You've got to hand it to Jamie Kennedy; when he finds a successful formula, he sticks to it. Perhaps the most ubiquitous chef/restaurateur in Toronto, Kennedy is also the most restless. There have been a few erroneous reports that the eponymous Jamie Kennedy at the Gardiner restaurant was to close its doors for good, but rumours of its demise have been greatly… well, you know. Rather than close the doors to the Gardiner Café, Kennedy continues his successful with-the-times trajectory with casual, local fare.
But Kennedy is not pussy-footing around the fact that the change in the function of his Gardiner space is indeed due to the recession. Kennedy knows sticking to the Kennedy Kitchens' ideology - supporting the community by buying and cooking only local meats and produce – is inherently an expensive habit. But, it is a habit that Kennedy will not kick. The Gardiner Café, serving only local and artisanal products, follows the Chef's dogma, but also cuts costs for the consumer by proffering up items that are more café-oriented; that would be simple (albeit, gourmet style. This is JK, after all) sandwiches, salads, soups, etc.
Eventually, Kennedy believes, more businesses will shift gears toward local products and inevitably the items will have greater distribution and become more cost effective. But, as Jamie says himself, "food is never going to be cheap."
For those who still want the Jamie Kennedy, fine dining experience; worry not, the airy, light filled, contemporary spot hosts 3-course, prix fixe lunches every Friday at 12:00pm in the private dining area and, for a little bonus, the chef himself is present. For $25 the weekly lunch series will include items like steamed asparagus with kozlick mustard sabayon; pistou with white bean and arugula; braised dingo farms beef with broad noodles and pickled wild leek herb; whitefish sauté with radish and onion salad and chervil beurre blanc; rhubarb crisp; or butter tarts.
In addition to the Friday prix fixe lunches, the café plans to make use of its terrace. Throughout the summer, the Toronto restaurant plays host to Scotland with its cocktails on the terrace series. The weekly event features Balvenie single malt whiskeys paired with Chef Kennedy's complimentary creations. For those who are not interested in the manly, smokey flavours of the single malt, full bar service is available, as well as an ever-changing roster of small bites.

14 Reader Reviews | Arriving at 1:45 on Saturday December 5th my friend and I were ignored for 10 minutes at the door and then told there was no food, when I asked why we were not being seated. When I asked if this was a restaurant I was told it was a cafeteria. There are very few items on the menu I saw, nothing like the published menu, only fries , a ploughmans lunch , soup and devilled eggs. The beautiful room has been cut off by a screen. We would never go back

Everything about this restaurant is great: drinks, service, food, ambiance. The location is odd, but that's the only negative.

Definitely good food, definitely over priced and over rated. The food is good, not great. And the attitude is far too snooty for what they are; "a cafe".

OMG this place is uber nice and staff are (believe it or not) actually friendly (They weren't before). My friends and I checked out the awesome lunch menu and wine list after our Crunch workout. They have awesome brunch food and a dessert platter that isn't too sweet.

So, how is the Gardiner Cafe now anyway? All I hear is this "Jamie's Problem" thing. But how is the food here now? I was good before...

Restaurateur Jamie Kennedy has plenty of ideas about what his Gardiner Cafe, should be. But this reincarnation looks to have staying power. Light fare. Easy prices. The dining room crew need to lose the attitude, though. It's no longer fine dining.

The Globe itself is faring worse then any restaurant in town. ComScore shows the paper is suffering a dramatic dip. Advertisers are down in frenzied numbers. But, hey, let's get as cocky as we can while we still have jobs. (Yes, I am a Globe employee, but not editorial. Forgive me, for I have sinned).

Kind of a back-stabbing article in The Globe this week. A bit odd, as though it was a scathing report, but there was no real complaint. Jamie Kennedy churns out a quality product, and we are all hurting in these times... not just JK restaurants. The newspaper industry, ahem, is in bigger trouble than the restaurant industry.

This place is in general a little expensive, but the new lunch menu brings the prices down to a reasonable level. The tarts are the best that I've ever had. I was very surprised.

The "Working Lunch with Jamie Kennedy" series will be running on WEDNESDAYS, not Fridays.

Uhmmm, Michele, is your comment for Gardiner Cafe...? or North 44? Hard to see why you're posting here.

North 44, hyped to the max due to a well known Chef. I was not impressed! We went during winterlicious, as that is the only time anyone could ever afford Mark McKeowan's prices. We wanted the rabbit but they had run out! so we had short ribs. I must say they were very good. The dessert was okay. Service, okay. They seemed to be just trying to do a mass feeding, to get people in and out as quickly as possible.
Not worth the hype.

It is lightened up a bit. I recognize the old staff. But, honestly, the fare is quite cheap (compared to before). And the service has lightened up a tad.

I was never a fan of the old Gardiner Cafe. A bit more snooty than it deserved to be. I hope this "new and improved" version rectified this.
