort it takes to smoke potatoes but better to direct it towards more complex spicing, not this generic tastelessness.

My advice: there are plenty of litterbins in town, which could serve up better grub!

The wait staff was rude and almost “cocky” to a point when asked a question. ""Tasteless cuisine and interesting design". Small portions and high prices. Bad recommendation!!! "The worst place on the danforth to be overcharged for second rate food in a third rate atmosphere."

Pathetic, tasteless meal that was grossly overpriced. To make matters worse, it has the worst parking lot we have ever encountered. Service is just barely average, with little if no interest in the customer.

"hurry-up and wait" pacing, and receiving a chipped glass on my second serving of wine. It is a fairly sizeable chip and I easily could have cut myself on it if I hadn't been observant.

This lack of care extends into the kitchen. The food was not served as described on the menu and was of poor quality. My companion's tapas crab cake, is a disaster on a couple of fronts. Not only was the crab empanada dry and hard like a stone, the accompanying ingredinets leaves an odd taste in one's mouth. The tempura tasted like it was fried with Chinese shrimp crackers. It was also over fried. and scallop which was drowned in vinegar. spices are overmixed to a point where any chance at subtly is totally lost.

on to the mains, the 12 0z rib eye steak ($34). It is woefully overcooked, resembling scorched leather, and subsequentally lacks any real flavor.

My dining companion has the oven roasted la fermme chicken, served with blue potatoes and cippoline onions. Again, it isn't terrible, just bland. It is similar to a TV dinner in flavor and execution. The sauce tastes either frozen or from a can, while the mushrooms are overcooked and passable.

when I tried to speak to the owner he refused to come out of the kitchen or wherever he was hiding. very pedestrian food, Had to take the bill to the hostess stand since the waiter was no where to be found. terrible place.

We had dinner at Globe Bistro on Sunday 26 Nov. The food and service were very good and we will return again soon.
I am glad that a restaurant like this has finally arrived within walking distance of my home.

To Amy: I find it hard to beive that your review (I mean rant) was for the Globe Bistro, they didn't even have a licence to serve wine as of Sunday, they are expecting it this week.

Amy, I'm not sure you were at Globe Bistro on the Danforth. First thing, they don't have their liquor license yet. And the second thing, the food, service and atmosphere is fantastic! I'm going tonight -- my second time -- and I can't wait to eat the chef's full menu. I love the place even without booze -- that's saying something.

I have eaten in places all over the world from upper class restuants in London to street stalls in asia. The atmosphere is really nice. overpriced menu for mediocre food with incompetent/underskilled waiters. poor management both in the kitchen and on the floor. We heard the chef/owner begin to yell at some one in the kitchen, quite abusively and drunkenly. He was calling him a f*ing piece of sh*t and telling him he could get the f*** out, etc. It was pretty bad.So that was the evening. Pans were crashing around and every once in a while our waiter would come out, wild eyed, to ask if we needed anything. The abuse continued. The service was mediocre. The food was subpar: the lobster was overdone and flaky, the sauce was a tastless mass that was unedible, and the swiss char was completely wilted and disgusting. Not to mention that the bar manager/wine steward was inept and did not help us in the least when we told him the wine was not tasting right...he didn't even try it himself and get this he told us that it was supposed to taste bitter!!!ever go there. Never never never.

My wife and I noticed that the old Cafe Brussels was under renovation, and were interested in seeing what would move into the space. Then, while passing by the other evening on a quest for someplace new to eat, we noticed that it had just opened. Overcoming a bout of shyness due to feelings of being underdressed for the clearly very fashionable Globe Bistro, we entered in.

What followed was one of the most delightful meals we've had in some time. While they did not have their full menu yet, the prix fixe tasting menu offer a delightful combination of tastes, pleasingly arranged, and beyond delicious. Add pleasant service and and a very nice atmospshere, and the meal was a memorable one.

So best wishes to the owners and staff of the Globe Bistro. We will certainly be returning!
