hough the name of this resto roughly translates into Canteen, it is far from the dingy WW2 era mess halls that catered solely to the soldiers. Instead, this wonderful College Street secret is a haven for fine French cuisine, complete with a sumptuous summer patio hidden out back. Foie Gras, Escargots with Frog’s Legs, and Scallops on the half shell arrive in a beautiful presentation before your eyes, allowing you to forget the unique ingredients and focus on flavour instead. Surprisingly, some of the more adventurous dishes are priced substantially lower than the staples that we’ve all come to know and love from the domain of French cuisine. That being said, an excellent steak is always worth the money, and Gamelle prepares a magnificent cut of beef to succulent perfection. Bon appétit! - E.J.

Not a bad little spot, very French. Pricey and slow to make the sandwich, but worth the wait.. def great.

Unbelievable story - my fiancee and I like Gamelle and decided it was time to go again. I called to make reservations and was speaking to 'someone' from the restaurant who couldn't hear me on the phone (I was in a quiet office, he in a loud restaurant in the afternoon). After spelling my last name to him three times, I told him "close enough"...he says "no, I need it right for my database". I said "I'm not sure what else I can do, I've spelled it for you three times", and he hangs up on me! I called back 3x, he hangs up 3x! I went down in person to complain - turns it it was owner Jean-Pierre who hung up on me, claiming I was rude to him(?!?). I said 'this isn't Paris', i.e. you can't treat a customer like sh*t and expect them to come anyway. He's just lost a customer for good, and he says "good!" This is beyond shocking to me; needless to say, we're never going there again.
